Nipping at the heels of wiz-kid blues guitarist Kenny Wayne Shepherd, who debuted at age 18, comes 16-year-old Jonny Lang, the most soulful guitar slinger ever to make it out of junior high school. Lang's debut, much like Shepherd's LEDBETTER ... Full DescriptionHEIGHTS, features a mix of choice covers and co-written originals. But whereas HEIGHTS leans in a Delta-blues direction, Lang's blues has more of an R&B flavor.
The Clavinet and Hammond B-3 organ on the title track and "Hit The Ground Running" help give LIE TO ME a funky swagger. As for influences, Lang's choices of Ike Turner's "Matchbox" and Syl Johnson's "Back For A Taste Of Your Love" show a taste for rousing shuffles and Memphis soul. Lang shows his commercial instincts by wrapping up the album with "When I Come To You" and the acoustic "Missing Your Love," two songs that wouldn't sound out of place on a recent Eric Clapton album.
Recorded at Oar Fin Studios, Minneapolis, Minnesota and House Of Blues, Memphis, Tennessee.

Entertainment Weekly (1/31/97, p.58) - "The ripe, vibrant voice of contemporary blues singer and guitarist Lang is so compelling, it would be an exceptional major-label debut even if he weren't only 16..." - Rating: B+ Hide Description Lie To Me Music | List Price | $13.95 (You save $2.06) | | Category | Rock Albums, Blues CDs, Rock/Pop, Contemporary Blues, Enhanced CD | | Label | A & M | | Orig Year | 1997 | | All Time Sales Rank | 318 | | CD Universe Part number | 1094310 | | Catalog number | 540640 | | Discs | 1 | | Release Date | Jan 28, 1997 | | Studio/Live | Studio | | Mono/Stereo | Stereo | | Producer | David Z | | Engineer | David Z; Tom Tucker | | Personnel | Ricky Peterson David Smith - bass David Z - background vocals Steve Potts - drums, percussion Jonny Lang - vocals, acoustic & electric guitar, electric sitar Bruce McCabe - piano, Fender Rhodes, Wurlitzer piano, Clavinet, keyboards, background vocals Jack Holder - guitar, Hammond B-3 organ Tony Black - Hammond B-3 organ Kevin Bowe - guitar Art Edmaiston - saxophone, horns

Lie To Me album
$11.89 WANDER THIS WORLD is an Enhanced CD, which contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files.
WANDER THIS WORLD was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Blues Album.
When a wave of blues-playing wunderkids (Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Monster Mike Welch) arrived on the scene in the '90s, 16-year-old Jonny Lang was out alongside them with his debut LIE TO ME. On his follow-up, WANDER THIS WORLD, Lang once again teams up with ex-Prince mate David Z for yet another excellent collection of R&B-tinged blues.
Not yet old enough to drink, Lang has a voice that rings with the tone of an old soul, particularly on the late Luther Allison's "Cherry Red Wine," the album's only cover. Although this teen shreds impressively on songs such as the scorching "Still Rainin'," he shows an affinity for Memphis soul on "Second Guessing" and "Walking Away" and clavinet-driven funk on both "Before You Hit The Ground" and "I Am." When he's not channeling Otis Redding's spirit or rooting around in Prince's musical neighborhood, Lang's impressive range allows him to update the blues without making it sound readymade for a beer commercial. This results in an ominous title track whose main character's restless ...

Lie To Me CD music
$9.69 The Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band: Kenny Wayne Shepherd (vocals, guitar); Corey Sterling (vocals); Joe Nadeau (guitar); Jimmy Wallace (keyboards, percussion); Will Ainsworth (bass); Kevin Smith (drums).
Since Stevie Ray Vaughan's untimely death in 1990, there has been a fear that the future of popular blues died with him. Kenny Wayne Shepherd's debut does much to dispel these concerns. Hugely influenced by the late Texan, this 18 year-old prodigy first picked up the guitar after watching an SRV show from atop one of Vaughan's amps when he was eight. Shepherd's decade-long woodshedding pays off on an album that incorporates versatility and passion missing in musicians twice his age.
The Shreveport native moves naturally from traditional country blues, combining steel guitar and a biting slide ("Aberdeen"), to slow Buddy Guy-styled emotiveness ...

"Trouble Is..." was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance.
After releasing a debut that drew raves from people such as James Brown and B.B. King, Kenny Wayne Shepherd followed it up with an album that demonstrates how much musical growth this childhood prodigy has experienced in two years. On TROUBLE IS..., Shepherd's playing still reflects the huge influence of the late Stevie Ray Vaughan (particularly on the instrumental title track that finds him joined by Double Trouble and Reese Winans), but new singer Noah Hurt also colors everything with a growl reminiscent of Paul Rodgers.
Moving slightly away from the country-blues of LEDBETTER HEIGHTS, Shepherd's strong rhythmic touch shines on everything from juke-joint exercises ("[Long] Gone" with James Cotton) to the transformation of Dylan's "Everything's Broken" into a roadhouse rave-up. Although this Shreveport native's guitar lends itself to more up-tempo material (check out "Chase The Rainbow"), ...

Great Begining! Lang's first album is nothing more than spectacular. Listening to this has made me more attentive to blues. By playing classic songs, combing his style, vocals, and smooth guitar makes this so enjoyable. This is an album you can listen to time and again! A+ Submitted by a reviewer (Hayward, CA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Revelation of 1999 One of the best records ever! Clean, pure, rough and yet consise and professional. Unbelievable these songs can be song by a kid from his age. Alle kinds of other artist fragments sound thru in his songs. Some bluesy (Robert Cray, Keb Mo), some rock (Springsteen, Clapton). If you'd need to describe Jonny's music in two words they would be "intense" and "genuine". This is "real" music. It is yet polished enough to appeal to a broad audience. Given enough airplay "Lie to me" is a potential #1 hit single. Submitted by flach (Utrecht, Holland) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
