Hiatt was already a seasoned performer and songwriter by the time this album was released. He was "the songwriter's songwriter" and destined for critically acclaimed cult status. This is just one of a series of excellent collections of songs that have been recorded by dozens of artists from Bonnie Raitt to Joe Cocker. The simple piano accompanying the gravel-voiced "Have A Little Faith In Me" makes the hairs stand up on end. Hiatt's fine supporting musicians are Jim Keltner (drums), Ry Cooder (guitar) and Nick Lowe (bass). This unsung genius is the Randy Newman of roots-rock.

All songs written by John Hiatt.

Recorded at Ocean Way Studio 2, Los Angeles, California, February 17-20, 1987.

Composer: John Hiatt.

Personnel: John Hiatt (vocals, guitar, acoustic guitar, piano); Ry Cooder (electric guitar, sitar); Nick Lowe (electric bass); Jim Keltner (drums).

Rolling Stone - Number 53 "100 Best Albums Of The 80's" survey November 1989.
Uncut (p.96) - "[T]he main preoccupations of BRING THE FAMILY were loss, breakdown and despair, followed by tentative resurrection and renewed hope....Hiatt was exposing his inner core."

4 stars Interesting recording
Hyatt and friends, in particular Ry Cooder, produce some very intersting tracks. I enjoyed it the more I listened to it. Cooder as usual is a standout.

5 stars One of the best albums of the 80s
John Hiatt had a long list of serious personal problems in the early 80s. He conquered them all, found wedded bliss, and put it all down in song. The results were a "triology" of autobiographical albums (the other two being "Slow Turning" and "Stolen Moments"), starting with "Bring the Family," that stand as some of the greatest music recorded during the 80s. Although his songwriting has been universally regarded as great (based on the wide variety of people who've recorded his songs -- the original version of "Thing Called Love" is on this album), Hiatt shows off the range of his quirky yet enjoyable voice (listen, for instance, to his soulful rendition on "Have a Little Faith in Me"). This is a classic album, not only in John Hiatt's career, but in all of rock and roll.
