Originally recorded in 1988, this album was previously available only at the band's concerts. Phish: Trey Anastacio (vocals, guitar); Jonathan Fishman (vocals, trombone, drums); Page McConnell (vocals, piano); Mike Gordon (vocals, bass). Principally recorded at Euphoria Sound Studios, Revere, Massachusetts in 1988. With great sound and better playing, Phish's debut Junta is highly recommended whether you're starting to discover Phish or are backing up to the beginning. It may be a bit long-winded and unfocused, yet it establishes their dedication to musical exploration effectively -- not to mention the typical wild and woolly Phish humor spilling out all over the lengthy tracks. [A 2-CD Elektra reissue features six bonus tracks, including three recorded live in 1988 at Nectar's (the club that gave Phish their start with a regular gig). The live tracks are somewhat dubious in sonic terms, but they're excellent for revealing the improvisational side of the band -- the 25:31 "Union Federal" totters to a start and has a couple of wobbly moments, but it's actually fun to listen to.] ~ Steven McDonald & David Jehnzen At the time they recorded their first album, the 1988 double-disc JUNTA, Phish were just an unsigned band from the not-exactly-happening college town of Burlington, Vermont. But by the time Elektra reissued the album, adding 40 minutes' worth of previously unissued live tracks from the band's early days onto disc two, Phish were both the leading lights of the jam band scene and the group most likely to take up the Grateful Dead's torch. What's most surprising about JUNTA is how fully-formed the Phish aesthetic is; despite its somewhat thin sound, the album has the loose, shaggy feel of the group's live sets and the band's trademark sense of oddball humor, as well as their knack for organic, evolving arrangements, on full display throughout songs like "David Bowie" and the 25-minute live showcase "Union Federal." Later albums added just a bit more structure and a hint of pop sheen to the proceedings, but JUNTA proves that Phish arrived on the scene basically fully formed.

Junta Music Review Average Rating: (4.4 out of 5 stars) Junta, one of the best This is one of my favorite albums of all time. This album consists of four guys at their most ambitious, aggressive and progressive time in their musical career. What these musicians created on this album is truly magnificent, ranging from the obvious showstopping almost instrumental; you enjoy myself, to epic tales of fee and esther. oldschool phish thats what im talking about ladies and gents! their first album with a lot of their earliest songs. just listen to trey's nasty guitar riffs and tunes....sick guitarist. listen to gordo's bass - page's piano - and fish's drums. the four are talented musicians and they know how to play. the jams are great. PHISH's best work! I truly believe that Phish's best work is on this album. When i first heard it, i was astounded at the strange themes complemented by complex rhythms and grooves. It is a masterpiece that included my favorites "You Enjoy Myself" and "The Divided Sky". If you want to hear real PHISH, you must buy this album!!! Trey loved that Genesis/Crimson/Zappa sound!!!! Junta is without a doubt a progressive rock album but gets looked over because it's by Phish. Some of the most complex rock compositions ever written are on this album. Guitarist Trey Anastasio was focused on MUSIC not on fame. The sound is raw and Trey is on the ball, boy do I miss those days!! Submitted by scijigglephish (Johnson,VT/Milford,CT) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Early Phish This is the first phish disc that I ever heard. This one has smart, quirky, compositional, and great jamming qualities to it. You can tell that Phish had alot of talent on this album. Fluffhead, Contact, Icculus are a few awesome songs to mention! Submitted by a reviewer (columbus, ohio) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | Bardo Pond Bufo Alvarius Amen 29:15 CD (1995)
Junta
$11.85 It starts with feedback, hum, and fuzz, then a heavy guitar riff emerging from the murk -- arguably Bardo Pond in a nutshell. Then again, enough other bands do the same thing, so why should the Pond get singled out? It's hard to pin down an exact reason, but whatever "it" is that a band needs to connect, they've got it. The slow, stony pace that "Adhesive" establishes for Bufo Alvarius Amen 29:15 continues through the album's remaining tracks, but in such a way that Bardo Pond rapidly become their own band and not merely the sum of their influences. ...

Recorded at Ocean Way, UTP, Nashville, Tennessee; Circle House, Studio Center, Miami, Florida. This is an example of the Southern Rap "screwed" mix style. Juvenile returned in late 2003 with a slightly atypical album, Juve the Great, after having dropped off for roughly three years, which is a long time in rap years. A lot of wonder arose during his absence. In fact, a lot of wonder had arisen at the time of his previous release, Project English (2001). At that time, rumors circulated widely that Cash Money Records' top gun was breaking away from the pack, which was indeed what happened in the end, as Juvenile returned to the underground and formed his own collective, the UTP Playas (Uptown Project Playas), with whom he recorded a posse album, The Compilation (2002). Well, not much came of that album (for ...

| | Beige 01 CD (2006)
Junta
$14.79 the beige's music is atmospheric, understated, wry and jazzy with off-kilter pop leanings, but sometimes not. the quintet's live shows feature broad strokes of improvisation. minimalist, maximalist. now with spikier edges. the beige complement most interiors. Recent praise for the debut cd "01": "The Beige's wonderfully designed CD is home to a collection of textured, rootsy folk-pop music heavy on the ambient atmosphere...a brilliant level of depth to the recording...Ladies and gents, meet your new favourite atmospheric roots-pop band." -- Indieville.com "The Beige is a new musical force in Vancouver" -- Marke Andrews, Vancouver Sun. "Let’s not try too hard to categorize the Beige. We’ll just say that Maddocks writes damn good songs that allow the band to take all sorts of twists and turns through interesting corners of the sonic spectrum." --Eden Munro, Vue Weekly "The result is a disc of literate roots-pop for urban dwellers, with a we-get-there-when-we-do attitude that coalesces into dusty, lovely ballads." -- Shawn Conner, Vancouver Courier. "Moody atmosphere in a tight ensemble sound" -- Tom Harrison, Vancouver Province. "A gorgeously spacious thing.... as melodic and lyrically striking as Wilco at its most incisive--and more overtly catchy." -- Ken Eisner, The Georgia Straight. instead of trying to recreate a live performance for their debut cd, 01, the beige applied an improv approach to the recording/mixing process itself. they experimented with subtle loops and the odd field recording. it's an understated production. while 01 captures the atmospheric quality of the beige, all in all it's a quiet, layered album with few special effects. they did almost all their own stunts, but the beige's 01 does feature guest appearances by some of vancouver's finest musicians. A recent article about the beige in The Georgia Straight:Thursday, August 3The Beige is anything but blandBy Ken Eisner When the lights went down at the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre on July 22, listeners packed into the Star Theatre were treated to an intensely introspective set from the Beige. Their music might be called shoegazing, although the Vancouver band’s sound is too rootsy for that label. Anyway, circumstances made listeners look up, not down.“It was almost pitch black,” recalled Beige guitarist Jon Wood the next afternoon, “but that just made ...
