Ruben Blades Y Seis Del Solar: Ruben Blades (vocals, percussion); Oscar Hernandez, Ricardo Marrero (keyboards); Eddy Montalvo, Ralph Irizarry, Louis Rivera, Robert Ameen (percussion); Cliff Carter, Dean Bailen (programming). ESCENAS follows ... Full Descriptionon the heels of the epic BUSCANDO AMERICA with another powerful, if dire, dose of Ruben Blades' socially-conscious salsa-pop, backed again by the dynamic Son Del Solar. The album clearly makes a crossover bid with guest appearances by Linda Ronstadt and Joe Jackson, as well as bilingual lyrics in the package. As the title suggests, the material here paints scenes from Blades' typically keen barrio perspective.
Opening ESCENAS on an introspective note is "Cuentas Del Alma," a moving portrayal of a mother's fear of the dark and endless pining for her departed husband. To the sound of synth-wails and a salsa-inflected pop beat, Blades intones with dreadful finality the words, "heart dues can never be paid in full." The dirge-like "Tierra Dura" captures the dry, desperate famine of mid-'80s Ethiopia in both lyric and tone, with slowly-passing images of unforgiving deserts and a mournful melody. Moving into funkier territory, "Sorpresas" is the tough sequel to Blades' revered "Pedro Navaja" with its clever tale of thieves, deception, and the barrio night. "Silencios" is Blades' balladic duet with Linda Ronstadt, extra sugar cubes included.

Escenas CD music
$9.85 After honing his salsa chops in the 1970s in lengthy stints with the bands of Ray Barretto and Willie Colon, Panamanian Ruben Blades formed his own band, Seis del Solar. BUSCANDO AMERICA, Seis del Solar's first album, introduces Blades's unique fusion of salsa, rock, and Caribbean rhythms, and the full range of Blades' literate, witty lyrics and expressive vocal flair. Though the politically pointed angle of Blades's words will be lost on those with a language barrier (Blades sings only in his native Spanish), the inventive, accessible nature of his music should appeal to many.
Blades concocts a musical stew that includes Latin jazz ("Todos Vuelven"), reggae ("Desapariciones"), African folk ("Caminos Verdes"), and art music (the pell-mell narrative of "G.D.B.D."). The opening cut, "Decisiones," kicks off with a retro-'50s doo-wop intro before segueing into high-octane salsa. Remarkably, Blades pulls off his synthesis of styles with aplomb, remaining true to his Latin roots even while pushing and expanding his musical vision. BUSCANDO AMERICA, Blades's first fully developed personal statement, is the opening salvo in the ...

$11.39 Instantly upbeat and crackling with energy, ANTECEDENTE sees a further crystallization of Ruben Blades' reinvention of salsa as a format for the barrio narrative. The material lies for the most part in a realm of romance and nostalgia, and unlike other albums with Seis Del Solar, the keyboards have been set down and the horns picked back up for a more straight-ahead salsa feel.
"La Marea" and "Juana Mayo" are thick cuts of hard salsa, the latter a darkly poetic depiction of a prostitute's endless and anonymous nightwalking. "'Tas Caliente" goes on a joyride full of piquant rhythmic breaks as Ruben admonishes a muchacho to change his low-life ways "or one of these days you're gonna get it." "Patria" steals the show here though, with its simple, slowly swelling Afro-Cuban rhythmic accompaniment and arresting ode to the "Motherland." Far from any jingoistic chest-pounding, Ruben offers a sunny, open vision of the word as he heartily proclaims, "...little brother, Motherland is so many beautiful things!"

Escenas album
$9.85 CUANDO LOS ANGELES LLORAN was nominated for a 1996 Grammy Award for Best Latin Pop Performance.
Although stylistically similar to DONDE JUGARAN LOS NINOS, CUANDO LOS ANGELES LLORAN ("When the Angels Cry") is a relatively harder-rocking, stripped-down record for Mexican pop-rock outfit Mana. The sweet, atmospheric synth sounds of past records are pushed more to the background and Sergio Vallin joins the band as first-chair guitarist, with a piercing, heavy metal sound that shifts seamlessly between crunching chords and soaring, Van Halen-esque leads. Mana's members seem to gel more than ever as a distinct band here, and the result is some of the tightest songwriting and production in their discography.
"Como Un Perro Enloquecido" ("Like a Mad Dog") is pure fun, alternating between Police-style ragga rhythms and double-time, up-tempo rock & roll. Peppered with staccato horn breaks, "Dejame Entrar" is a funky number, with vocalist Fher insisting on access to his lover's soul. The title track is Mana's touching tribute to murdered Brazilian environmental and indigenous land rights activist Chico Mendes. It opens with the distant toll of church bells and a poignant acoustic guitar vignette by Vallin, giving way to slow-grooving, stirring verses about Mendes' life and a chorus striped with characteristically seamless vocal harmonies.
