Although it didn't sell in the same numbers as their '80s releases LOVE STINKS and FREEZE FRAME, the J. Geils Band's 1977 album MONKEY ISLAND is considered to be one of the group's best recordings amongst longtime fans. While a few of the tracks still retain the festive rock direction of their earlier releases (most notably their upbeat cover of "I Do," which would become an instant concert staple), MONKEY ISLAND contains a dark undercurrent throughout.
This is most notable on the epic title track, which sounds at times like a jam session between the Rolling Stones and Santana, as well as the vicious rocker "Somebody." MONKEY ISLAND remains the J. Geils Band's most underrated and often overlooked album.
All tracks have been digitally remastered.

One of the best live bands ever, J. Geils could also excel in the studio. This was their best effort. The band is tight, Wolf is outstanding as always, and the assortment of songs showed their musical talents very well.
I used to give this one out as gifts to every friend and they all found something on it they liked.
Bonus- Cissy Houston wailing well with Wolf on Surrender.
Note: The band was so used to being called "Geils" by their fans they released this album that way dropping the "J" and "Band."

"Can you hear me Wolfy? The house is still shaking since June, 1977. Ha!" ... This album has an extremely powerful and dynamic range of peaks for any listening experience. The title track song in itself, "Monkey Island", will stereoize a roller coatser ride like no other. Simply pure and transcendent with hypnotising symphonics for the senses when pushed through the proper system. A jazzy blues mixed with a freight train of boogie effects! ... This album will get your heart pumping with cuts such as "Surrender" and "Somebody", but at the same time, move you spiritually through the darken hallways of life's challenges with songs such as "I'm Falling" and "Wreckage". ... I truly recommend this masterpiece of vintage vinyl for your collection. It won't be complete without it and you will not regret it! ... "Great Vibes - Great Geils!"

Geils best album in my opinion- also the only one that doesn't drag me back to the seventies. Side 2 is where the treasure resides. Stoke up "Monkey Island" and "Wreckage" on a good system for maximum sonic joy. Very dynamic ,detailed sound.
