Although this incredible live unit never recorded a proper studio album we do have this as a reminder of just what is possible. Joni the folkie briefly became Ms. Mitchell the jazz singer, supported by the formidable talents of Pat Metheny, Lyle Mays, Jaco Pastorius, Michael Brecker and Don Alias. Many of Mitchell's jazz flirtations are given the full treatment with musicians who understood both her and the genre. It is a staggering marriage of talents and wholly successful. There are even obligatory bonus solos from Pat and Don. They should have stayed together for at least another album.
Recorded at the Santa Barbara County Bowl, Santa Barbara, California in September 1979.
Personnel: Joni Mitchell (vocals, electric guitar); Pat Metheny (guitar); Michael Brecker (tenor saxophone); Lyle Mays (keyboards); Jaco Pastorius (fretless bass); Don Alias (drums); The Persuasions (background vocals).
Producers: Joni Mitchell, Henry Lewy, Skip Cottrel.
Joni Mitchell Shadows And Light Songs Shadows And Light Music Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) Joni, Jaco and Pat fans must have. I had this LP and enjoyed it at high volume. I do not consider myself a Joni Mitchell fan but this album has a great mix of rock, jazz, folk and pop. Add to that the energy of a live performance and you have great music.
I played my LP and knew I had to find this on CD. The engineering is very good and the sound clear. I did notice some live recording issues that the clarity of the CD shows up that was masked on the LP.
What a band: Jaco Pastorius, Pat Metheny, Lyle Mays, and Michael Brecker.
If you have ever liked any of these, then give this album a try.
I love jazz and listened to Joni first went she was experimenting with jazz and Mingus' music. So I also have have Mingus and Court & Spark.

Excellent live Joni! I have had the vinyl version of this recording for years and it has always been one of my favorite Joni albums. It draws heavily from her "jazz era" recordings with possibly the best band with which she ever toured. I held off on purchasing the cd due to the abreviated version that first appeared (tracks were omitted to keep it to one disc). When I saw that the complete lp was now available on cd I had to have it. The bargain price was an exceptional bonus as well (under $13 for a 2-disc set). If you enjoy Joni and her jazz-influenced music, this is a must have for you. Submitted by a reviewer (Desert Southwest) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Joni's Best Live I admit it. I am a fan. I have all of Joni Mitchell's recorded output up until about 1981. But after about 1980, Miss Mitchell ran out of relevant subjects to sing about (to me, that is). That notwithstanding, her output previous to 1980 is extraordinary. Both "Miles of Aisles" and "Shadows and Light" are musts for even any "semi-serious" fan. I was at the live shows back then, and these albums capture the essence and excitement as much as possible. Jaco (Patorius, may he rest in peace), Pat and Lyle (Metheny and Mays, may they live long and prosper) musically add to the mix. The sound quality is very good. I recommend both "Shadows and Light" and "Miles of Aisles". Submitted by Jeff_Cantor_99 (Brooklyn, NY, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$19.98 When Jon Anderson rejoined Yes after DRAMA, he was inserting himself into an unusual situation. Keyboardist Geoff Downes and longtime guitarist Steve Howe had left to form Asia with prog rock vets John Wetton (King Crimson, Roxy Music etc.) and Carl Palmer (ELP). Chris Squire and Alan White brought original Yes keysman Tony Kaye back and recruited vibrant young Australian guitarist/vocalist/composer Trevor Rabin. The quartet had already begun writing and recording, but Anderson was able to insert himself into the proceedings with such ease that the new combination sounds completely natural on 90125.
Mostly, the band was concerned with trimming the musical fat to keep pace with the onslaught of the 1980s. Thus, tracks like "Owner ...
| | Michael Buble Crazy Love CD (2009)
Shadows And Light
$15.05 Buoyed by the popularity of the hit contemporary pop ballad "Home," singer Michael Bublé's 2005 album, IT'S TIME, clearly positioned the vocalist as the preeminent neo-crooner of his generation. Easily the singer's most stylistically wide-ranging album so far, 2009's CRAZY LOVE is also one of his brightest, poppiest, and most fun. Bublé kicks things off with the theatrical, epic ballad "Cry Me a River" and proceeds to milk the tune with burnished breath, eking out the drama line by line. It's over the top for sure, but Bublé takes you to the edge of the cliff, prepares to jump, and then gives you a knowing wink that says, not quite yet -- there's more fun to be had. And what fun it is with Bublé swinging through "All of Me," and killin' Van Morrison's classic "Crazy Love" with a light and yearning touch. And just as "Home" worked to showcase Bublé's own writing abilities, here we get the sunshine pop of "Haven't Met You Yet" -- a skippy, jaunty little song that brings to mind a mix of the Carpenters and Chicago. Throw in a rollicking and soulful duet with Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings on "Baby (You've Got What It Takes)," and a fabulously old-school close-harmony version of "Stardust" with Bublé backed by the vocal ensemble Naturally 7, and CRAZY LOVE really ...

| | Atlas Sound Logos CD (2009)
Shadows And Light
$11.64 Bradford Cox was a virtual song machine during the time between Deerhunter's CRYPTOGRAMS and the Atlas Sound's LOGOS, churning out officially released material as well as plenty of songs only available on his blog. Over that span of time, he became a finer and more fluid songwriter, and his music emerged from the experimental fog of his earlier work just enough to give listeners tantalizing glimpses of almost ridiculously catchy songs. LOGOS keeps this push-pull between challenging and charming, yet Cox's second solo album still feels more experimental than Deerhunter, if only because he seems completely unfettered by any kind of rules or concerns about consistency. These songs barely sound like each other, yet they all sound like Cox. LOGOS comes into focus slowly with its first three songs. "The Light That Failed"'s hazy atmospheres slip effortlessly into "An Orchid"'s spectral recall of MICROCASTLE's psych-pop, but it's "Walkabout," Cox's irresistibly sunny collaboration with Animal Collective and Panda Bear's Noah Lennox, that announces that the album has truly arrived--it's as sudden, and satisfying, as tuning in a perfect pop song from radio static. From there, the album hops from sound to sound, ...
| | Pink Martini Splendor In The Grass CD (2009) Digipak
Shadows And Light
$13.14 Pink Martini follow the around-the-world-in-a-dozen-songs thrills of HEY EUGENE! with SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS, a mellower, simpler set of small pleasures. These are relative terms, however; the group's music is still well-traveled, with China Forbes singing in five languages (English, Spanish, Neapolitan, French, and Italian) instead of the six or so on EUGENE!. However, Pink Martini opt for a more unified sound here, one that draws on the more straightforward lounge-pop of their debut, SYMPATHIQUE, and the mellowness of '60s and '70s pop. SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS' first half is especially smooth, opening with the beautifully soft Neapolitan ballad "Ninna Nanna" and the title track, on which Forbes sings "I think we should take it slow" over swooping strings, brass, and piano that resurrect the glory days of AM pop; that feeling is echoed by the cover of Joe Raposo's "Sing," the Sesame Street song that gained popularity when the Carpenters performed it (Emilio Delgado, aka Sesame Street's Luis, duets with ...

$30.09 2009's VOICE OF SATURN is Zoroaster's second album and third release overall, and it continues to supplement the group's original sludge/doom foundation with surprising layers of eclecticism and experimentation. The Atlanta, GA-based trio still traffics primarily in genre trademarks like droning riffs, deliberate tempos, and crusty vocals (often intoning occult lyrics inspired by black metal originators such as Venom and ...
