"Fuel" was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance. "Better Than You" won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance.

When Metallica recorded 1996's LOAD, the studio sessions were fruitful enough for the band to put out two records. A year and a half later, RELOAD is the inevitable follow-up. Stretching beyond Metallica's speed metal roots, RELOAD is a continuation of the experimentation that dismayed many old fans and welcomed in many new ones. As a result, many Metallica firsts are reached on their eighth album. Some anomalies include recruiting the legendary Marianne Faithfull to contribute backing vocals on "The Memory Remains" and the addition of hurdy-gurdy and violin to the mix of the wistful "Low Man's Lyric." Throughout all this experimentation, Metallica still plays hard and fast, particularly on the metal groove of "Fuel" and the relentless pounding of "Where The Wild Things Are," (a title borrowed from children's author Maurice Sendak). Metallica continues to reinvent itself in a genre where mediocrity is always just around the corner.

Recorded at The Plant Studios, Sausilto, California between May 1995 and February 1996 and from July to October 1997.

Producers: Bob Rock, James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich.

Metallica: James Hetfield (vocals, guitar); Kirk Hammett (guitar); Jason Newsted (bass); Lars Ulrich (drums).

Additional personnel: Marianne Faithfull (vocals); Bernardo Begalli (violin); David Miles (hurdy-gurdy); Jim McGillveray (percussion).

Rolling Stone (12/11/97, pp.75-76) - 3 Stars (out of 5) - "...more influenced by bluesy rock & roll than by any '90s trend....strongly rooted in the group's apocalyptic metal sound....The biggest change is an increased emphasis on rhythm..."
Entertainment Weekly (11/21/97, p.136) - "...the boys are back in frown, gnarling their way through bristly thrashers and slithery ballads recorded during and after the LOAD sessions. RELOAD continues their journey into stripped-down maturity while toying with fresh melodic textures..."
- Rating: B
Musician (2/98, p.83) - "...greasy, driving, full of fat grooves, lyric and rhythmic hooks, and sonic curveballs....captures one of rock's greatest bands at its peak..."

4 stars Better Album Than People Say It Is
I have one thing to say to you "former" Metallica fans who strongly believe that the band has sold out: SHUT THE F**K UP! The only reason Load and Reload are considered Metallica's worst albums is because the rest (except for Kill 'Em All) are so great. Load is a decent album thats worth buying and Reload is pretty good too. Tis blows most albums out of the water anyway so shut up. There's one important thing you people need to realize: THIS ISN"T 1984 ANYMORE YOU DUMBA**ES! Thrash metal is dead. Are bands like Megadeath and Iron Maiden going platinum, selling out every show, and considered one of the best bands in the world? No. Thrash Metal is forever gone, and you idiots just half to get over it (but then again you fools are probably just concentrating on how many beers you can chugg before you vomit in that cheap, depressing bar you call a home). Ok, now to the album. Most of these tracks are good. The standouts are Fuel, The Memory Remains, The Unforgiven II, Carpe Diem Baby, and Fixxxer, in my opinion. It's worth buying and listening to. Again this album blows most others out of the water. And those who think that Hetfield isn't a good lead singer anymore and that he should retire, just shut up. He's still a good lead singer (and keep in mind he practically got blown up in a concert in Montreal). In closing, this album is a pretty good one, so buy it. And to those idiotic drunks and losers that I mentioned before? Kiss my fat white a**!

3 stars something old, something new
I really like this album, there are some really well written catchy songs on here. does this sound like the old metallica? no it doesent, but that doesen't mean that it is crap. I admit when metallica came out with load and reload, there wasn't as much agrresion in their music which I missed, But you can tell the band wanted to experiment a little bit. personally I think it worked. regardless of what anybody else says.

5 stars Great album!!!
This is personally my favorite Metallica album! Though it's not metal, it still rocks! I knew that if Metallica were a great metal band, they would surely be an awesome rock band! The first 5 songs ("Fuel", "The Memory Remains","Devil Dance", "The Unforgiven II" and "Better Than You") are the best! Five solid radio hits in a row! The rest of the album is great too!
