Between the stark, confessional singer-songwriter format of BLUE and the artful, streamlined jazz-pop of COURT AND SPARK, Joni Mitchell released this excellent transitional album. Located firmly between these stylistic poles, FOR THE ROSES looks to Mitchell's folky beginnings with wistful, piano-driven ballads like "Banquet" and the acoustic guitar lilt of the title track. At the same time cuts like "Cold Blue Steel and Straight Fire" push toward the unconventional melodies and rhythms--heavily influenced by jazz--that she would explore more fully on albums like HEJIRA.
"Electricity" and "Let the Wind Carry Me" blend singer-songwriter styles with jazzy flourishes (as on the saxophone accompaniment and swooping wordless vocals on the latter), while the record's hit single, "Turn Me On I'm a Radio" is breezy, harmonica-driven pop. But while the styles diverge, Mitchell's lyrics are sharp as ever, exploring human relationships with a storyteller's eye for detail and a poet's feel for phrasing and image. The sense of painful, incisive honesty that comes across on BLUE is here as well, contributing to this exceptional, often overlooked gem in Mitchell's discography.

For The Roses CD music
$12.69 The "hope I die before I get old" philosophy is one which plagues every rock band lucky enough to have a lengthy career; so obviously, coming to grips with this dilemma becomes tougher the more extreme a band's sound. Therefore, in the black metal field -- commonly agreed to be the most extreme style of music on the planet -- the realization that it's often not better to burn out after all, but rather fade away a little further on down the line, can be an especially traumatic experience for both musicians and fans. Norway's Darkthrone clearly finds itself waist-deep in this quandary on its tenth album, 2003's Hate ...

For The Roses songs
$7.49 With a sound reminiscent of early 90s bay area punk rock, The Divide has reaffirmed not only a punk rock spirit that has been lost over the past 10 years, but also a social awareness that is sorely lacking in popular music. With few exceptions, punk rock ethos has been sacrificed in order to appease current trends of popular culture. Against this backdrop, The Divide was created. Blending influences like Operation Ivy, The Clash, Fifteen, Leftover Crack, and The Unseen, The Divide has created their own style of politically motivated punk rock. The result is a sound reminiscent of early 90s ska-punk, with enough leads and background vocals to keep anyone interested, from die-hard street punk fans to pop-punk aficionados. The Divide formed out of a shared desperation and disgust, not only for the current music scene, but also the current state of American politics and foreign policy. The summer of 2006 proved to be a profound turning point. The band originally started as a continuation of ...
