Audio Mixer: Ed Thacker. Recording information: American Recording Co., Woodland Hills, CA (10/1993/11/1993). Hoist is the most concise Phish album to date, but that's not necessarily a compliment. Phish's strength is not songcraft or hooks, it's the band's love of free-form song structures and extended jams. When the group's sound is reduced to its core, as it is on Hoist, it isn't quite as compelling. Nevertheless, the album is an improvement on the dismal Rift and features several fine cuts. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

| Hoist Music Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) it kicks ass phish rocks Submitted by a reviewer (Decatur, AL) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.
Tower of Power Horns + Phish = PHUN!!! Hoist is the story of a band going to the big, bad state of California to make an rock album. This album is supposed to be Phish's bust out album into the mainstream. Ha boy was Elektra dissapointed. I think Down With Disease was shown twice on MTV: once at 1 o clock in the morning and the other on Beavis and Butthead. It's a great pop album and the majority of the album translates amazingly on stage.. I just miss the old proggy Phish. Submitted by scijigglephish (Johnson,VT/Milford,CT) Was This Review Helpful? Phish's most prolific album In 1994, this album seemed ahead of it's time.Plenty of guests, and cathchy riff's. The horns, banjo's and bela fleck make this album one of my favorite, listened to often. The more you hear hoist the more you want to! Submitted by a reviewer (columbus, ohio) Was This Review Helpful? Hoist
$14.09 Audio Mixer: Randy Staub . When Layne Staley died from a drug overdose in 2002, it had already been several years since most Alice in Chains fans stopped hoping for a new album. The singer had become a recluse since the late-`90s, and there was little indication that AIC would ever again produce much in the way of new music. As a result, when the remaining members reunited to release BLACK GIVES WAY TO BLUE in 2009, expectations were low. To the delight of all however, the album proved to be perhaps the Seattle combo's most energetic and consistent effort since its masterpiece DIRT. Perhaps the most surprising element of the new record was how much it sounded exactly ...

| | Seekonk For Barbara Lee CD (2003)
Hoist
$13.89 -----Full-length CDNov 2003KC029 Seekonk makes music that is sad and warm and wise.It is music designed for the listening room, particularly the inner one you always carry around with you, bustling with that ever-present dialogue. It helps quiet things down in there.Seekonk is five players from Portland, Maine who like to try different instruments on for size, including a cello, trombone, xylophone, and bowed amplified birdcage. The band began as a result of two guys getting dumped hard by their sweethearts within weeks of each other. Songs happened. Then they asked a girl who lived on an island to sing these songs for them. Makes sense somehow. Some have said Seekonk reminds them of other bands like Pink Floyd, Low, The Velvet Underground, and Neil Young. Seekonk is not averse to being called a "head" band.Seekonk's debut album For Barbara Lee sounds particularly lovely in the here and now. And yet it has an ageless quality. That's a pretty neat trick. Here indeed is music as inviting as any you might hold dear.Seekonk played its first show as a 3-piece in March 2002 at lead singer Shana's art opening, having been together for less than two months. They had only five originals and two covers (by Neil Young and Low) in their repertoire. The five-piece consolidated that summer and began committing some songs to tape in the fall, recording "For Barbara Lee" in March 2003 at Big Sound with Jonathan Wyman engineering.
Seekonk includes: Dave Noyes (vocals, guitar, cello, trombone, Fender Rhodes piano, keyboards); Patrick Corrigan (vocals, electric & acoustic guitars, keyboards, vibraphone, drums, sound effects); Todd Hutcheson (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, Fender Rhodes piano); Shana Barry (vocals, keyboards, Theremin); The Maine Man Choir (vocals); Jason Ingalls (xylophone, drums, percussion). Personnel: Todd Hutchisen (vocals, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, Fender Rhodes piano); ...

| | Lisa Germano In The Maybe World CD (2006)
Hoist
$12.95 Personnel: Johnny Marr (guitar); Joey Waronker (drums). Best known for her 1990s solo work on 4AD and stints performing with the likes of John Mellencamp and Iggy Pop, multi-instrumentalist/vocalist Lisa Germano began a new chapter in her remarkably varied career with 2006's IN THE MAYBE WORLD, her debut on Young God Records, the label founded by Michael Gira (Swans/the Angels of Light). On these 12 tracks, Germano creates a delicate, dreamy atmosphere that envelops her bittersweet melodies, as exemplified by the spare "Too Much Space," the lilting "Golden Cities," and the appropriately winsome "In the Land of Fairies." These tunes drift in and out like transmissions from a slightly foreboding fantasy world, making for a fascinating album that defiantly avoids almost all modern pop trappings. It's hard to imagine a more perfect home for Lisa Germano's delicately challenging music than the Young God label. True, the ethereal sound of Geek the Girl and Excerpts from a Love Circus made her a pretty good fit for 4AD's roster, but the unflinching, often disturbing honesty of her work -- and her equally unflinching commitment to it -- is much closer to the outlook of Michael Gira and the other artists he supports. As always, In the Maybe World pairs warm, enveloping sonics with Germano's gently troubling way of questioning why things are the way they are. And, as always, In the Maybe World rewards close listening and the time spent with it. Germano's previous album, Lullaby for Liquid Pig, was an exploration of -- and a kiss-off to -- addictions, particularly alcohol. This time, she examines death in its various forms, whether it's the end of a life, a relationship, or an idea. Germano is such an intimate, vulnerable-sounding artist that it's easy to assume that music isn't just her life, but her life is her music. In the Maybe World ranges from clearly personal songs like the candle-lit "Golden Cities," which deals with the death of her cat Miamo-Tutti, whom she immortalized on several songs throughout her career (and because she's such an intimate ...
