Glenn Frey's first solo album plotted two Top 40 singles, with "I Found Somebody" going to number 31 in the summer of 1982 and the destitute-sounding "The One You Love" hitting number 15 two months later. With help from Jack Tempchin, who co-wrote the Eagles' "Peaceful Easy Feeling," the album reached number 32 on the U.S. charts, but it's Frey's perfectly guided vocals and impeccable talent for crafting laid-back love songs that make the album noteworthy. The saxophone from "The One You Love," which tags alongside the soothing chorus, makes the song even better, and "I Found Somebody" hints at the Eagles' warm, harmonic style. Even the average-sounding "All Those Lies" went to number 41, but efforts like "That Girl" and "She Can't Let Go" are thinned out too much, as Frey gets a little too involved with singer/songwriter colloquialisms. Some life is regained with a spirited attempt at Frankie Ford's "Sea Cruise," one of the album's real movers. With Frey's own production assistance, No Fun Aloud stands up as a modest debut album. ~ Mike DeGagne

No Fun Aloud CD music
$18.99 Although she's been performing since the early '90s, vocalist Patrice Pike is perhaps best known for her appearance on the 2006 reality TV show Rockstar: Supernova where she competed to become the lead singer of a supergroup which included Mötley Crüe drummer Tommy Lee. Labeled the "soccer mom" by some viewers underwhelmed by her low-key, somewhat detached stage presence, Pike in truth is a journeyman performer who has recorded professionally with various bands over the years, including Sister 7 who were signed to Arista in the late' 90s. Recorded prior to Patrice Pike's appearance on Rockstar, Unraveling is a solid if somewhat unremarkable post-show "debut" and fourth solo album for the singer/songwriter. Not surprisingly, the criticism most often leveled at Pike by the band that she was a bit boring and lacked a strong personality is basically the main problem here. These are workmanlike songs that find Pike moving from post-grunge and neo-psychedelic rockers to funky neo-soul anthems. Primarily, Unraveling reveals her as she was on the show, as a straight-ahead, adult alternative rock singer heavily influenced by such similarly minded artists as 4 Non Blondes, Alanis Morissette and Sarah McLachlan. $13.69 Check out more Retroactive Records metal releases at: www.cdbaby.com/all/brutalplanet http://www.tollbooth.org/2006/reviews/stairway.htmlThis one is METAL baby, pure metal. Yeah! I’m loving it. Retroactive Records continues its fine series of re-issues with this classic molten metal release from British power metal rockers Stairway. Originally this CD was released only in Japan, and its arrival on these shores is a matter of rejoicing for metal-heads everywhere. This is the real thing – melodic, hard rocking metal with melody and some very choice guitar playing. _No Rest – No Mercy_ features British flavored power metal in the style of Helloween, Iron Maiden, Barren Cross, and some of the classic Christian metal rockers of days of yore. The CD sounds very good – punchy and rocking hard in all the right places. Wrapping up this bit of metal magic is a cool old-school apocalyptic cover by Rodney Matthews. Lyrics are included. Remember those cool rocking Christian end-times metal CDs with great covers that you used to share with all of your friends? This should have been one of them! Sadly, I was unaware of Stairway before checking ...
