For this 1989 release, Bill Frisell's regular quartet (bassist Kermit Driscoll, drummer Joey Baron and cellist Hank Roberts) is sometimes augmented or otherwise altered in a set that again showcases the guitarist/composer's varied interests. A trio of saxophonists joins the quartet for the four-piece suite, "Some Song And Dance." John Zorn , with whom Frisell played in Naked City, produced the high-energy, cinematically-charged "Hard Plains Drifter." Arto Lindsay also plays guitar on several tracks and sings the album's beautiful closer, "Steady, Girl," a foretaste of his own forays into Brazilian music. This is a diverse set, anchored by Frisell's compositions and warm musical character.

Before We Were Born music CDs
$14.69 The Johnny Lewis Quartet was a standard organ trio-plus-tenor sax combo working in restaurants and nightclubs in the Pacific Northwest when the group released its sole album, 1972's Shuckin' 'n Jivin', in a tiny self-pressing. Recorded live at the Trojan Horse restaurant in Seattle, Shuckin' 'n Jivin' documents nothing more than a fairly hot set by a very good supper club soul-jazz combo. Tenor Johnny Lewis, organ and clavinet player James (Moody) Thompson, guitarist Joe Villa, and drummer Kenneth Drake are all skilled players with a knack ...
| | Joe Meek Portrait Of A Genius: The RGM Legacy CDs (2005) England
Before We Were Born songs
$59.39 A treasure trove for collectors, but an excellent introduction, too, for anybody captivated by the Joe Meek legend, but uncertain where to start among the myriad compilations and collections that already litter the shelves, Portrait of a Genius is the unequivocally titled box set that Meek's reputation has always demanded. The accompanying glossy booklet recounts the sheer effort that went into creating a balanced mix of the familiar, the worthy, and the rare, and the first thing that must be said is, they succeeded. Even longtime connoisseurs will stumble upon sufficient oddities to render this a worthwhile purchase, as the hitherto uncollected likes of Kenny Hollywood's "Magic Star" (a vocal version of "Telstar") rubs shoulders with the so familiar hit, a previously unreleased Gene Vincent recording meets a German-language rendition of the Honeycombs' "Have I the Right," and so on. Also notable is the attention lavished on Meek's apprenticeship -- one entire disc is given over ...

This album joined the talents of legendary jazz singer Sarah Vaughan with those of 24-year-old wonder-trumpeter Clifford Brown for a December, 1954 released on Mercury Records subsidiary EmArcy. A warm and welcoming hiss washes over this album, giving it a graceful, familiar patina. One feels like a privileged listener let in on an intimate closed session.
Brown's playing is sharp and confident throughout, ...
