Few pop song catalogs have been as underappreciated as that of the Carpenters. Though many of their best songs ("Rainy Days and Mondays," "We've Only Just Begun") were penned by equally underrated songwriter Paul Williams, pianist Richard Carpenter got his compositional licks in too, and it was his vocalist/drummer sister Karen whose sweet but unaffected vocal style cemented these tunes' popularity and helped place them in the '70s pop canon for all time.
This collection, though essentially a functional "best of," focuses, as the title makes plain, on LOVE SONGS. Of course, it doesn't hurt that such tunes happened to be the duo's stock in trade. From the achingly evanescent "Close To You" to the uplifting, jubilant "Top Of The World," these songs celebrates the ups and downs of romance. Lend an ear and be reminded of the grace and beauty that existed in the musical world of Richard and Karen Carpenter.

A decent if somewhat candy-coated effort in the pop-psychedelic vein, combining cheerful sunshine pop sensibilities with some hard-edged psychedelic playing. It all falls somewhere between the Beatles' Revolver album and the Zombies' Odessey & Oracle (the latter especially on "Man Do You" and "Raven"), with some Sgt. Pepper-type layered choruses and overdubbed strings and other instruments. The question is how well it represents the sound of the Paper Garden -- and that begs the larger question behind the purpose of recording an LP; The Paper Garden dates from a period when the answer to that question was starting to change. According to the account of singer/guitarist Joe Arduino, the New York City-based quintet had a solid stage repertory established from performances at colleges in the Northeastern United States in 1967 and 1968, when they got the chance to cut this album under the auspices of British producer Geoff Turner, who was working at Musicor in New York at the time -- presented with that opportunity, the members ended up writing a whole new body of songs for the occasion; thus, the album become a new, self-contained artistic statement rather than a representation of the music by which they'd first attracted attention ...

As part of Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine, Jim Bob gained fame for his punk/glam rabble-rousers that were half U.K.-specific puns, half savage portraits of a rotting nation. On his own, Jim Bob carved out a calmer but still sharp route on various solo and collaborative releases, given an overview on this often enjoyable release. Those familiar with his hectoring Carter USM days would be most surprised by his gentler singing here, far more easygoing and conventionally tuneful but sometimes tinged with the bite of old. That bite still resides in his subject matter and approach, though -- if songs like "Candy Floss" and the great "The Mufty Day Riots" are, at least sonically, cheap and cheery variations of the bigger Carter USM stompers, it's more a matter of degree, while the sense of rain-drenched seaside resorts and broken-down clubs on songs like "A Bad Day" comes through in the romantic but melancholy performances, often keyboard-led. Meanwhile, his gimlet-eyed but always emotive portrait of Britain's frustrated and screwed-over populace continues song for song, whether talking about being only the victim of a "so-so crime" or simply the frustrations of petty authority and small-mindedness in general. ~ Ned Raggett
