(3 Customer Reviews)
This career-spanning set includes Simply Red's two No. 1 hits, "If You Don't Know Me By Now" and "Holding Back The Years," along with lesser-known selections from the band's admirable catalog of soulful pop music.
Simply Red's songs are well-executed and emotive, with structures softly resting upon a foundation of jazz, reggae and soul. Mick Hucknell's rich, spirited vocals, reminiscent of Otis Redding, hold the pieces together. Over the years, Simply Red has had instrumental assistance from the likes of reggae tricksters Sly & Robbie and funkmeister Bootsy Collins. Such collaborations have led to easygoing songs held up by sharp musicianship. GREATEST HITS provides example after example of classic pop form.

In addition to the well-known singles, there are two new tracks added to the collection, including "Angel," a duet with the Fugees. Simply Red always worked better on singles than albums, making this single-disc compilation an excellent introduction. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

| | Kemistry CD (2003)
Greatest Hits music CDs
$11.49 Like a male Sade, or vintage Steely Dan without the irony, smooth R&B vocalist Kem weaves mellow, late-night musical tapestries over '70s-style jazz grooves. In the process, he manages to sound completely contemporary without so much as a single hip-hop beat or squiggly synth line. Kem's voice is an instrument of subtle grace and power, his vocal timbre and clipped phrasing owing an immediately obvious debt to Sam Cooke, but, interestingly, also occasionally recalling ...
| | Jaheim Still Ghetto CD (2002) Enhanced CD
Greatest Hits songs
$9.49 Though R&B pinup boy Jaheim's artistic focus is on life in the ghetto, he doesn't fall in line with the confrontational hip-hoppers who revel in the difficulties, violence, and harshness of urban life. Instead, as the album's title suggests, he focuses on the romance that blossoms even on the mean streets.
GHETTO LOVE roams smoothly from the sultry slow jam of "Looking for Love" to the '70s-style funk backing and forceful beat of "Let it Go" and the hip-hop-oriented "Li'l Nigga Ain't Mine," which revisits the theme examined in Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean." Jaheim is assisted on his debut album by some talented friends, including Castro, Miss Jones, and Terry Dexter, but it's his own way with a melody and knack for balancing street-cred hip-hop with heartfelt soul that are the most memorable elements on this disc.
As the title indicates, STILL GHETTO pretty much picks up where Jaheim left off with his previous album GHETTO LOVE. Once again we find the singer deftly mixing street-real themes and hip-hop production ...

| | Susan Christie Paint A Lady CD (1970)
Greatest Hits album
$11.59 The material on this album, heard by few until it was issued on CD in the early 21st century, might have been built up as a little weirder than it is by some of the collectors who've raved about it. While it's not the most uplifting stuff in the world, much of it is haunting but not all that out-there pop-folk. Susan Christie's fairly strong, strident vocals and moody melodies, occasionally embellished by strings, aren't the most uncommercial mixture that could have been concocted, though apparently they were too uncommercial to find release when they were originally recorded. What is unusual -- and what sets it most apart from some singers she might bear the vaguest of resemblance to at times, like Melanie, Tim Buckley, Sandy Denny, and Bobbie Gentry -- are the unexpectedly forceful distorted guitars, near-hard rock organ, and angular rhythms and mild dissonance used in some of the arrangements. In addition, for an eight-song, half-hour album, it's certainly unpredictable in the wide territory it covers -- "No One Can Hear You Cry," unlike anything else on the record, is close to sounding like a fine lost Dionne Warwick outtake, though ...
