Slightly amended, tribute albums have become the sincerest form of flattery. ENCOMIUM: A TRIBUTE TO LED ZEPPELIN is way overdue, in light of the onslaught of tribute albums that have flooded the marketplace since the late '80s. Although Led Zeppelin was an English band, their influence on American music was inescapable. Thus, of the twelve groups to appear on ENCOMIUM, it's fitting that the only Brits included are Duran Duran, who, along with their American guitarist, do a reverential rendition of "Thank You."
Most of the chosen covers come from the earlier part of Zeppelin's catalog, weighing heavily towards LED ZEPPELIN III and LED ZEPPELIN IV. 4 Non Blondes kick off the festivities with a by-the-numbers-reading of "Misty Mountain Hop" with a riff or two from Santana's "Gypsy Queen" thrown in for good measure. Sheryl Crow wraps her raspy vocals around a rock-steady "D'yer Mak'er," while Rollins Band strong-arms "Four Sticks" to the floor and infuses it with a fair amount of rage. Adding pedal steel and slide guitar to "Tangerine," Big Head Todd & The Monsters gild its essence with a dreamy haze. The most drastically reworked arrangement goes to Tori Amos' reading of "Down By The Seaside." Joined by Robert Plant, Amos slows the tempo, extending the song to eight minutes, while painting it with varying tones never traversed by the original.

$17.49 In the course of putting together the live Led Zeppelin DVD for 2003 release, Jimmy Page came across some great concert recordings from the band's 1972 stint in California. HOW THE WEST WAS WON is three discs' worth of vintage Zep, far superior to the band's only other live album THE SONG REMAINS THE SAME. Encomium: A Tribute To Led Zeppelin album
$13.89 Though he's never become a star, Richard Shindell has quietly made a name for himself over the years in the folk/singer-songwriter world. Coming out of the New York City songwriting school of hard knocks, Shindell crafted a sound that owes to Stan Rogers, John Gorka, and Leonard Cohen, without ever becoming imitative. On his first live album, backed by a small-but-powerful band, Shindell's songs come alive even more than on the studio albums from which they originated.
The title tune, inspired by Wilfrid Owen's WWI poetry, tells a grim tale of wartime tribulations ...

When a decent-sized hype machine shone a spotlight on Sleater-Kinney around the time of 1997's DIG ME OUT, their sound was fresh and invigorating, but at its core starkly simple, revolving around fairly basic, yet oddly bewitching three-minute punk songs injected with the fevered vocals of Carrie Brownstein and Corin Tucker, backed by the Janet Weiss' frenzied beat. Five years later, two serviceable, if not earth-shattering, records proved prelude to the remarkable evolution of the stunning and complex ONE BEAT. Drawing from some of the best elements of punk innovators like Mission Of Burma and ...
