Joni Mitchell draws freely on her heroes and influences, and in her turn inspires and informs the work of countless others; thus are the genes of our musical heritage passed on to new generations. The love of jazz glimpsed in COURT AND SPARK and THE HISSING OF SUMMER LAWNS is wanton in HEJIRA. The arrangements are loose and the melodies seductively free-flowing. The lyrics, too, have broken free of rigid verse and rhyme structures and tend towards prose poetry. The cloak of introspection that weighs down on much of her work is lighter here; though far from mainstream. The chiming flanged guitar throughout, is inspired.

Joni Mitchell Hejira Songs Hejira Music Review Average Rating: (4.9 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews BEYOND FIVE STARS. Joni gets a broken heart and drives off to find herself, and perhaps America. Letters home to Sharon, thoughts on others who just take off, all in asides the listener can eavesdrop on. The apex of the confessional songwriter form. It does not get any better, tho many of Jonis' other albums come close. Every sentient being should have this as a cornerstone of their collection. that high lonesome roadway sound Even though Joni Mitchell is both a icon and an iconoclast, this album has been overlooked and deserves a wider audience.
Minor chords and ennui abound. Beautifully sung, superlative material.
When everything falls apart and you toss off whatever harness that you bear, this is your soundtrack.
"Hejira" contains two of her all-time classics, "Coyote" and "Blue Motel Room".
I've found that albums with lyrics sometimes don't make good traveling companions. This is the exception. Submitted by jonbo_objetrose (Lord Hill, WA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.
My only female singer Joni is my only singer she knows how to play with great musicians and with my mentor Mr Pastorius I like this album

timeless This work is indeed a masterpiece, one of the finest albums ever made. It is still my favorite Joni Mitchell album, after hearing all of them over the last 25+ years, when I first heard Hejira. Joni Mitchell sees straight through you - it's haunting. If I could only have one CD, this would be it. Submitted by Rodney (Colorado) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
pure joy Never have I heard an album as perfect as this one. Every song is a journey of discovery, heart, beauty and creativity. Both lyrics and music do not follow any rules or logic, but rather flowing in a space so free and inspiring. This just might be the best album ever made. Hejira
$6.79 All tracks have been digitally remastered using HDCD technology.
Canadian songstress Joni Mitchell never really considered herself a folkie. While adding jazz textures to her literate lyrics in the mid-'70s may have confused her fans and infuriated jazz purists, to her it was as natural as rain. On DON JUAN'S RECKLESS DAUGHTER, she collaborated with the cream of the '70s jazz crop including Wayne Shorter, Don Alias, Airto, Larry Carlton and a young bassist by the name of Jaco Pastorius.
The sound on DON JUAN is lean, with a stripped-down band largely relying on bass and percussion to back up Mitchell's voice and acoustic guitar. Pastorius in particular proves himself an able and sensitive accompanist, flexing his considerable chops, but also laying low and letting his singular tone do all the work when necessary. Wayne Shorter's soprano sax blends perfectly with Mitchell, the stark, emotional sound complementing her frank vocal style. The percussion-only backing of "Dreamland" and the ...
| | Joni Mitchell Court And Spark CD (1974)
Hejira
$9.09 All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology.
COURT AND SPARK completed Joni Mitchell's transition from folk-singer to sophisticated rock auteur. In addition to her meticulously crafted melodies and evocative, image-rich lyrics, the songs here are breezy and immediately appealing. This is in part due to Tom Scott's L.A. Express, a sinuous jazz-based combo, but also to Mitchell's knack for pop hooks, which abound on COURT AND SPARK. The album's accessibility made it Mitchell's most commercially successful, yet the personal intensity and insight of her songwriting never wavers.
"Help Me" was a hit single, as was "Free Man in Paris," an expansive pop frolic that is reputedly a dig at industry mogul David Geffen. Mitchell returns to the terrain of piano balladry on "The Same Situation" and "Down to You"; yet even on these, as on the excellent social satire "People's Parties," one can hear the influence of jazz on her vocal phrasing and intonations. The rock-&-roll romp "Raised on Robbery" and the bluesy, comic swing of "Twisted" mix things up a bit, showing the artist's increasing ability to master and manipulate any form. COURT AND SPARK is one of Mitchell's finest albums, confirming her standing as one of the most important and subtle ...
| | Joni Mitchell Hissing Of Summer Lawns CD (1975)
Hejira
$9.35 A continuing move towards jazz was the most striking element of this record when first released. Larry Carlton and Robben Ford became two names to bandy around and appear cool. Indeed, their guitar playing throughout is superlative. The real strength, however, is the way in which Mitchell reached new plateaux with graceful ease. The remarkable "The ...
| | Joni Mitchell For The Roses CD (1972)
Hejira
$9.19 Between the stark, confessional singer-songwriter format of BLUE and the artful, streamlined jazz-pop of COURT AND SPARK, Joni Mitchell released this excellent transitional album. Located firmly between these stylistic poles, FOR THE ROSES looks to Mitchell's folky beginnings with wistful, piano-driven ballads like "Banquet" and the acoustic guitar lilt of the title track. At the same time cuts like "Cold Blue Steel and Straight Fire" push toward the unconventional melodies and rhythms--heavily influenced by jazz--that she would explore more fully on albums like HEJIRA.
"Electricity" and "Let the Wind Carry Me" blend singer-songwriter styles with jazzy flourishes (as on the saxophone accompaniment and swooping wordless vocals on the latter), while the record's hit single, "Turn Me On I'm a Radio" ...
| | Joni Mitchell Blue CD (1971)
Hejira
$9.15 All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology.
BLUE marks the culmination of Mitchell's early, traditional singer/songwriter period, and it is one of the very best albums of that genre. Though she was already beginning to experiment with elements of pop and jazz, BLUE focuses on Mitchell's skill as a folk singer, showcasing her reedy, expressive voice in duet with her piano or guitar. The arrangements on the album--which feature keys, dulcimer, bass, and assorted percussion--are spare and tasteful, so much so that it is easy to overlook their sophistication.
Yet it is ultimately Mitchell's songs that make BLUE such a moving and memorable experience. "All I Want" ...

$13.15 On his 2007 major-label debut, THE MAGIC POSITION, Irish singer-songwriter Patrick Wolf largely abandons his brooding Nick Cave-like demeanor (expertly displayed on '05's acclaimed WIND IN THE WIRES), opting instead to embrace the aesthetic of a brightly bedecked, life-loving dandy. What hasn't changed in this POSITION is Wolf's wildly ...
