MC Shinehead kicked off his career with UNITY, his 1988 debut. Like the albums that would follow in its wake, UNITY is a potent combination of straight-up hip-hop and Jamaican dancehall and reggae. Shinehead can also be identified by his positive social messages (a relatively anomalous quality in contemporary hip-hop), as exemplified in tracks like "Gimme No Crack" and the title cut. Producers Davy D. and the late, great Jam Master Jay lend their beatmaking talents throughout.
Shinehead's unique fusion of dancehall and hip-hop might've had something to do with why it failed to make much of a dent in any of the Billboard charts. While reggae's influence upon hip-hop was made known at the time with MCs like KRS-One, no one was truly blending the two styles like Shinehead. Unity is a little too reggae to be considered straight hip-hop, and it's a little too hip-hop to be considered straight reggae. Plus, Unity was too lighthearted and positive to catch the ears of hip-hop heads who were beginning to lean on harsher sounds that were developing. Still, it's a fun and accomplished start for the MC. Davy D. and Jam Master Jay lend production skills throughout. ~ Andy Kellman

The third effort from contemporary soulster Lyfe Jennings fits the mold of his previous releases in its mixture of thoughtful, introspective themes and sleek, urban contemporary sounds. Jennings recruits friends the Underdogs and Wyclef Jean (who collaborates on the Bob Marley-influenced "Wild, Wild, Wild") to craft the general vibe of LYFE CHANCE, but it's his show through and through.
There are a few unusual instances of Jennings upping the tempo, as on the catchy jam "Old School" (which features a guest appearance from Snoop Dogg), but for the most part the disc keeps it low and in the cut, with standouts like "Keep on Dreaming" and "Never Never Land" riding sweet mid-to-downtempo grooves.
