The 1967 debut album by New York quartet Vanilla Fudge may not have remained in the pantheon of all-time greatest '60s rock albums, but it's of huge historical importance. With its unprecedented combination of psychedelia (itself still a new commodity), hard rock, soul, and classical motifs, it prefigured everything from heavy metal to prog rock. The band's modus operandi was to take pop, rock, and R&B hits of the era and extend them to the breaking point, adding raga-like guitar lines, overdriven Hammond organ, screaming feedback, gargantuan distorted riffs, mountainous drumbeats, and impassioned vocals. Most often the original tempo of the song was slowed down drastically for maximum dramatic effect. In this manner, everything from Motown hit "You Keep Me Hangin' On" to the Zombies' "She's Not There" becomes a haunting, pathos-filled set piece alternately haunting and driving. Somewhere in England, the young men who would become known as Yes, Deep Purple, and numerous other bands, were listening with rapt attention.

"You keep me hanging on" is worth the price of the whole cd. Classic late 60´s rock that grooves like mad. The rest of the album is almost as great. A must buy if you´re into heavy rock.......

Symphonic, psychedelic, hard, pop, rock'n'roll, rhythm&blues... an extraordinary mixture of sounds, and one of the top album of the psychedelic era. They were symphonic and hard rock pioneer, and this album is recognized as an essential in any good music collection. Don't miss it.

The Pigeons played in NY City beginning their R&B music careers.
Moving on to summer in Newport, RI during late 60's performing at the Bastille on Bellevue Avenue and Rotunda Easton(1st)Beach, changed their stage name to Vanilla Fudge.

This 1997 reissue of ARE YOU EXPERIENCED? is a remastered version that restores the original LP's track order and album artwork. ARE YOU EXPERIENCED? was previously reissued in 1993 (MCA 10893) with new cover art and a new 17-track running order that included all the songs on either the U.S. or U.K. versions of the original LP. That version is now out of print, and has been replaced by this one, on the Experience Hendrix label, which features remastered versions of the same 17 songs, this time in the order they appeared on the original American LP, with the extra tracks added to the end (a separate version was simultaneously released in the U.K., featuring the same songs but in the original British track order). The Experience Hendrix label is controlled by Hendrix's family.

What made Vanilla Fudge so intriguing was how they and producer Shadow Morton mutated hit songs by stretching the tempo to slow motion so exquisite that even an overexposed song by the Supremes sounded new on the radio. The formula worked fine on covers, but despite their collective talent, the material they composed on Renaissance feels more like psychedelic meeting progressive and has less of that commercial magic. Renaissance is a concept album, produced and directed by Shadow Morton, the man who brought you the Shangri-Las and who produced the second album for the New York Dolls. Celebrating the unbridled love of marijuana that many hip-hop artists promote, THC: The Hip Hop Collection, Vol. 1 is a tribute album to the drug. There are no notable differences among the tracks found here outside of the beats and samples; otherwise, each song essentially says the same thing -- weed is good. This message may have worked for four or five songs, but to dedicate an entire album to this idea without exploring the legal aspects or even tell some stories about being high seems rather ridiculous. The good tracks here are distinguished by the skills of the rappers and producers, as well as how they approach the singular message found here. Shabaam Sahdeeq and Steele deliver the most memorable track on the first half of the album, but their piano-driven "Roll Up" is really the only exceptional track out of the first ...
