| | I'm Your Fan: The Songs Of Leonard Cohen By... CD (1 Customer Review)
Leonard Cohen's supremely literate songs will always have a rapt audience among rock and folk's illuminati. In certain circles, Cohen is regarded with the same awe as Bob Dylan, Townes Van Zandt, and a handful of other top '60s songwriters. However, the singer's dry, husky voice and his dirge-like, hypnotic vocal delivery have often confounded even the bravest listener.
I'M YOUR FAN--the title is a reference to Cohen's landmark I'M YOUR MAN release of 1988--recruits an interesting, even inspired array of some of rock and pop's most uncompromising talents, presenting Leonard Cohen songs as unabashed pop. REM perform a gritty version of "First We Take Manhattan," while, Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds, a band clearly influenced by Cohen along the way, present an inspired version of "Tower of Song." Other standout selections include Lloyd Cole's beautiful take on "Chelsea Hotel," James' cover of "So Long Marianne," and Ian McCulloch's "Hey, That's No Way to Say Goodbye." | | Rise Against Unraveling CD (2001) Bonus Tracks; Reissue; Remastered; Remix
I'm Your Fan: The Songs Of Leonard Cohen By... album
$8.65 Rise Against's The Unraveling seems to be a bit of a change for Fat Wreck Chords. Oh, it's still punk (surprisingly, it was recorded by Mass Giorgini), it's just a lot more aggressive and not nearly as cheesy as many of the label's acts. This album is not poppy, and there's no juvenile humor; Rise Against is a pretty tough band and The Unraveling shows that aspect. The vocals have a good deal of melody and range, yet can break into screaming at any moment, as many of the tracks show. Songs like "Everchanging" show the possibilities that the Chicago quartet is capable of. The lyrics are mature and thoughtful, dealing with friendships and relationships, religion and memories. Similar comparisons could be made to Whippersnapper and Grey Area, yet there are certain ways The Unraveling stands out on its own, primarily in its use of melody in the vocals. While Whippersnapper's vocals are more metal and Grey Area's punk, Rise Against is melodic hardcore. Showing that they're not too far from their roots in 88 Fingers Louie, the punk energy is pure and unadulterated here. If there were ever an album to help bring back the finger pointing and circle pits, The Unraveling might be a good bet. ~ Kurt Morris

| | Gus Black Uncivilized Love CD (2003) DualDisc
I'm Your Fan: The Songs Of Leonard Cohen By... CD music
$13.09 Gus Black comes out of that fertile Los Angeles breeding ground that has spawn such eclectic singer/songwriters as Beck, E, and Grant Lee Phillips. Like those artists, Black enjoys dressing up the "guy-with-an-acoustic-guitar" conventions with interesting studio touches. Although this disc's production is thick with textures, it never proves distracting, and Black's strong melodic sense is allowed to shine through. He immediately grabs the listener's ear with the infectious, trip-folky opening cut, "Cadillac Tears," and follows it up with the terrific orchestral pop of "Dry Tears." His restrained but soulful crooning helps to make "When You Go" and the slinky "12345" soar. It is "City Life," however, that stands as the disc's centerpiece number. A rousing version of the tune serves as the record's most rocking effort and it is reprised, in a gentle acoustic arrangement, as the "title track" to close the album. Lyrically it combines the melancholic romanticism and social commentary that Black addresses throughout Uncivilized Love. The disc's primarily dark mood continues on the sole cover, the old Black Sabbath classic "Paranoid," reworked here into a brooding folk tune. Black does display a more hopeful and lighter side, particularly later on ...
