MY FAVORITE THINGS is a landmark album in jazz history. On the previous year's GIANT STEPS, Coltrane had established his credentials as a bebop master, composer and group leader. By 1960, he was ready to move on. On MY FAVORITE THINGS, Coltrane is in transition, searching for another level to which to raise his music. A new group featuring McCoy Tyner on piano, Steve Davis on bass and Elvin Jones on drums supports Coltrane on this experiment in non-Western harmonics and controlled dissonance.
Unlike some of Coltrane's later recordings, MY FAVORITE THINGS contains plenty of melodic elements, enough to please audiences mystified by free jazz. MY FAVORITE THINGS sounds most like a typical 1950s jazz album on the Cole Porter ballad "Everytime We Say Goodbye," which Coltrane and company treat sweetly and lovingly. On the other three cuts--the title track and two Gershwin compositions, "Summertime" and "But Not For Me"--the ensemble picks up the tempo and infuses the tunes with a passionate frenzy. The band is brilliant throughout, Tyner providing particularly stellar support with both his rhythmic chord comping and melodic soloing. MY FAVORITE THINGS belongs in any jazz fan's record collection.

This CD is a compilation of early Miles Davis tracks and is NOT the Columbia album called MILESTONES released in 1958.
The title does not refer to the trumpeter's composition from his first recording date but is an acknowledgement of this session's visceral impact. Tenor saxophonist John Coltrane had left the trumpeter in the spring of 1957 to join Thelonious Monk for his engagement at New York's Five Spot, and was replaced by a rising star on alto saxophone, Julian "Cannonball" Adderley. When he returned, Davis had a formidable three-horn front line to go with "The Rhythm Section."
MILESTONES is a bracing rhythmic tonic, coming after the refined ballad moods and lush orchestral pastels of MILES AHEAD. And from the furious, adults-only hyper-drive of the opening "Dr. Jekyll" (with its thrilling tenor/alto battle and daredevil drum breaks), through a dazzling Dizzy Gillespie/John Lewis bebop anthem ("Two Bass Hit") to the bright dancing groove of "Straight, No Chaser," MILESTONES is an epic historical event--even by Miles' standards.

As early as 1954, Miles reacted to the escalating chordal complexity of hard bop by fashioning an evocative blues based on a simple scalar pattern ("Swing Spring"). John Coltrane's maiden voyage for Atlantic Records was the fulfillment of all the potential he'd demonstrated with Miles, Monk and on his own Prestige recordings. As the both the name and title of this release indicate, Soft Mountain were intimately connected with Soft Machine, albeit long after the latter group had dissolved in the '70s. In August 2003, ex-Soft Machiners Elton Dean and Hugh Hopper teamed up with two Japanese musicians, keyboardist Hoppy Kamiyama and drummer Tatsuya Yoshida, to record the hour of improvised fusion that comprises this album. And it certainly is improvisation; there's just one "song" here, "Soft Mountain Suite," divided into two parts of roughly half-an-hour length each. Though improvised in the studio, the music itself won't be too surprising to longtime Soft Machine followers, being energetic, instrumental jazz-rock fusion that's more jazz than rock, blending a frenetic rhythm section with free jazz sax and electric keyboard textures. Things do get especially wild halfway through the second part of the suite, with some careening electronic effects (presumably created by the keyboardist) and wild blowing by Dean, who died just a couple years or so after this session. It's more an extension of what Soft Machine were known for than a radical departure, though as Hopper notes in his brief liner note, he and Dean welcomed the chance to be spontaneous as the group ...
