Originally released on Deram (1035). Includes liner notes by John Reed.
Where this album's predecessor IN SEARCH OF THE LOST CHORD dipped deeply into Eastern-flavored psychedelia, THRESHOLD is more of a straightforward rock record. Things open up experimentally enough, with a spoken-word vignette over electronic drones, but this leads straight into one of the Moodies' poppiest, most up-tempo songs, "Lovely to see You," which would remain a concert favorite for decades. Even notoriously theatrical flautist/vocalist Ray Thomas keeps his eccentricities in check on his effective ballad "Dear Diary."
Keyboardist Mike Pinder takes a surprisingly lascivious vocal turn on the anomalous, leering rocker "So Deep Within You." Justin Hayward provides the lion's share of ear-tickling moments with pretty folk-rock tunes such as "Never Comes the Day" and "Are you Sitting Comfortably," while the most adventurous piece "Have you Heard/The Voyage" extends over three discrete tracks, featuring complex instrumental passages and lush harmonies. THRESHOLD doesn't come off as an attempt to cater to the mainstream, it's just a more song-based, less exotic recording than its predecessors.
Digitally remastered - 13 tracks include 'In the Beginning', 'Lovely to See You', 'Dear Diary', 'Lazy Day' and more.
Digitally remastered by Steve Fallone (PolyGram Studios).

Uncut (p.120) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[The album deserves] a prominent place in the pantheon of British prog/pscyh classics." Mojo (Publisher) (9/00, p.121) - "...They Gregorian chanted as well as the Yardbirds, they structured their song cycles wonderfully, they made better use of the Mellotron than anyone, and nobody sang daft lyrics more beautifully..." | On The Threshold Of A Dream Music Review Average Rating: (4.5 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews exquisite This album is probably the Moodies all time best in my opinion. Every track is top-notch. The album's overall feeling is that of mellow, well-being. Justin's voice is melodious (as always) on "Never Comes the Day". "Send Me No Wine" has a fun, uplifting beat. Some people say "So Deep Within You" doesn't fit the Moodies and that it's all braggadocio but i disagree. If you really listen to those words, they're sweet and poetic. It's a far cry from most of the lyrics that are out there today. I think it's a real turn-on. It's hard to pick a fave, but if i had to, "Never" would win then maybe "Lazy Day" because it's just so true to life (if you're lucky). Moody Blues Delight. This was a wonderful little trip back into my bachelorhood, when the original version was played frequently in my household of single men. Extremely happy to find it available on the new CD version! Submitted by FX.Kleshinski (Jeannette, PA USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
The power of the studio This album of the Moody Blues stated everything that they were about: a group that used the studo to make music that would be considered a "classical" take on rock music, without obviously copying either of them. And on this album, it feels just like a symphonic work of art, with rock'n'roll instrumentation. One of the greatest things about this album is that the production, while top-notch, was overblown, giving the songs a pompously bombast feeling that the group is deliberately going over the edge to push this album to the farthest it can possibly go. The result is absolutely amazing, and it makes it hard for some people to listen to the record because it doesn't pull any stops for anyone. Either you get it or you don't. This doesn't affect the quality of the music a whit. In fact, it gives it character and form. Sure, the production is an all-or-nothing effort, but it works. It just works, and for those who like it, they will never forget it. Submitted by Galen (Anchorage, Alaska) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$11.94 It's no secret that Sting is a serious man, so it's only logical that his holiday album -- his first new music since the Police reunion, not that it really matters -- is a serious endeavor, thank you. No niceties for him, no comforts of carols; he favors formal over familiar, writing madrigals, not ditties. It is music made by someone who lives in a castle, which ...
