When a genre-defining group like Metallica, whose past albums have rocked the charts with virtually no airplay, enlists the aid of a hit-making producer like Bob Rock, the result is bound to be monumental. METALLICA, their sixth studio release, surpasses all expectations.
METALLICA is an extremely heavy album. It carries a presence, a huge, live sound different from that heard on their previous recordings. What once could not be tamed has been refined, resulting in a fuller, more powerful guitar sound in an already guitar-intensive band. They have evolved from the messy, unabashed thrashers of their youth into a more confident, poised and angry bunch, not only retaining their fire but stoking it into a chunky, tight-fisted maelstrom of scowling energy.
Serious riffs provide punch and punctuation for James Hetfield's gruff vocals which rage against society and religion, and revel in suspicion and sarcasm. METALLICA is full of songs just as potent as the hugely popular "Enter Sandman," yet is not as complicated as their recent albums have seemed. "Sad But True," which is just as low down and dirty as anything labeled "grunge," exemplifies the poise of the metal band that can foresee the punchlines to their riffs and has the patience to wait for them.

This album is, in my opinion, the greatest album ever. Others are close, like Led Zeppelin 4 or Jimi Hendrix-Band of Gypsies, but none can compare to the perfectness of this album. If you think Metallica have sold out, then you are missing a lot of great stuff. and to tell the truth, since limp bizkit and korn are the most popular bands these days, why havnt metallica just milked that cow? anyhow, they will always be my favorites no matter what anyone says. and this album is them at thier finest.

Heavy as it gets
This is the Metallica album I grew up with
and it's the album that if you don't have, then your're not a true metallica fan, ACDC has Back in Black, Green Day has American Idiot, Slayer has Reign in Blood.
Do you get what I am saying? this is the Metallica album You gotta have. You want heavy, this is heavy.

One of the greatest CDs of all time. The band is timeless. The music is terrific. Every song takes you back like the first time you heard it. Highly recommended.

Metallica turned the metal world on its ear with their debut album, KILL 'EM ALL and then blew its mind with the follow-up, RIDE THE LIGHTNING. The riffs and arrangements are more intricate, the lyrics are more intelligent and biting and James Hetfield's growl is meaner. The set starts out with two tunes that would have been right at home on KILL 'EM ALL, but the next two are slower and more involved. "Ride The Lightning" is a slow (by Metallica's standards) dirge about the futility of war. "Fade To Black" is a ballad (!) that builds to an instrumental coda featuring the guitar melodies that the band would later base their sound around. It's also Hetfield's first attempt at singing in tune. The most ambitious song is a dense instrumental, "The Call Of Ktulu," that starts with a single arpeggiated guitar and slowly adds layer upon layer, building in intensity until it all comes crashing down nine minutes later.

MASTER OF PUPPETS was Metallica's last album with bass player Cliff Burton. Burton was killed in a traffic accident. He was replaced by Jason Newsted.
Metallica's irresistible rise to the top continued with this enigmatic 1986 album. Metallica was a constant touring unit by this point, and their combination of light and dark and their deft staccato delivery, especially on the title track, came brusquely through. Their ever-lengthening arrangements (three songs came in at over eight minutes), bolstered by the precise snap of Hetfield's vocals, testified to their undeniable power. The striding "Battery," the darkly lit "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)," as well as the complex instrumental "Orion" all gave powerful testament to their ever-developing skill and vision.

Occasionally one album can be pinpointed as the turning point in a musical genre. KILL 'EM ALL is one such album and, boy, did the heavy metal genre need a transfusion of new blood. Herein trad metal was stripped of its late-70s pomposity and reduced to its base element of brutal sonic force. The rhythm section of Burton and Ulrich do a masterful job, as does rhythm guitar ace and vocalist James Hetfield, on a set that owes a debt to punk as much as to Iron Maiden and Judas Priest. The phantasmagorical allusions are still there in the lyrics, as are some long-winded guitar solos, but otherwise KILL 'EM ALL promised a creative rebirth for hard rock.

Following the tragic death of bassist Cliff Burton, Metallica regrouped with Flotsam & Jetsam bassist Jason Newsted to record this ambitious double album. Metallica made their reputation playing complex music at superhuman speed, and when James Hetfield's lyrics caught up with his compositional skills, the band became a force to be reckoned with. Everything came together on 1986's MASTER OF PUPPETS, and JUSTICE picks up where PUPPETS left off.
Utilizing intricate yet crunching riffs, layered guitar melodies and intelligent lyrics, Metallica forged an identity as the leader of '80s metal. Hetfield's lyrics are often quite dark, touching on injustice (the title song), insanity ("The Frayed Ends Of Sanity") and his own troubled childhood ("Dyers Eve"). They also had a progressive streak a mile wide, as shown in the involved arrangements that often brought the song lengths close to 10 minutes. JUSTICE also marked a turning point for drummer Lars Ulrich, who began replacing his off-kilter playing with a more straightforward groove approach, and for the band, who made their first video (for "One") and thus scored their first hit.

The kings of speed metal have never been keen on being labeled, and LOAD, which follows up the 1991 mega-hit METALLICA, is a surprising pastiche of sonic fury. Metallica still rocks hard. James Hetfield's lyrics are still full of venom and anger, and the music still could scare small children. But the band is ready to show off other sides of its craft. "Hero Of The Day" sounds like an R.E.M. song, albeit a heavy one, with its tender beginning and ending confluence of harmonized vocals and catchy guitar riffs. A dose of the blues can be heard in the slow-burning "Bleeding Me," and a downright country twang pervades "Mama Said."
Still, this is a metal album, and there are headbanging riffs o'plenty. LOAD may seem like a departure from the Metallica "norm," but it's actually what the band has been doing all along: writing well-crafted songs without a regard for what others think. The only difference is that the one-time denizens of the underground now have the world's rapt attention.

When Metallica recorded 1996's LOAD, the studio sessions were fruitful enough for the band to put out two records. A year and a half later, RELOAD is the inevitable follow-up. Stretching beyond Metallica's speed metal roots, RELOAD is a continuation of the experimentation that dismayed many old fans and welcomed in many new ones. As a result, many Metallica firsts are reached on their eighth album. Some anomalies include recruiting the legendary Marianne Faithfull to contribute backing vocals on "The Memory Remains" and the addition of hurdy-gurdy and violin to the mix of the wistful "Low Man's Lyric." Throughout all this experimentation, Metallica still plays hard and fast, particularly on the metal groove of "Fuel" and the relentless pounding of "Where The Wild Things Are," (a title borrowed from children's author Maurice Sendak). Metallica continues to reinvent itself in a genre where mediocrity is always just around the corner.

Not to be confused with the 1975 release of the same name, Nazareth's GREATEST HITS collection from 1996 expands the original's meager 12 tracks to a meaty 18 cuts clocking in at more than 72 minutes. The Scottish band's bluesy heavy metal made them one of the '70s top hard rock acts, and all their major rockers and power ballads can be found here.
Among these are the roaring rocker "Hair of the Dog" (a song that Guns N' Roses would cover on their 1993 all covers album, THE SPAGHETTI INCIDENT), "Expect No Mercy," "Razamanaz," "Broken Down Angel," "Shanghai'd in Shanghai," and of course, the proto-power ballad "Love Hurts." GREATEST HITS covers all the bases, making it an essential purchase for Nazareth fans everywhere.

Let us all be thankful that Ozzy's retirement didn't stick. It supposedly lasted for three days, after which he got bored and started working on this project. Heavy, riff-intensive tunes, progressive song structures and a little psychedelia give OZZMOSIS a definite Sabbath flavor. Ozzy must have been in touch with whatever inspired early classics like PARANOID and MASTERS OF REALITY. Witness the extremely chunky "Thunder Underground," which can stand up next to "Sweet Leaf" and "Symptom Of The Universe" as an archetype of hard rock. The trippy guitar in "Ghost Behind My Eyes" and "Denial" are not some young Ozzy-wannabe going for a retro sound--this man was there, "Planet Caravan"ing.
Still, this heavy metal daddy in touch with his roots is also hip to the genre's latest sound. OZZMOSIS has a live, up-front feeling, thanks to producer Michael Beinhorn (Red Hot Chili Peppers, Soundgarden). Zakk Wylde's huge, raw guitar also plays a major role. He provides scorching solos, lush textures and juicy fills with a muscular tone and minimal effects--the perfect complements to Osbourne's songwriting.
But more important than the raging guitars and the big sound is attitude. Ozzy's spunk has indeed rejected retirement. His songs still spew biting commentary at whoever will listen. "Your bulls**t culture licking can't stop the deathwatch ticking/You're only mortal after all," he warns on "Thunder Underground." Ozzy himself may not be immortal, but OZZMOSIS sounds like it is.

Despite its title, RCA/Legacy's 2005 release 16 Biggest Hits doesn't necessarily contain all of Charley Pride's biggest hit singles. Such country Top Ten hits as "Kaw-Liga" and "All His Children" are missing, so it can't be considered a complete hits overview. That said, 16 Biggest Hits has most of Pride's very biggest singles, including "(I'm So) Afraid of Losing You Again," "All I Have to Offer You (Is Me)," "Is Anybody Goin' to San Antone," "Kiss an Angel Good Mornin'," "It's Gonna Take a Little Bit Longer," "A Shoulder to Cry On," and "Hope You're Feelin' Me (Like I'm Feelin' You)." The perfect musical soundtrack to accompany entering a gothic church? Nahemah's third release overall, 2007's The Second Philosophy isn't quite that (at last check, heavy metal wasn't the chief musical listening preference of bishops worldwide), but it does contain some unmistakable symphonic elements. Vocalist Pablo Egido's growling technique is impeccable throughout and the rest of the lads bash out their epic-sounding metal with glee, with the sounds of strings added at just the precise moments for maximum dramatic effect. Problem is, there's an absolute boatload of similar sounding metal acts on the market circa 2007, and there's not a heck of a lot to differentiate Nahemah from say, oh, Opeth, for instance. If mammoth-sounding metal is your thing, this Second Philosophy may make sense, but it's not much different than the other aforementioned metallic philosophies that predated it. ~ Greg Prato

Inarticulate Nature Boy was my first major label release after School Of Fish broke up.I rented a groovy wooden house in the trees in Topanga Canyon, just outside of Los Angeles. We brought the studio there and I continued the tradition that I'd started on Beautiful Nowhere of recording the record myself, in a home environment, only this time I was fortunate enough to have the company of fantabulous engineer/ Co-producer, Tony Phillips (Seal, Pete Townshend, Joni Mitchell), and a top notch studio. We called it the Tree House and began recording. I took a break from the wall of guitar sound of my previous band and experimented with bringing back my funky roots while holding on to my love for songs and melody. My goal was, and come to think of it still is, to marry "Black" and "White" music in the most organic way possible, because it always feels like the best, and most inspiring place for me to be. This CD is one of the earlier voyages out to that world and will make both you and your speakers very happy. ONLY AVAILABLE as long as I can get copies, have a wonderful ride.Josh
