"Metropolis Part I," a track featured on Dream Theater's breakthrough, IMAGES AND WORDS, left many progressive rock enthusiasts with what seemed like another unfinished chapter in a story never to be completed. Seven years and five albums later, Dream Theater returned to its majestic beginnings with METROPOLIS PART II--SCENES FROM A MEMORY. Keyboard virtuoso Jordan Rudess, who was a logical replacement for Derek Sherinian, revitalized the band's sound. Rudess's collaboration with guitarist John Petrucci and drummer Mike Portnoy stole the attention of Dream Theater fans in the instrumental project, LIQUID TENSION EXPERIMENT.
METROPOLIS PART II is an epic concept album that makes a powerful artistic statement. The band is impressive in its ability to weave a suite of pieces together that share a common thread of recurring musical and lyrical themes similar to those first presented in "Metropolis I." The heart of the tale is revealed in "Fatal Tragedy," which centers on a murder mystery. The main character, Victoria Page, sees the man she once loved turning evil and in refusing his affections, she pays with her life. The lyrical point of view shifts from character to character, bringing about powerful results.

CMJ (11/8/99, p.25) - "...pushes the metal envelope...a pretty, orchestral prog-rock album that has so many intricate layers that you're guaranteed to uncover something new with every listen..."
Simply fantastic. Best DT album. Bought this CD a few months ago and it completely blowed me away. I`ve got nearly thousand CD`s in my collection, this is one of the best I`ve ever heard, perhaps the best. It just get`s better each time I listen to it. If I were to be stranded at an island for 10 years with just 1 CD, I would pick this one. Best prog rock out there, no doubt, but you dont have to be a prog rock fan to enjoy this album, any fan of good music will love it. So much quality in his album. If you dont have this CD in your collection: BUY IT NOW!! You will not be disappointed! Submitted by sigve (Norway) Was This Review Helpful? YesNo 5 of 5 found this helpful.
jr joins the band ... believe this is first cd with jr in the band ... I've enjoyed all the previous dt cd's. However, it appears they are now taking on a concept album approach ... songs are more intricate & longer. jr is one of the best keyboardists on the planet & a very welcome addition to dt. can't stop listening ... no other music out there comes close ... On my second copy Somehow lost my original copy and I have no idea how. It's practically the only thing I've listened to for a month straight (with the exception of another Dream Theater disc). Amazing musicianship. Somewhat of a Metallica sound with artistic blurbs of Zappa, Queen, and many others layered into a continuous storyline. We called them concept albums in the old days (Genesis "The Lamb", Who "Tommy", Floyd "The Wall" etc...) Yet also allows to breath with a soft ballad section. It covers all the bases. Best Album ever I'm not a Dream Theater fan so I'm not suspicious... :)
"The Spirit Carries On" was my first experience with this master piece. It was given to me when a friend of mine as died and I'd love it. Some years after, I finally bought the album (even knowing DT's style was not my gender) and I became totally surprise.
When you start listen to it you can stop (and I think this album should be listen from 1 to 12 "non stop")... This album goes on in a theater piece with two acts. Amazing going of songs that don't gives you any ideia of stop/start from music to music, making of it an "non stop cd".
The Wall (Pink Floyd) were my very best album ever... until I heard Metropolis Pt.2 - Scenes From a Memory!
Buying it, you wont regret! Submitted by tcpor (Porto, Portugal) Was This Review Helpful? YesNo 1 of 2 found this helpful.
