Ever since Genesis was reduced down to the trio of Phil Collins, Tony Banks, and Mike Rutherford, the former prog-rock giants had made a concerted effort to streamline their music into more bite-sized pop portions. GENESIS was an important bridge ... Full Descriptionto this goal. Coupled with frontman/drummer Collins' burgeoning solo career and the emergence of MTV, the band soon gained a higher profile in the eyes of the record buying public. Genesis' prosperity, along with the solo success of individual members (particularly Collins) meant that GENESIS became part of a decade-long cycle in which band album releases alternated with those by Phil Collins.
Driven by Banks' simple keyboard lines, "That's All" became the album's first hit and first of three videos shot for MTV. The other two, the ominous "Mama" and the humorous "Illegal Alien" both helped bolster the band's pop visibility. Although the Jan Hammer-flavored "Just a Job to Do" wasn't made into a video, this hard-driving song was later incorporated into an episode of the television program Miami Vice. Despite the obvious stylistic changes, art-rock elements still popped up particularly in "Home By the Sea" and the sequel, "Second Home By the Sea."
Recorded at The Farm, Surrey, England in 1983.
Genesis: Mike Rutherford (vocals, guitar, bass); Tony Banks (vocals, keyboards); Phil Collins (vocals, drums, percussion).
Mojo (Publisher) (3/01, p.82) - "...Entirely unrecognizable from Gabriel-era Genesis, the lead single 'Mama' is based around the bleakly distorted drum machine....Further chart success comes courtesy of 'That's All' and 'Illegal Alien'..." When guitarist Steve Hackett left Genesis for a solo career after touring behind 1977's WIND AND WUTHERING, he was the second major defection the group had suffered in as many years. Instead of helplessly disintegrating, the remaining trio circled the wagons and bounced back with the solid AND THEN THERE WERE THREE.
Rather than employ any outside studio musicians to take up the slack, Tony Banks, Phil Collins, and Mike Rutherford instead played every instrument themselves. Resolutely reflective throughout, this 1978 release finds Genesis populating its songs with a broad range of characters. Among the more memorable ones are the fast-talking record exec on "Down and Out" (a song that could be construed as a veiled swipe at the departed Hackett) and the larger-than-life cattle-driving cowpuncher on the synth-soaked "Ballad of Big." Although the songs on this record are more concise than Genesis' earlier, conceptual work, the band still retains the gift of capturing moods. The breathtaking "Snowbound" perfectly encompasses the feeling of stepping outside into a freshly minted snowfall. An air of yearning runs through "Follow You Follow Me," a romantic yarn that also became Genesis' first American Top 30 hit.
Recorded at Relight Studios, Hilvarenbeek, Holland.

Genesis CD music
$9.09 Digitally remastered by Nick Davis, Geoff Callingham & Chris Blair.
Genesis still have a credibility problem which at present just trails the present standing of ex-drummer/vocalist Philip Collins. Duke was the record that shed their 'heavy prog' image and found them beginning to loosen up. Collins had grown in confidence following Peter Gabriel's departure and the band immediately became much tighter musically. In addition to the hit singles "Duchess," the buoyant "Turn It On Again" and realism of a situation in "Misunderstanding," there is the painful honesty of "Please Don't Ask." There have been many bigger Genesis albums, but none have anywhere near as much heart.

Each re-issue comes in a specially designed mini-box which includes the jewel CD box plus a 24 page color booklet featuring new liner notes, photographs, and the complete original album artwork.
At the dawn of the '80s, many '70s prog-rockers (Yes, Rush, etc.) trimmed away the musical fat in an attempt to keep current. Genesis's sonic reduction was an unprecedented aesthetic and commercial success. Though traditionalists cried foul, ABACAB was in fact more inventive and memorable than its comparatively leaden predecessor DUKE.
The R&B rhythms and punchy Earth, Wind & Fire horns on "No Reply At All" foreshadow Phil Collins's more commercial solo career, but the track breathes with an undeniable vitality. The symphonic grandeur of old is gone, replaced by a sparser, more rhythm-oriented style. In this manner, each individual part of the arrangements receives greater focus and import. As always, there are some agreeably unusual song subjects, such as the alien abduction of "Keep It Dark." "Whodunnit" sounds more like Devo than like Gentle Giant, but the skewed melodic sensibility is a link to Genesis's Gabriel-era glory days. Utilizing simpler melodies and more syncopated rhythms ("Me and Sarah Jane" even sports a reggae feel), ABACAB simultaneously simplifies and expands the Genesis sound.

| | Ozzy Osbourne Ozzmosis CD (1995) Remastered
Genesis songs
$9.25 Let us all be thankful that Ozzy's retirement didn't stick. It supposedly lasted for three days, after which he got bored and started working on this project. Heavy, riff-intensive tunes, progressive song structures and a little psychedelia give OZZMOSIS a definite Sabbath flavor. Ozzy must have been in touch with whatever inspired early classics like PARANOID and MASTERS OF REALITY. Witness the extremely chunky "Thunder Underground," which can stand up next to "Sweet Leaf" and "Symptom Of The Universe" as an archetype of hard rock. The trippy guitar in "Ghost Behind My Eyes" and "Denial" are not some young Ozzy-wannabe going for a retro sound--this man was there, "Planet Caravan"ing.
Still, this heavy metal daddy in touch with his roots is also hip to the genre's latest sound. OZZMOSIS has a live, up-front feeling, thanks to producer Michael Beinhorn (Red Hot Chili Peppers, Soundgarden). Zakk Wylde's huge, raw guitar also plays a major role. He provides scorching solos, lush textures and juicy fills with a muscular tone and minimal effects--the perfect complements to Osbourne's songwriting.
But more important than the raging guitars and the big sound is attitude. Ozzy's spunk has indeed rejected retirement. His songs still spew biting commentary at whoever will listen. "Your bulls**t culture licking can't stop the deathwatch ticking/You're only mortal after all," he warns on "Thunder Underground." Ozzy himself may not be immortal, but OZZMOSIS sounds like it is.

| | Ozzy Osbourne Ozzman Cometh CD (1997)
Genesis album
$9.39 THE OZZMAN COMETH is a single CD collection of hits, previously unavailable recordings and one new track. Previously included a limited edition second disc containing 2 of the 4 previously unavailable recordings as well as an interview with Ozzy Osbourne.
As if we needed another reason to believe that Ozzy Osbourne is God, along comes THE OZZMAN COMETH, a double CD retrospective of one of the most enduring and influential figures in heavy metal. Consisting mostly of his post-Black Sabbath solo work as well as a live version of "Paranoid," this collection's biggest asset is the so-called "basement tapes," never-before-heard rehearsal tapes of four classic Sabbath songs. Dating back to 1970, "Black Sabbath" and "War Pigs" are the songs that transformed a petty thief from Birmingham, England into the godfather of heavy metal.
But if Sabbath cemented his place in the rock 'n' roll canon, his solo work raised him to legendary status. Working with former Quiet Riot guitarist Randy Rhoads, Osbourne set the tone for the 80's metal revival with songs like "Crazy Train" and "Mr. Crowley." Capping off the collection is a seventeen minute interview with Ozzy from 1988, where he speaks frankly about the ups and downs in his career (parents be forewarned: this is not for the faint of heart). Ozzy has made it through all the pitfalls of a life in rock and roll and has come out on the other side redeemed and renewed.
Recorded between 1970 & 1995.

| | Tranquility Bass Let The Freak Flag Fly CD (1997)
Genesis album
$12.75 Mike Kandel's self-described "Insatiably Eclectic Hippy Freeform Freakout Band" can be summed up as '90s gear--'60s attitude. Few electronic producers have been so successful in capturing Summer of Love vibes without the obligatory latter-day aftertaste of cynicism. LET THE FREAK FLAG FLY, saturated with unabashed peace, love, understanding, and the distinct floral bouquet of patchouli, waves Tranquility Bass's freak flag proudly.
FREAK FLAG is grounded soundly in beat-oriented electronica, but Kandel's production bag overflows with unorthodox tricks. Vocals and guitars are plentiful--acoustic, for that authentic campfire-folkie feel on "Soldier's Sweet Heart" (Gene Autry does the protest thing) and the fiddle-streaked "Lichen Me to Wyomin'" (Gene Autry does Gene Autry--with a sampler); electric, for the MAGGOT BRAIN-ed psycho-delic chops that accent "5 Miles High" and the 'tude-heavy "Never Gonna End." Kandel's style-hopping pop accents range from horn-toasted Cal-Mex Latinisms, retro-funked-up Haight-Ashbury strut, and the epic British prog-edelia of the title track to the delightful "La La La" (Joni Mitchell sings pygmy love-songs of Nairobi?) And the lyrics on the super-freaky "The Bird" could have been lifted from a Heaven's Gate hymnal. If you prefer your BPM with a reassuringly human spin, Tranquility Bass could be just the trip.
Engineers include: Tom Carlisle, Critter, Jamie Duffy.
Tranquility Bass: Michael Kandel (vocals, acoustic & ekectric guitars, harpsichord, piano, Fender Rhodes & Wurlitzer pianos, Clavinet, acoustic & electric basses, programming).
Additional personnel: Tom Brainard (spoken vocals); Tom Schmitz (guitar); Xion Cooper (fiddle); Brian Rapp (trumpet); J. Paul Redman (trombone); Phil Western (drums, bongos, agogo, tumba); Matt Fusello (talking drum, finger cymbals, congas, shaker).

Genesis Music Review Average Rating: (3.4 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Great Genesis CD They did some weird stuff like Mama on this one where Phil Collins starts retching in the middle of the tune but it's actually a great piece of musical expression and I kid you not, kind of like John Lennon's primal therapy scream in his song "Mother" , maybe that's where Phil got the inspiration. The Home by the sea songs are longer prog rock kind of a bit like what you used to expect from earlier Genesis perhaps from the Trick of the Tale era but with a little trip to Malibu or England's southern coast when you're wealthy enough to own a little spot there. The rest of the songs are incredibly tuneful pop rock that is extremely enjoyable including Illegal Alien which really makes you feel like you're in the shoes of the desperate immigrant and you turn to listening to Genesis to get through the night. It took me about 6 listenings, a grower, then I loved the CD forever. Submitted by Andrew M. (Santa Rosa, CA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 12 of 14 found this helpful.
Perfection!!!!1 Walter's review was nearly perfect...
"Every song on this album is great. You'll love it! Oh btw, please ignore the user from CA... This person seems to have nothing else better to do in life, but to sit around and type negative, pointless reviews, using random, multiple names to lower the rating of this album. I've seen this same person do the same thing to other Genesis albums, when Phil Collins was the frontman. It seems to me that this certain person is jealous and pissed off, because Phil Collins made Genesis a better and more successful band." Submitted by **** the poser from CA! Mama Silver Rainbow When I listen to this album I re-live the concert. They way these three guys perform is amazing, along with the talents of Daryl Steurmer, Chester Thomson. The drum duet with Phil and Chester was just amazing. I enjoyed this album very much. Eight out of the nine songs, Illegal Alien just didn't do it for me.
