| | Ruben Blades Escenas CD Ruben Blades Discography of CDs
Ruben Blades Y Seis Del Solar: Ruben Blades (vocals, percussion); Oscar Hernandez, Ricardo Marrero (keyboards); Eddy Montalvo, Ralph Irizarry, Louis Rivera, Robert Ameen (percussion); Cliff Carter, Dean Bailen (programming).
ESCENAS follows on the heels of the epic BUSCANDO AMERICA with another powerful, if dire, dose of Ruben Blades' socially-conscious salsa-pop, backed again by the dynamic Son Del Solar. The album clearly makes a crossover bid with guest appearances by Linda Ronstadt and Joe Jackson, as well as bilingual lyrics in the package. As the title suggests, the material here paints scenes from Blades' typically keen barrio perspective.
Opening ESCENAS on an introspective note is "Cuentas Del Alma," a moving portrayal of a mother's fear of the dark and endless pining for her departed husband. To the sound of synth-wails and a salsa-inflected pop beat, Blades intones with dreadful finality the words, "heart dues can never be paid in full." The dirge-like "Tierra Dura" captures the dry, desperate famine of mid-'80s Ethiopia in both lyric and tone, with slowly-passing images of unforgiving deserts and a mournful melody. Moving into funkier territory, "Sorpresas" is the tough sequel to Blades' revered "Pedro Navaja" with its clever tale of thieves, deception, and the barrio night. "Silencios" is Blades' balladic duet with Linda Ronstadt, extra sugar cubes included.

$5.99 The finest example of perfect disco pop, and a record that should be prescribed to musical snobs and manic depressives. The album is a true ambassador of what pop music can be. Jackson whoops and dances through a suite of unforgettable melodies that should be danced to with a smile on your face. Each track offers at least one musical hook, whether it is the beauty ...

It's always a sign that a group is hot if they release a holiday album mere months after their debut. That's the case with *NSYNC. Their debut was released in America in late March, and in early December, Home for Christmas hit the shelves. Much of the album is devoted to newer material, with only a handful of songs qualifying as standards: "The Christmas Song," "The First Noel," and "O Holy Night." All of it is given the familiar *NSYNC sheen, alternating ...

Escenas CD music
$13.45 The first album released after Johannes Pappert's departure from Kraan is an uneven affair. There are flashes of inspiration, like the excellent musical interplay in "Volgas Ahoi," that show that the band could still rock out when they wanted to. Unfortunately for every such moment there are two in which the band sounds merely competent. The second half of the album is particularly uneven and sounds like a collection of outtakes; it's hard to imagine any of them making it onto any previous Kraan album. The band still had amazing instrumental prowess, but not the material to make good use of it. ...
| | Kind Of Like Spitting Thrill Of The Hunt CD (2006)
Escenas music CDs
$11.35 Although accidents of geography have led to Ben Barnett getting compared to another acoustic-oriented Portland-based singer/songwriter, Elliott Smith, Kind of Like Spitting's The Thrill of the Hunt lacks the mopey self-seriousness of the late Heatmiser leader's work. Not only are some of the songs overtly comic ("Share the Road" runs very close to the loopy anti-folk of Jeffrey Lewis), Barnett has an ongoing Web covers project, some of the fruits of which are here, including half-serious takes on Big Star's "Thirteen" ...
