For this 1989 release, Bill Frisell's regular quartet (bassist Kermit Driscoll, drummer Joey Baron and cellist Hank Roberts) is sometimes augmented or otherwise altered in a set that again showcases the guitarist/composer's varied interests. A trio of saxophonists joins the quartet for the four-piece suite, "Some Song And Dance." John Zorn , with whom Frisell played in Naked City, produced the high-energy, cinematically-charged "Hard Plains Drifter." Arto Lindsay also plays guitar on several tracks and sings the album's beautiful closer, "Steady, Girl," a foretaste of his own forays into Brazilian music. This is a diverse set, anchored by Frisell's compositions and warm musical character.

$15.05 This 1993 album is a perfect culmination of the varied strains which have informed Bill Frisell's music. His long-time rhythm section of drummer Joey Baron and bass player Kermit Driscoll are on hand, and other voicings come from clarinetist Don Byron and accordionist Guy Klucevsek.

| | Bill Frisell Go West: Music For The Films Of Buster Keaton CD (1995)
Before We Were Born music CDs
$15.25 Bill Frisell's sumptuous use of space, echo and other ambient devices gives his playing a profoundly cinematic bent. Seemingly alone among modern jazz (or jazz-influenced) guitarists, he is less concerned with the number of notes played than with painting a picture in sound. Indeed, he spent much of 1994 devoted to soundtracks, including cartoonist Gary "The Far Side" Larson's first animated special.
But in taking on the silent movies of Buster Keaton, Frisell has presented himself with a more profound challenge, to wit: to create a living, breathing musical accompaniment--in real time--much as silent movie musicians did over 75 years ago. "Go West" is among the most bittersweet of Keaton's feature films, as his down-and-out character is uprooted and attempts to prove his mettle in cattle country. On "Down On Luck" (Frisell's opening loop, with it's I-Think-I-Can whistlestop cadence and mournful minor theme), ...

| | Joe Meek Portrait Of A Genius: The RGM Legacy CDs (2005) England
Before We Were Born album
$51.09 A treasure trove for collectors, but an excellent introduction, too, for anybody captivated by the Joe Meek legend, but uncertain where to start among the myriad compilations and collections that already litter the shelves, Portrait of a Genius is the unequivocally titled box set that Meek's reputation has always demanded. The accompanying glossy booklet recounts the sheer effort that went into creating a balanced mix of the familiar, the worthy, and the rare, and the first thing that must be said is, they succeeded. Even longtime connoisseurs will stumble upon sufficient oddities to render this a worthwhile purchase, as the hitherto uncollected likes of Kenny Hollywood's "Magic Star" (a vocal version of "Telstar") rubs shoulders with the so familiar hit, a previously unreleased Gene Vincent recording meets a German-language rendition of the Honeycombs' "Have I the ...
