Moving the guitars forward in the mix paid off in spades for Clutch, who continued with their familiar formula of mixing Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath on their sophomore album. Without straying at all from its roots, the band adds a little more funk to its sound à la Primus, which makes for a more consistent set of songs than last time. Not to mention that the stars shine brighter than they did last time around: "Spacegrass" alone should have become an instant classic, but following minor rotation on hard rock stations, the song -- and the band with it -- was delegated a cult status, compared to the likes of contemporaries Coal Chamber and Korn. ~ Jeremy Ulrey

Every time I put this CD, it makes me laugh (SERIOUSLY). Clever, witty lyrics dominate but more like musicianship counts esp. Spacegrass. This album has more than just cult status. It rocks anyone's world :)

Clutch album

THE ELEPHANT RIDERS is an Enhanced CD containing both a full audio program as well as multimedia computer files and free access to the internet. Principally recorded at Electric Lady Studios and Manhattan Center Studios, New York, New York. True to its title, THE ELEPHANT RIDERS by Maryland natives Clutch is a mighty behemoth of sound, maintaining a perfectly frightening level of pure testosterone throughout. The sheer machismo is given a disarming level of agility by acrobatic drummer Jean-Paul Gaster, who employs funky accents and daring meter switches to smarten up Clutch's Neanderthal assault. With guitars as sinewy as they are mighty, the beefy sound of Clutch recalls the thick lead work of early Kiss. However, any nostalgia is quickly dismissed by such modern touches as the wildly manipulated multi-track vocals "Ship Of Gold," the offbeat story telling and tempo shifts of "The Soapmakers," and the Chili Peppper-esque rap of "The Yeti," which catapult Clutch ahead of the retro-peddling masses and into the future of hard rock. Clutch: Neil Fallon (vocals); Tim Sult (guitar); Dan Maines (bass); Jean-Paul Gaster (drums). Personnel: Neil Fallon (vocals); Tim Sult (guitar); Jean-Paul Gaster (drums). Audio Mixers: Jack Joseph Puig; Jason Corsaro. Recording information: Electric Lady Studios, NY; Manhattan Center Studios, NY. Photographer: Dan Winters. On the surface, it may sound as if Clutch is mining the same vein as contemporary metal artists like Korn and Corrosion of Conformity, but with a solid set of grooves to keep their humorous material from becoming too hokey, they set themselves above most of their peers through dogged hard rocking and consistent songwriting prowess. Highlights on Transnational Speedway League include the entire first side, most notably "A Shogun Named Marcus" and "Binge and Purge." The latter song makes good fun of the ultra-macho posturings most modern metal bands are guilty of, while retaining the light/heavy contrast that has become a part of the genre. Although the material wanes in quality during the last half, Transnational Speedway League is still one of the brighter debuts to emerge in the '90s. ~ Jeremy Ulrey Recorded at Spa Studio, New York, April 1993; and Razor's Edge Studio, San Francisco, California, January 1993. Engineers: Jonathan Burnside, Steven Haigler. Clutch: Neil Fallon (vocals); Tim Sult (guitar); Dan Maines (bass); Jean Paul Gaster (drums). Producers: Jonathan Burnside, Steven Haigler.

This is a Hyper CD, which contains regular audio tracks and also provides a link to the artist's website with the help of a web browser. Clutch continue to consolidate their hard rock mixed with funk for their third full-length album, PURE ROCK FURY, this time co-opting former Mountain supremo Leslie West for both guitar and shared production duties. The Maryland quartet has a fine way with an acerbic, absurdist lyric, and at times, as in the Pink Floyd-quoting "Careful With That Mic," they score a direct hit; the aforementioned tune features a hilarious speed rap demolition of many of the acts currently featured on alternative rock radio. The production highlights the band's unimpeachable musical skills, while avoiding the usual pitfalls of sonic bombast. Clutch's sound lurks midway between metal and R&B, and though this might make them sound like the Red Hot Chili Peppers, vocalist Neil Fallon's lyrics alone place the band light years away from the California combo. Fallon's lyrics make sense in a stream of consciousness kind of way--they're actually fun to listen to, recalling a time before bands like Clutch found it necessary to lace their songs with angst to put across their worldview. Recorded at Uncle Punchy's, Silver Spring, Maryland and live at the 9:30 Club, Washington, D.C. in September, 2000. Clutch: Neil Fallon (vocals, guitar, organ); Tim Sult (guitar); Dan Maines (bass); Jean-Paul Gaster (drums). Producers: Uncle Punchy, Machine, Jason Corsaro, Leslie West. Sounding loose and more lively than their earlier major-label releases, Jam Room is Clutch at their down-home finest. Rarely will a band's sixth full-length disc manage to be this fresh and confident. From the opening moments of Jam Room's first crushing track, "Who Wants to Rock," these Maryland rockers send a clear message that the business at hand is getting down and having fun. There are a few dark exceptions to the good-time groove-mongering. Most notable among them is the alcoholic melodrama "Basket of Eggs" and the instrumental slugfest "Swamp Boot Upside Down." These moodier tracks generously allow listeners to catch some breath before getting slapped around by Clutch's open hand of stoner-influenced Southern rock. There's even a listenable drum solo leading into the bluesy romp "One Eye Dollar," which in itself is an accomplishment. Perhaps the greatest testimony to Clutch's commitment to wide open rock is that despite their straight-ahead, heavy-as-a-monster-truck leanings, the band is extremely hard to categorize. This is no small feat as there might be as many finely nuanced divisions of '90s alternative hard rock as there are practitioners. If fellow riff-centric Southerners Corrosion of Conformity joined forces with Ween, maybe then Clutch would have a single contemporary. Liberating and just plain fun, Jam Room neatly records Clutch's disdain for fashion and renegade spirit. ~ Vincent Jeffries Sounding loose and more lively than their earlier major-label releases, Jam Room is Clutch at their down-home finest. Includes the complete PITCHFORK 7" EP (1991) and rare bonus tracks. Pitchfork & Lost Needles includes Clutch's debut 7" in its four-song entirety and augments that with unreleased tracks and demo versions. As this set proves, the veteran quartet began as a band crouched between the Melvins, a viscous form of hardcore (think a slower, more economic Sick of It All), and the literate but still loud post-punk of Jawbox. "Wicker" is in blistering half-time, its layers of needling guitars and Neil Fallon's yawping proclamations ("Pacemaker! LIFE TAKER!") skinned to their barest, most powerful essence. "Arcadia" is three minutes of stocky thud, the sort of thing flannel-shirted bullies would blast from crappy boom boxes in the early '90s. The unreleased tracks are equally strong, from the low-slung grind of the perfectly named "Nero's Fiddle" to the relatively upbeat "Passive Restraints," a song tailor-made for pissing off parents or turfing lawns. "What Would a Wookie Do?" and "Bottoms Up, Socrates" date from the Robot Hive: Exodus sessions. As such they're more nuanced than Clutch's early work, but not by much. Fallon's vocals and lyrics take a higher position in the mix and an additional organ adds depth. But "Socrates" still finds a way to turn its breezy introduction into a righteous chorus anthem. The demos of "Bacchanal" and "Milk of Human Kindness" -- both songs dating from Transnational Speedway League -- aren't too different from their final versions besides being a bit more satisfyingly raw. Pitchfork & Lost Needles is a great pickup for both Clutch diehards and the uninitiated, since the populations of both groups are so large. Everyone can revel in it, then share the surgical thread when it's time for sewing ears back on. ~ Johnny Loftus Clutch: Dan Maines (bass instrument); Jean-Paul Gaster (drums, percussion); Neil Fallon, Tim Sult. Personnel: Neil Fallon (vocals, guitar, percussion); Mark Stanley, Tim Sult (guitar); Mick Schauer (electric piano, Clavinet
Heroes
David Bowie Heroes CD  (1977) Enhanced CD

CD $11.69  4.7 stars Audio Samples
The Germanic feel of this album is not surprising, as David Bowie recorded it in Berlin during his period of infatuation with the city. HEROES is a much more lively affair than LOW and has the benefit of a title track that remains one of Bowie's finest songs, in addition to excellent contributions from Robert Fripp and Brian Eno. The thick, mysterious textures of "Beauty and the Beast" set the tone for the rest of the album. The Eno-influenced "Sense of Doubt" is the flip side to the majestic "Heroes"--dark and moody, as is "Neukoln". But, despite (or perhaps because of) the charged atmosphere of doom and gloom, this is a seminal Bowie album. Composer: David Bowie. Lyricist: David Bowie. Personnel: David Bowie (vocals, guitar, koto, saxophone, keyboards, background vocals); David Bowie (various instruments); Brian Eno (vocals, guitar, piano, chamberlin, keyboards, synthesizer); George Murray (electric bass, bass guitar); Tony Visconti (wind, background vocals); Antonia Maass (background vocals); Robert Fripp, Carlos Alomar (guitar); Dennis Davis (drums, percussion). Audio Mixers: David Bowie; David Richards . Recording information: Hansa By The Wall, Berlin, Germany. Photographer: Sukita. In Pursuit Of Blackness/Black Is The Color
Joe Henderson In Pursuit Of Blackness/Black Is The Color CD  (1999)

CD $9.59  Audio Samples
Includes liner notes by Orrin Keepnews, Mitchell Feldman and Joe Henderson. Digitally remastered by Joe Tarantino (1998, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California). This two-albums-on-one-CD set captures the tenor master at an interesting juncture, both in his own artistic development and jazz in general. The collection draws from three recording sessions, spanning 1970-72. Henderson's music honestly reflected what was happening with the different factions shaping jazz in that era: the avant garde, the blossoming of fusion and the influence of the post-bop mainstream. He also synthesizes an awareness of jazz's African roots and the growing use of electric and electronic instruments and overdubbing (which most of the mainstream jazz audience of the time thought was heresy). The music on this album ranges from straight-ahead standards ("Invitation," with fine playing from Shaw) and driving, quirky hard bop ("A Shade of Jade") to free-form space-exploring soundscapes ("Current Events"). The playing from all the participants is uniformly fine, especially Cables and Henderson, whose tenor style draws influence from Sonny Rollins, Stan Getz and John Coltrane, but maintains its own sound. Highly recommended to any serious, open-minded jazz fan. Recorded at Decca Studios, New York, New York on May 12, 1971 and live at the Lighthouse Cafe, Hermosa Beach, California on September 25 & 26, 1970. Originally released on Milestone (9034). About the Album"Bachan Kaur's new CD "Soul Songs" can only be described as sent from heaven. Her voice sends you to a destination of peace, unconditional love & joy. The songs created a space for me to experience unity with infinite self and sent me into a state of deep gratitude. Her Cd helps me to remember my relationship to grace, divinity & devotion. It is truly a blessing and a gift that every spirit should hear." ~Sharon Tron/ Charanpal Kaur, Gibsons, British Columbia This album is a soul-filled blend of Gurmukhi Shabads (Devotional Sikh songs) English songs, and instrumentals. The melody and vibration of each song came to life while on her bicycle, walking in the forest or in meditation. She received so much joy and love from singing these sacred songs that she wanted to share them with the world. The songs were recorded with deep prayer and bliss in her bedroom. Each song is unique and provides the space for relaxation into the soul. The simplicity and rawness of the sound makes them all the more real, and increases their capacity to penetrate the heart. Musically her voice is supported by the Guitar as well as some tabla by a friend Harnarayan Singh and other electronic and organic sounds composed by the artist.

The album is entirely self- produced and the cds are packaged in 100% post-consumer recycled cardboard with no jewel case (but still colorful and beautiful!)Soul Songs is the start of what Bachan plans to be a lifetime of sacred sound offerings. It is a great compilation to use for yoga classes, meditation or for listening anytime or place to merge with the sweetness of the soul. About the ArtistBachan Kaur's musical history began when she was a young girl and would sing songs and stories for hours on the toilet or spinning in the backyard. She stopped singing over time like most of us as we move into the stages beyond our uninhibited youth. With time though, by the grace of God, something re-opened when she was in her teenage years. The creative spirit of song began to move again and at the age of 16 she started to learn the guitar and write and record songs. Around 18 she discovered the sacred technology of Kundalini Yoga and a few years later the path of Sikh Dharma. This path was like the vessel that her soul had been longing for, to deliver the sound current that flows within. As a self- taught musician, the gift in Bachan's music is her simplicity, purity and devotion.

Bachan Kaur has expressed deep gratitude for the chance to find the technology of sacred sound, "In my experience, sound which is the vibration of all creation, is the most powerful tool to bring together not only all aspects of ourselves, the heavens and the earth, but to bring together humanity beyond the illusion of being separate".

Bachan Kaur currently lives in Roberts Creek, Canada, with her husband Rama Singh. They both teach Kundalini Yoga and lead chanting with all faiths. She is a visionary artist ( huemanbeing ) having just completed her degree of Fine Arts at the university of British Columbia. She loves to be creative in all areas of life and loves to serve through musical recordings, live chanting and devotional song. It is one of her dreams to be part of the development of an Amazing Aquarian Gospel Choir one day, bringing people together in the Spirit of Oneness and healing. She looks forward to having a family and is pursuing her interest in Waldorf education.
