I've had the Chess CD set for years...my kids 'borrowed the 2nd CD of the 1st set so I had to get a replacement. To me the Songs can get intoxicating and the Story interesting (even for Chess).

 One of the Best Musicals
This musical has had a very speckled history (that discussion would take a few pages to muddle through), but there is no doubt that the music is some of the best there is. The music is diverse, deep and absolutely intoxicating at times. If you love musicals, please listen .. you will not be disappointed.

Unexpectedly Excellent
I wore out the two-cassette version twice, and IMMEDIATELY sent a copy to my mother, who fell in love with it as well, the first time it was released. I had been somewhat skeptical at first when the story broke initially...a new musical about the Cold War from Tim Rice and the ABBA guys? GOOOOOOOD LUCK! Then I heard "One Night In Bangkok," and decided to take a gamble. For those who think that "Bangkok" is the best song in the show...prepare to be surprised. Nobody thought MAMMA MIA: THE MUSICAL would fly, either.
Though the material may be pretty dated now, I think this piece is good enough to merit an update AND a revival. How about it, Broadway?

This is an excellent souvenir recording of the ‘Broadway’ version of CHESS. It has some gorgeous singing from Judy Kuhn, Philip Casnoff, Marcia Mitzman, and the late David Carroll, plus a beautiful new song “Someone else’s story†and a wonderful trio version of “You and Iâ€. In my opinion the concept album, which was the first version, and the new concert version with Idina Menzel are the very best most complete versions. But for those of us who are big CHESS and/or ABBA fans, this recording is a must.
