After the streamlined dance-rock of their US/UK debut SHABOOH SHOOBAH, INXS took an unexpected left turn into murkier waters with 1984's THE SWING. Although the album contains a couple of hints of the massively successful albums to follow--the jerky "I Send a Message" is basically a blueprint for smoother hits like "What You Need" and "Need You Tonight"--most of THE SWING is arty and sometimes impenetrable. The swirling, nearly psychedelic "Johnson's Aeroplane," as melodic as it is, ranks among the oddest tracks the Australian sextet ever cut, and the atmospheric finale "All the Voices" comes close behind. The mild quirkiness works more often than not, and at times, it suggests directions that might have been more fruitfully explored. The Bryan Ferryish "Burn For You" is a complete delight, and the Nile Rodgers-produced "The Original Sin" is a much more satisfying rock-funk fusion than Duran Duran's contemporary Rodgers collaboration, "The Reflex."

It's a commonly held opinion among fans and band alike that Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers' lone live album, 1986's Pack Up the Plantation, didn't quite capture the group at its peak, so there has been a long-standing need for another live set, which 2009's Live Anthology finally provides. Like its closest cousin, Bruce Springsteen's Live 1975-1985, Live Anthology almost overcompensates for the long wait by offering almost too much music, cherrypicking highlights from 1978 to 2007. One of the lost jewels within the Roger Chapman crown, He Was She Was You Was We Was was the double live album that confirmed the former Family/Streetwalkers frontman as a superstar in Germany in 1982. Recorded late the previous year in Hamburg (and not, as is frequently claimed, during the German TV Rockpalast concert show) and built around his Hyenas album, it blazed through his solo career with furnace-fire aplomb, with a pair of medleys -- one commencing with the old blues shaker "I'm a King Bee," the other with Larry Williams' "Slow Down" -- highlights that few live acts of the era could muster. It is not an oldies show -- anybody coming to a Chapman live album today would be certain to search for Family favorites. They are absent -- this is the sound of Chapman at the top of his game, whether pounding through his own most recent material or dipping back to mash Jimi Hendrix's "Stone Free" with Miles Davis' "Bitch's Brew," while the band -- led by the indefatigable Tim Hinckley -- simply storms. Barely noticed in the U.S. or U.K., He Was She Was You Was We Was became one of the biggest European hits of the year, and it would be another 23 years before it finally received a headlining British release, when reissued by Angel Air in 2005, with one more moment of magnificence appended as a bonus track: a five-minute romp through "I Just Want to Make Love to You." ~ Dave Thompson

The Hentchmen have been playing raw, revved-up garage rock in Detroit long before that was considered a shrewd career move, and more than a few musicians have passed through the group's ranks since it started playing in 1992. One of them was Jack White, who played bass and guitar with the band for a spell in 1998, after his stints in Goober & the Peas and Two-Star Tabernacle but before the White Stripes cut their first album. The Hentchmen recorded a vinyl-only album during White's tenure with the group and, nearly a decade after the fact, Hentch Forth Five has been resurrected on compact disc. Rabid White Stripes fans looking for glimpses of their hero's creative input on this album will be somewhat disappointed -- while his Jimmy Page-influenced guitar chordings pop up briefly on two songs, most of the time White is just playing bass, and this is very much in the same vein as other Hentchmen albums of the period, such as Broad Appeal and Motorvatin'. But saying Hentch Forth Five sounds like the Hentchmen also means the album is lots of fun and rocks with unpretentious glee; "Automatic" will fill up your dancefloor in no time flat, "Me and My Monotone" lifts the key riff from "Roadrunner" ...
