A pivotal '60s album. The Butterfield Blues Band's 1965 debut was a life-changing experience for a generation of young blues players; this follow-up, while not quite as epochal, can still be credited with influencing just about every underground band then percolating in San Francisco.
In fact, the album's title track is an epic 13-minute modal jam that is an obvious template for what the Airplane, the Dead, Quicksilver, and the rest would be doing a year later. The remainder of the album is more traditional, save for a radical deconstruction of Monkee Mike Nesmith's "Mary Mary" (if this was a bid for a hit single, they were kidding themselves), and there are sensational performances in abundance, including a deeply-felt rendering of the blues classic "Got a Mind to Give Up Livin'."
Includes liner notes by Paul Nelson.

| East-West Music Review Average Rating: (4.8 out of 5 stars) One of the best. Their second album and yet another classic.Paul B B B was one of the first band that included both black and white members and it was a real hit. One of the best cd´s from the 60´s. If you´re a fan of Michael Bloomfield and Elvin Bishop there is a lot of great guitar playing here. Paul B himself blows the harp as good as ever. Ultimate Cool Butterfield! Incredible Cover Photo You're on WOODOP -I agree with you. 'Work Song' is the real blast on this record featuring Butterfield, Bishop and Bloomfield at their most creative best. Also agree that 'got a mind to give up living' may the all time greatest blues song (Jimi H. not withstanding) Even Bishop's vocal takes the band down to a 'calm' level but retains the 'bluesiness' of the album. There are a few unattractive tracks but the above ones make this an undeniable collectable item. Go for it! Submitted by dgwg2001 (Canuck, Canada) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Incredible follow-up to Butterfield's first effort! Many reviews of this recording focus on the Indian influences and extended solos of East West and Work Song. Personally I think Work Song is fabulous but can take or leave East West. The real gem on this recording is "I've Got A Mind To Give Up Living (And Go Shopping Instead)" - possibly the greatest blues guitar solo ever recorded! Bloomfield was the maestro! Elvin Bishop's solo vocal on this recording is also special. Even the cover art on the first two Butterfield LPs/CDs was classic! Submitted by woodop (Denver, CO) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
A true classic For any young people who want to put together a collection of essential late 60's rock, this album is a must have. I own over 700 CD's and this album, which I've owned since it's release 39 years ago, is still among my very favorites. A great collection of songs performed by some of the best musicians in rock history.

$6.75 A surprise best-seller when it was first released, this mostly improvised pairing of singer/keyboardist/producer Al Kooper with two major guitar heroes of the day sounds fascinating all these years later precisely because of the distance of time--nobody makes records like this any more. The material runs the gamut from folk pop (covers of Donovan and Dylan), to blues ("Albert's Shuffle," "You Don't Love Me"), to heady jams ("His Holy Modal Majesty"), to big-band jazz ("Harvey's Tune").
All the tunes make effective templates for the kind off-the-cuff music-making that in less capable hands might have resulted in simple noodling. In fact, although Bloomfield and Stills don't play together on any of the cuts (Bloomfield played on one side of the original LP, Stills on the other), all three principals get off lots of ...

| | Blank & Jones Shingles CD (2006) (Import) Bonus Track; Japan

$43.65 German duo Blank & Jones make the kind of dance music that never seems to get any critical respect -- widely popular, very straightforward, guaranteed to soundtrack anything anywhere with the word "trance" in it and not name-dropped by hip DJs in general as a result. Which is an incredible pity, because as The Singles demonstrates, the duo clearly aren't out to push back frontiers but just to make people dance and have a good time, and more to the point, to do so with a heavy undercurrent of the kind of classic dark disco and proto-industrial beats they clearly grew up on. As such they slot much more into the realm of acts like Apoptygma Berzerk and Black Strobe more than might be guessed, and the gloss of Europop that slips and slides among their songs always seems to get spiked with the kind of pop/trance that first caught the ear of Wax Trax fanatics precisely because it was derived from similar roots. The Singles careens from one instant fix to another, starting with their inspired reworking of the Cure's "A Forest," with Robert Smith contributing the vocals. Other guest appearances that make clear where Blank & Jones see their lineage include Anne Clark on "The Hardest Heart" and, in a truly left-field move, the Church's Steve Kilbey on the extreme moodout of "Revealed." (In contrast, having Propaganda's legendary singer Claudia Brucken on "Unknown Treasure" is a more readily understandable nod to the past.) If some of the singles are more a pleasant collage of familiar elements -- and if the track listing is best heard in bursts rather than all the way through -- there's enough hotwiring and instant pop rushes going on to make The Singles worth listening to. ~ Ned Raggett
