Extreme's self-titled 1989 debut made the Boston quartet quite a "buzz band" in the hard rock underground, but it wasn't until their sophomore release one year later, PORNOGRAFFITI, that the band scored their breakthrough hit. In the spring of '91, the lovely acoustic ballad "More than Words" was released as a single, and instantly became a smash hit (nearly a year after PORNOGRAFFITI was first released). And while they scored another hit with the similarly styled "Hole Hearted," Extreme's new pop fans must have been surprised when they heard the rest of the album, which was comprised mostly of hard rock/heavy metal tunes.
The album was also the band's first stab at writing a concept album--it dealt with the media's subtle yet constant use of sex in advertising and it's effect on the public. If you're in the mood for rock with a progressive edge and loaded with six-string wizardry (courtesy of Nuno Bettencourt), just check out "Decadence Dance," "When I'm President," "Get the Funk Out," It('s A Monster)," "He Man Woman Hater," and the title track.

highly underrated band Extreme was one of those bands who, for the most part, rocked and rocked well. Like some other groups (Mr. Big, Night Ranger), they had a huge smash hit ballad and that's the way most people thought of them. Pornograffitti is a pretty good cd filled with a mix of styles, mostly hard rock with lots of great vocals and a touch of funk. WHEN I FIRST KISSED YOU is a nice song but out of place (although it certainly demonstrates they were multi-faceted). I think their self-titled debut was just as good, if not better. Their best album, in my opinion, was "III SIDES TO EVERY STORY," (which, sadly, I don't even see as available on this site). If you get a chance to check it out, I highly recommend you do. With their 1984 release, the pleasantly titled BALLS TO THE WALL, German metallists Accept set their sights on the last frontier the band had yet to conquer--America. Like their contemporaries the Scorpions, who also specialized in hard rock and hailed from Germany, Accept started out as a straight up heavy metal band, but as the '80s wore on, softened their high volume sound with a dose of melody.
While BALLS TO THE WALL introduced Accept to whole new legion of fans stateside, it wasn't the huge US smash they'd hoped for. Still, BALLS ...

Often utilizing group harmony against ...
