Ever since Genesis was reduced down to the trio of Phil Collins, Tony Banks, and Mike Rutherford, the former prog-rock giants had made a concerted effort to streamline their music into more bite-sized pop portions. GENESIS was an important bridge to this goal. Coupled with frontman/drummer Collins' burgeoning solo career and the emergence of MTV, the band soon gained a higher profile in the eyes of the record buying public. Genesis' prosperity, along with the solo success of individual members (particularly Collins) meant that GENESIS became part of a decade-long cycle in which band album releases alternated with those by Phil Collins.
Driven by Banks' simple keyboard lines, "That's All" became the album's first hit and first of three videos shot for MTV. The other two, the ominous "Mama" and the humorous "Illegal Alien" both helped bolster the band's pop visibility. Although the Jan Hammer-flavored "Just a Job to Do" wasn't made into a video, this hard-driving song was later incorporated into an episode of the television program Miami Vice. Despite the obvious stylistic changes, art-rock elements still popped up particularly in "Home By the Sea" and the sequel, "Second Home By the Sea."
Recorded at The Farm, Surrey, England in 1983.
Genesis: Mike Rutherford (vocals, guitar, bass); Tony Banks (vocals, keyboards); Phil Collins (vocals, drums, percussion).
Mojo (Publisher) (3/01, p.82) - "...Entirely unrecognizable from Gabriel-era Genesis, the lead single 'Mama' is based around the bleakly distorted drum machine....Further chart success comes courtesy of 'That's All' and 'Illegal Alien'..." Record Collector (magazine) (pp.83-84) - "4 stars out of 5 -- "1983's eponymous effort boasts classic pop-rock such as the opening 'Mama' and 'Just A Job To Do'..." | Genesis Music Review Average Rating: (3.4 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Perfection!!!!1 Walter's review was nearly perfect...
"Every song on this album is great. You'll love it! Oh btw, please ignore the user from CA... This person seems to have nothing else better to do in life, but to sit around and type negative, pointless reviews, using random, multiple names to lower the rating of this album. I've seen this same person do the same thing to other Genesis albums, when Phil Collins was the frontman. It seems to me that this certain person is jealous and pissed off, because Phil Collins made Genesis a better and more successful band." Submitted by **** the poser from CA! I agree with Eric from Milwaukee, WI "....than that stuff in the 70s with Peter Gabriel. Thank you Phil, Mike, & Tony for finally making music that makes sense."
It's just that simple. :) Submitted by James Henderson (Dover, DE, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 12 of 15 found this helpful.
Mama Silver Rainbow When I listen to this album I re-live the concert. They way these three guys perform is amazing, along with the talents of Daryl Steurmer, Chester Thomson. The drum duet with Phil and Chester was just amazing. I enjoyed this album very much. Eight out of the nine songs, Illegal Alien just didn't do it for me. You Know..... I think that it is funny that people don't consider Genesis a "real band" once Peter Gabriel left, and that their music is crap. Hello!!! It's not the band's fault that Peter Gabriel has an over-blown ego! They did the best with what they had, and espically the fact that they became a trio, how can you complain. What kind of music have you ever written?! Yeah, that's right, you got no room to talk until you become a musician-LIKE ME!!! I have been in the music world for 35 years, and I fail to see any fault with their works.....so maybe ya'll shouldn't judge them too harshly....when you can write a good song, then I'll respect your opinion, but until then, button your lips! Genesis
$17.57 Of the "big four" original thrash bands (the other three being Metallica, Anthrax, and Megadeth), Slayer was the least compromising and most consistent. As such, 2009's WORLD PAINTED BLOOD recalled more than the title of Slayer's 1986 masterpiece REIGN IN BLOOD; it shared the earlier album's ferocious aggression and trademark speed metal-meets-hardcore sound. Throughout, the sound is lean and mean, with bassist/vocalist Tom Araya's vocals mixed relatively dry and upfront, giving the album a bracing, fist-to-the-face force. Jackhammer tracks such as "Hate Worldwide" and "Psychopathy Red" are short, no muss-no fuss blasts of double kick drum, minor key-riffing fury, with an unrelenting intensity that requires little in the way of sonic or textural variation. The title track, on the other hand, is a somewhat slower dose of classic chugga-chugga head-banging which showcases Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman's shrieking, emotive guitar work. Remaining true to Slayer's defiantly old school sound, WORLD PAINTED BLOOD carried the torch for pure thrash.

| | Black Eyed Peas E.N.D. (The Energy Never Dies) CD (2009)
Genesis
$12.59 Black Eyed Peas, the hip-hop crossover juggernaut that propelled singer Fergie and producer Will.I.Am to superstardom, have, since 2003's ELEPHUNK, been audaciously plugging away at their bombastic but lighthearted style of rap-cum-dance pop--an effort that has translated to a run of successful chart-topping singles including "My Humps," "Pump It," and "Don't Phunk with My Heart." Eager to follow up on the platinum-selling success of 2005's MONKEY BUSINESS, Black Eyed Peas have returned with THE E.N.D. (an acronym for "Energy Never Dies"), their third studio effort. Combining Will.I.Am's thumping 808 kick drum-infused beats with production assistance from a host of collaborators (including vocoder-loving Torontoians MSTRKRFT and French house veteran David Guetta), BEP's infectious party-time rhymes are an easy match for the album's Ed Banger-style of electro rapping and Auto Tune jamming, especially on lead-off single and sure-fire 2009 summer anthem "Boom Boom Pow."

| | Hatebreed CD (2009)
Genesis
$14.19 A mere four months after the release of a covers album, FOR THE LIONS, New Haven's Hatebreed offers their first truly new album in three years. This self-titled offering, the band's fifth, is the first outing to feature both new guitarists--Frank Novinec, who joined in 2006, and newcomer Wayne Lozinak. In addition, drummer Matt Byrne replaced original skin man Rigg Ross, making vocalist Jamey Jasta and bassist Chris Beattie the only two remaining founding members. Despite the lineup shift, the sound is crafted around almost exactly the same formula that has made the band such a sought-after attraction on the metalcore circuit. In the summer of 2009, they shared stages all over the world with Slipknot, Slayer, and Korn, as well as having preferred lineup spots in many music festivals. With this CD, faster, downtuned hardcore is melded to slower, more decidedly doom-laden death metal moments--check the surprisingly retro but utterly killer instrumental "Undiminished"--all played with extreme technical flare, stop-and-start cadences and call-and-response choruses. The rest of these 15 tracks range from headbanging anthems such as the opener, "Become the Fuse," to Hatebreed's trademark, bone-cracking heaviness in "Everyone Bleeds Now," and pummeling riff-laden hardcore in "Merciless Tide." As a bonus, there is an edit of "Escape" tacked on at the end of the set.

Personnel: Jamey Jasta (vocals); Frank Novinec (guitar); Matt Byrne (drums).

| | Very Best Of Otis Redding CD (1992)
Genesis
$8.55 It is impossible to overrate Otis Redding. This Rhino compilation, while in no way comprehensive, is nonetheless an outstanding sampler of songs by one of soul music's all-time titans. There's not a dud among these 16 songs, and some, like "These Arms Of Mine," "(Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay," and "Try A Little Tenderness," rank among the greatest pop songs ever recorded.
Redding's performances are mesmerizing and seem to embody the perfect balance between acute sensitivity and sheer overwhelming emotional strength. The combination of Redding's magnetism and the quality of such songs as "Mr. Pitiful," "I Can't Turn You Loose," and "Respect" is almost too good to be true. The album's only shortcoming is that there aren't more tracks to savor. A perfect introduction to this phenomenal singer.
