(1 Customer Review)
With HAPPY HOUR, King Missile, the quirky lo-fi pop group centered around the rambling poetics and polemics of John S. Hall, moved up to the majors the only way they knew how. Producer Kramer adds another bump of the bizarre, and if there was ever any polished veneer on the album, it's thin as a stamp. If anything, the backgrounds wandered further off into the harsh, sparse, and experimental, and Hall's lyrics skewed more twisted and perverse. As tribal beats circle dervishly, "Martin Scorsese" imagines the iconic director accosted by a more violently intense version of himself, while the almost danceable surprise hit "Detachable Penis" told a meandering (but hilariously absurd) story of one man's worst Lower East Side morning after. The remainder of the album ranges from punk to jazz to sound art on an unsettling, at times uneven, but always fascinating record.
Producers: Kramer, Steve Watson, King Missile.
King Missile: Chris Xefos (vocals, keyboards, bass, percussion), John S. Hall (vocals); Roger Murdock (guitar, keyboards, drums, percussion, emulator); Dave Rick (guitar).
Additional personnel: Mal Rick (clarinet); Kramer (mellotron, bass).
Rolling Stone (3/5/93, p.39) - 3 Stars - Good - "...at times equals the textural brilliance of Captain Beefheart and Frank Zappa..." Entertainment Weekly (2/12/93, p.57) - "...The songs are accessible, but never obvious enough to kill a laugh..." - Rating: A Q (5/93, p.96) - 3 Stars - Good - "...black, and predominantly self-deprecating, humor runs rife alongside tricky tempo changes and the plain goofy....Hall has obviously struck a nerve..." (3/93, p.53) - "...It's rare that music makes you laugh out loud and want to play air guitar at the same time....explodes into a cornucopia of weird things....tremendously fun..." NME (Magazine) (4/3/93, p.28) - 7 - Very Good - "...a set of songs that range from delirious cartoon novelty to full-slam guitar swoon..." King Missile Happy Hour Songs | 1. | Intro |

Happy Hour
$12.59 Black Eyed Peas, the hip-hop crossover juggernaut that propelled singer Fergie and producer Will.I.Am to superstardom, have, since 2003's ELEPHUNK, been audaciously plugging away at their bombastic but lighthearted style of rap-cum-dance pop--an effort that has translated to a run of successful chart-topping singles including "My Humps," "Pump It," and "Don't Phunk with My Heart." Eager to follow up on the platinum-selling success ...
| | Baroness Blue Record CDs (2009) Limited Edition; Deluxe Edition
Happy Hour
$13.58 Georgia-based psychedelic rock band (calling them a metal act seems very reductive, though there's some seriously headbangable material on this disc) Baroness has made a subtle but unmistakable evolutionary leap on this, their second full-length and a clear companion piece to 2007's RED ALBUM. It's hard to say exactly what new guitarist Pete Adams has ...

| | Flight Of The Conchords I Told You I Was Freaky CD (2009) Digipak
Happy Hour
$12.44 After a glorious first season that earned the HBO show six Emmy nominations, Flight of the Conchords' second run didn't quite pack the same comedic punch. Some would say it was because the premise lost its luster, but it was mostly because the music just wasn't as strong. Most of the songs in Season One were pre-written and hashed out over years of stand-up, and for Season Two, Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie were in a time crunch: forced to write a dozen or so funny songs and ten episodes from scratch. Considering the circumstances, FOTC's second Sub-Pop outing, I TOLD YOU I WAS FREAKY, has some worthwhile moments. In the R. Kelly-based "We're in Love with a Sexy Lady," Bret and Jemaine debate semantics while trying to determine if they're after the same lazy-eyed girl. "When'd you meet this lady?/Then./When?/Then./Right then?/Right ...

Happy Hour
$10.49 Coming as it did after the reflective folk-rock of 1988's FAILURE and the lush neo-psychedelic pop of 1990's classic DEAR 23, the more aggressive FROSTING ON THE BEATER was a surprise to many Posies fans. In fact, some thought that its layers of guitar noise, courtesy of producer and Sonic Youth associate Don Fleming, were a post-Nirvana commercial capitulation. However, more thoughtful listening proves such cynicism wrong, as FROSTING ON THE BEATER is as sonically rich and lyrically mature as its predecessors. ...
| | Chicago Very Best Of: Only The Beginning CDs (2002)
Happy Hour
$20.49 Chicago commemorates 35 years of playing together with the career-spanning 2-CD anthology ONLY THE BEGINNING. This Windy City septet started out as one of the few '60s groups aside from Blood, Sweat & Tears and The Electric Flag to fuse a full horn section with a rock band. Chicago's early hits included more aggressive fare like "25 Or 6 To 4," "Beginnings," and a scorching cover of The Spencer Davis Group's "I'm A Man," but they became known as a ballads band as the '70s progressed. AM hits like "Saturday In The Park," "Just You 'N' Me," and "Baby, What A Big ...
