Ever since Genesis was reduced down to the trio of Phil Collins, Tony Banks, and Mike Rutherford, the former prog-rock giants had made a concerted effort to streamline their music into more bite-sized pop portions. GENESIS was an important bridge to this goal. Coupled with frontman/drummer Collins' burgeoning solo career and the emergence of MTV, the band soon gained a higher profile in the eyes of the record buying public. Genesis' prosperity, along with the solo success of individual members (particularly Collins) meant that GENESIS became part of a decade-long cycle in which band album releases alternated with those by Phil Collins.
Driven by Banks' simple keyboard lines, "That's All" became the album's first hit and first of three videos shot for MTV. The other two, the ominous "Mama" and the humorous "Illegal Alien" both helped bolster the band's pop visibility. Although the Jan Hammer-flavored "Just a Job to Do" wasn't made into a video, this hard-driving song was later incorporated into an episode of the television program Miami Vice. Despite the obvious stylistic changes, art-rock elements still popped up particularly in "Home By the Sea" and the sequel, "Second Home By the Sea."
Recorded at The Farm, Surrey, England in 1983.
Genesis: Mike Rutherford (vocals, guitar, bass); Tony Banks (vocals, keyboards); Phil Collins (vocals, drums, percussion).
Mojo (Publisher) (3/01, p.82) - "...Entirely unrecognizable from Gabriel-era Genesis, the lead single 'Mama' is based around the bleakly distorted drum machine....Further chart success comes courtesy of 'That's All' and 'Illegal Alien'..." Record Collector (magazine) (pp.83-84) - "4 stars out of 5 -- "1983's eponymous effort boasts classic pop-rock such as the opening 'Mama' and 'Just A Job To Do'..."
Perfection is right! \"Every song on this album is great. You\'ll love it! Oh btw, please ignore the user from CA... This person seems to have nothing else better to do in life, but to sit around and type negative, pointless reviews, using random, multiple names to lower the rating of this album. I\'ve seen this same person do the same thing to other Genesis albums, when Phil Collins was the frontman. It seems to me that this certain person is jealous and pissed off, because Phil Collins made Genesis a better and more successful band.\"

IT'S EASY... To be hard on Genesis, no matter what album we are talking about. Every album since FGTR has problems, and every album since FGTR has moments of beauty. Genesis has always experimented with the limits of pop music, being fans of Zombies, Beatles... In the early 70's, that meant longer, more symphonic forms. In the 80's it meant leaner, edgier forms. It's great that so many people viciously appreciate Gabriel and Hackett's contributions to the Genesis mix, but, gee, who are these Banks, Rutherford, and Collins guys, and, hmm, what part did they have in making, say, Lamb? One star for this very 80's album is dishonest. I'd say between 2-4 stars is an honest reaction to this work. As a complete Genesis fan, I give it four stars. As with most of their albums, I have owned this work on LP, cassette, and CD and will be purchising the box with the 5.1 remaster very soon. My four stars says 'up yours' to your one star reviews. On the other hand, I really do understand... Synthesizers smell funny. And Illegal Alien is an intriguing concept for the Boys from Charterhouse. And I never listen to Mama or Taking It All Too Hard or That's All, but, for me, to not listen to half of a Genesis LP is about par, all the way from Revelation, to Genesis and beyond. Waiting for Genesis to make another Foxtrot is like waiting for XTC to tour... or to expect Beefheart to put the monkey back on his knee... It's not technically impossible, but eventually we must move on. Submitted by Dents (Springfield, MA) Was This Review Helpful? YesNo 12 of 16 found this helpful.

The only thing Peter Gabriel did better than Phil Collins was drugs. Drugs get you no where! Submitted by Walter (Old Town, ME, USA) Was This Review Helpful? YesNo 12 of 16 found this helpful.
I agree with Eric from Milwaukee, WI "....than that stuff in the 70s with Peter Gabriel. Thank you Phil, Mike, & Tony for finally making music that makes sense."
It's just that simple. :) Submitted by James Henderson (Dover, DE, USA) Was This Review Helpful? YesNo 12 of 16 found this helpful.
