The debut album by singer-songwriter Patty Griffin is a low-key, largely acoustic set with simple, unobtrusive arrangements supporting her lyrics and melodies. Allegedly the demo tape that got the Maine native signed to A&M Records, and slightly remixed by producer Nile Rodgers, LIVING WITH GHOSTS has a live-in-the-studio feel that keeps the listener from mentally pigeonholing Griffin's smart, introspective tunes. These 10 songs share common ground with Nashville country, the then-emergent Lilith Fair scene, and rockier women like Aimee Mann and Liz Phair. That Griffin's songs have been covered by everyone from Emmylou Harris to Jessica Simpson is proof of how wide her talent spreads. Particular highlights here include "Let Him Fly," "Every Little Bit," and "Not Alone."

I recently heard Patty Griffin for the first time. Her music crosses lines of folk and new country. This particular release was her demo tape. It's hard to rate which one of hers is the best. This one is a solid 5 and will please all those that listen.

5 stars Patty grabs a hold of you and doesn't let go!
If I was stranded on an island and could pick a handful of CDs to listen to the rest of my life (or as long as the batteries lasted!), Patty Griffin's "Living With Ghosts" would be on that short list. What a voice! What a lyricist! What pain and pleasure in every note! If she doesn't touch you, you must be numb.
