After the streamlined dance-rock of their US/UK debut SHABOOH SHOOBAH, INXS took an unexpected left turn into murkier waters with 1984's THE SWING. Although the album contains a couple of hints of the massively successful albums to follow--the jerky "I Send a Message" is basically a blueprint for smoother hits like "What You Need" and "Need You Tonight"--most of THE SWING is arty and sometimes impenetrable. The swirling, nearly psychedelic "Johnson's Aeroplane," as melodic as it is, ranks among the oddest tracks the Australian sextet ever cut, and the atmospheric finale "All the Voices" comes close behind. The mild quirkiness works more often than not, and at times, it suggests directions that might have been more fruitfully explored. The Bryan Ferryish "Burn For You" is a complete delight, and the Nile Rodgers-produced "The Original Sin" is a much more satisfying rock-funk fusion than Duran Duran's contemporary Rodgers collaboration, "The Reflex."
INXS: Kirk Pengilly (vocals, guitar, saxophone); Jon Farriss (vocals, drums, percussion); Michael Hutchence (vocals); Andrew Farriss (guitar, keyboards); Tim Farriss (guitar, bass); Garry Gary Beers (bass).

Swing
$12.59 Black Eyed Peas, the hip-hop crossover juggernaut that propelled singer Fergie and producer Will.I.Am to superstardom, have, since 2003's ELEPHUNK, been audaciously plugging away at their bombastic but lighthearted style of rap-cum-dance pop--an effort that has translated to a run of successful chart-topping singles including "My Humps," "Pump It," and "Don't Phunk with My Heart." Eager to follow up on the platinum-selling success of 2005's MONKEY BUSINESS, Black Eyed Peas have returned with THE E.N.D. (an acronym for "Energy Never Dies"), their third studio effort. Combining Will.I.Am's thumping 808 kick drum-infused beats with production assistance from a host of collaborators (including vocoder-loving ...
| | Baroness Blue Record CDs (2009) Limited Edition; Deluxe Edition
Swing
$13.58 Georgia-based psychedelic rock band (calling them a metal act seems very reductive, though there's some seriously headbangable material on this disc) Baroness has made a subtle but unmistakable evolutionary leap on this, their second full-length and a clear companion piece to 2007's RED ALBUM. It's hard to say exactly what new guitarist Pete Adams has brought to the band after replacing drummer Allen Blickle's brother Brian, but the band's established blend of Southern sludge riffs, druggy instrumental journeys, and melodic interstitial interludes, all propelled by a particularly thudding drum sound and held together by ...

| | Flight Of The Conchords I Told You I Was Freaky CD (2009) Digipak
Swing
$12.44 After a glorious first season that earned the HBO show six Emmy nominations, Flight of the Conchords' second run didn't quite pack the same comedic punch. Some would say it was because the premise lost its luster, but it was mostly because the music just wasn't as strong. Most of the songs in Season One were pre-written and hashed out over years of stand-up, and for Season Two, Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie were in a time crunch: forced to write a dozen or so funny songs and ten episodes from scratch. Considering the circumstances, FOTC's second Sub-Pop outing, I TOLD YOU I WAS FREAKY, has some worthwhile moments. In the R. Kelly-based "We're in Love with a Sexy Lady," Bret and Jemaine debate semantics while trying to determine if they're after the same lazy-eyed girl. "When'd you meet this lady?/Then./When?/Then./Right then?/Right then./Where?/There./Over there?/Over there./Over there there?/Over there there there," and so on, building up to Bret's ultimate question, "Was her name Brabra?" To which Jemaine replies, No I think it was Barbara."..."It was Barbara there's no such name as Brabra." It's the same straight-faced humor fans have grown to love. There's no satire quite as on-point as their tribute to David Bowie, but the duo busts out a hearty batch of sad-faced raps ("Hurt Feelings"), ...

Those of you who found yourselves mysteriously drawn to the dark sexuality of Garbage's debut might not get what you expect from their follow-up--at least at first. But a closer listen reveals that VERSION 2.0 is actually much closer to the true Garbage sound. The reason: Where GARBAGE was already more or less completed when Shirley Manson signed up, 2.0 allows her much more freedom to control the group's sound. The distorted guitar hooks, loops and industrialized production that defined Garbage's sound on their debut are still present, but tempered by Ms. Manson's strong pop sensibilities. If you listen closely, you can even catch hints of Blondie and the Pretenders. (They quote the Pretenders "The Talk ...
