Joy: A Holiday Collection may surprise some Jewel fans, since it isn't a warm, intimate acoustic album. Then again, it may not, since it arrives on the heels of the exquisitely produced, unabashedly pop Spirit, which had lush musical backdrops for her folk-pop tunes. Joy is a full-bodied expansion of Spirit, however -- an unashamed classicist Christmas album, featuring all of the usual carols delivered with strings and choirs. Because Jewel has a big, powerful, attractive voice, Joy works, even if it is a little too predictable for its own good -- the closing "Christmas Version" of "Hands" is the only true signal, musically at least, that this is a Jewel number. Surely, this holiday album isn't a major addition to her catalog, but for hardcore fans, it may be a nice stocking stuffer. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine Though it contains only three compositions penned by the singer, Jewel's yuletide album JOY: A HOLIDAY COLLECTION still manages to sound like a wholly original set of songs. This is due in large part to the singer's ability to modulate the texture of her voice, a technique that she will occasionally call upon several times within the space of a single song. One example is Jewel's country-flavored rendering of "Winter Wonderland," which benefits from pedal steel guitar and a shuffling, rootsy beat. Jewel blends a light scat/yodeling melange, sultry and plummy diva-like crooning, and an airy and wispy vocal timbre not far from that of Dolly Parton. The more straightforward "Joy to the Word" benefits from warm strings and a piquant, well-placed lute. As one might expect, the take on "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" is a jocular affair, as Jewel mixes her sprightly vocal part amongst a bevy of choir voices. Jewel originals include the Latin-sung "Gloria" and a special Christmas version of the uplifting "Hands," a track that originally appeared on her SPIRIT album. As the song suggests, in Jewel's world, "only kindness matters."

Love Jewel!! She is awesome! Submitted by Jessica (Union, South Carolina) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Beautiful music I absolutely love this CD. It is so beautiful. It is very acoustic, but not weird, like some renditions of christmas songs. I think this is a must for any christmas CD Submitted by a reviewer (Houghton NY) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
One of the best pop artist Christmas albums I've ever heard. Beautifully arranged, undoubtably the best pop artist Christmas recordings since the earliest days of popular music. She sings the most popular songs that we all have known our whole lives with respect to their traditional arrangements without putting a new, unwelcome, pop-sounding spin on the old classics. Superlative use of strings, guitar, and vocals. A real pleasure.

The Moody Blues: Justin Hayward (vocals, guitar); John Lodge (vocals, bass); Ray Thomas (vocals, flute); Graeme Edge (drums). Engineers include: Bill Price, John Punter, Derek Varnals. Principally recorded live at the Royal Albert Hall, London, England on December 12, 1969. Digitally remastered by Steven Fallone. Personnel: Justin Hayward, John Lodge (vocals, guitar); Ray Thomas (vocals, flute); Michael Pinder (vocals, keyboards); Graeme Edge (drums). Recording information: Royal Albert Hall, London, England (05/19/1967-12/12/1969). The Moody Blues released this live concert recording (augmented by some previously unissued studio cuts) after they'd decided to re-form at the end of the 1970s, in order to get some product out and test the waters for their reunion the following year. As their first new release in five years, it sold extremely well on both sides of the Atlantic and fueled the anticipation attending the release of the Octave album a year later. In point of fact, however, the group supposedly never liked the concert much as a document, which is one reason why they didn't authorize its release on CD until 1996 -- the unofficial word among fans is that several of the group members were under the influence of controlled substances during the show and were, thus, less sharp than they might otherwise have been, though you'd never know it from the results here. The 1969 Royal Albert Hall show sounds a lot better on this CD than it did on the LP version, with a closeness that was never evident before -- Justin Hayward's guitar and Mike Pinder's various Mellotrons, in particular, sound really crisp, and all of the singing comes out with more detail as well. Their repertory at this time came primarily from Days of Future Passed, In Search of the Lost Chord, and On the Threshold of a Dream, plus "Gypsy," the one number from To Our Children's Children's Children -- their then new album -- that they actually ...
