One of the high-water marks of progressive rock (and thus of 1970s rock in general), CLOSE TO THE EDGE found British prog godfathers Yes firing on all cylinders. Throughout their history, they've undergone numerous lineup changes, but this album featured the "classic" formation responsible for their absolute finest achievements. Here Rick Wakeman is at his Moog-goes-Baroque best behind the keyboards, Steve Howe sounds like a blues guitarist from Mars, Chris Squire delivers confoundingly contrapuntal bass lines, and Bill Bruford seemingly solves complex mathematical equations from his drum stool. The lion's share of the album is occupied by the title track, a complex piece that moves through numerous modes and moods. In latter decades, the extended song-suite has been denigrated as indicative of the worst rock pretensions, but, on CLOSE TO THE EDGE, it was a fascinating new concept, and Yes made it work more convincingly than anyone else before or since.
Arranger: Yes.
Personnel: Steve Howe (vocals, guitar); Chris Squire, Jon Anderson (vocals); Rick Wakeman (keyboards); Bill Bruford (drums, percussion).

Uncut (1/04, p.122) - 5 stars out of 5 - "CLOSE TO THE EDGE remains an untarnished pinnalce of '70s tech-flash..." Q (Magazine) (p.120) - "Yes achieved unity here....The title track alone set the template for a strand of brainy rock music that continues through Radiohead's PARANOID ANDROID..." | | John Mayer Battle Studies CD (2009)
Close To The Edge
$11.18 It's no secret that John Mayer is a 21st Century Fox, wining and dining women all through tabloid headlines, so it's about time he delivered an album that traded upon his loverman persona -- and Battle Studies is that record in spades. Retaining more than a modicum of the slick, soul-blues undertones of Continuum, Mayer fashions a modern groove album, a record that maintains a smooth seductive vibe so thoroughly it spills into a one-man ...

| | Nirvana Live At Reading CD (2009)
Close To The Edge
$11.16 Certain concerts create a legend as soon as the final note ceases to ring. Nirvana's headlining appearance at the 1992 Reading Festival is one of these shows, a concert that arrived at precisely the right moment and stands as testament to a band at the peak of its powers...and right before things started to turn sour within the Nirvana camp. Despite the happy news of the birth of Frances Bean Cobain a mere 12 days before this August 30 festival, rumors swirled around Nirvana right up until the band hit the stage. Kurt Cobain took full advantage of these scurrilous stories, making his entrance in a hospital gown and wheelchair pushed by journalist Everett True. Cobain feebly reached for the microphone to croak out the opening lines of "The Rose," only to collapse onto the stage, milking the drama for a moment before leading Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl through a ferocious "Breed." This impish sense of humor has ...

REVIEWS -\"The rhythms are upbeat, the songs original, the recording rich and sensual. An enormous talent.\" ~ J. Lou, The Secret Guide To Music \"Energetic, lushly stylized synth music by a virtuoso artist with a lifetime of music to back her imagination. Her classical background is beautifully evident in \"A Reflection of Ourselves\", featuring piano keyboard interweaving with acoustic guitar rhythms. It\'s hard to tell that these are synth and not acoustic instruments. The subtle flowing beauty of Laurie\'s compositions is showcased in \"The Waterfall\" with delicate phrases, a beautiful closing to a richly satisfying album. She keeps the sound layers in a perfect balance, creating richness without chaos or loss of the integrity of each sound and rhythm... Always rich, moving, ...

Close To The Edge
$13.89 BILLY BAND has completed his CD after a five-year journey. It all began with my New Years resolution of 2003. You see I had been writing songs for years and years. I always knew in my heart these tunes were good, real good. Anyway, I just had an overwhelming need to finally take myself out of my little music room and bring these songs out into the real world. I bought myself a new six string and started playing open mics. I did that for two years once sometimes twice a week. I started to measure my songs up against the ...
