This is the defining album of East Coast crime rap, which was largely established by the Brooklyn-based Boot Camp Clik of MCs. ENTA DA STAGE is a classic in its genre, featuring deep-in-the-crates beats by DJ Evil Dee (who continues to have a presence in New York's underground hip-hop scene), lurid street imagery delivered by MCs Buckshot and 5T and a flavor forever reminiscent of early-'90s New York.
As much a social phenomenon as a congregation of MCs and DJs, the Boot Camp Clik spawned Smif-N-Wesson (who later changed their name to Cocoa Brovaz after the arms manufacturer commenced litigation), Heltah Skeltah and the Originoo Gunn Clappaz. ENTA DA STAGE contains the classics "Who's Got Da Props?", "How Many MC'są," "Buck Em Down," (a perfect example of Black Moon's fondness for choosing jazzy loops as the foundations for epic tales of criminal adventurism, a style perfected on "Shit iz Real") and the contagious "I Got Cha Opin." Released at a time when rap was mired in average lyrics and mediocre beats, Brand Nubian's ONE FOR ALL was the answer to the question: "Is the hip-hop hype dying down?" There were few groups taking over both the airwaves and the underground (markers for the music's progress and popularity), and this debut--featuring the talents of Grand Puba, Derek X (now known as Sadat X) and Lord Jamar--was hip-hop's equivalent of a shiny, new (-school) light.
With the teachings of the Nation Of Islam laid over Roy Ayers' "Everybody Loves The Sunshine," "Wake Up" was Puba's attempt to open the eyes of the black community to self-debilitating issues such as the crack epidemic. But it was the popularity of the summer anthem "Slow Down" that raised Brand Nubian to their lofty commercial perch. "Step To The Rear" is another worthy track that spotlights Grand Puba, previously a member of the Masters Of Ceremony. He also contributed "Who Can Get Busy Like This Man...," a ragamuffin hip-hop track that proved he was capable of flippin' his lyrics with a reggae twist.

One of the most important metal bands of the 1980s, Mercyful Fate took the gloom and doom of Black Sabbath, infused it with the faster tempos of Judas Priest, and added the complexity of prog rock. Meshing the sinister riffs and vibrant guitar harmonies of Michael Denner and Hank Shermann with the sterling rhythm section of bassist Timi Hansen and drummer Kim Ruzz, then topping it all off with the ghostly baritone and infamous falsetto of King Diamond, Denmark's renowned Satanic quintet took dark metal to a whole new level. Five-minute gems like "Evil" and "At The Sound Of The Demon Bell" feature enough ideas for two separate numbers apiece, with the band creatively using unexpected rhythmic and dynamic changes and unconventional song structures.
The album's standout is the radical epic "Satan's Fall," which exceeds 11 minutes and only repeats the introductory section twice, with every new movement presenting something new. But even on the short and sweet "Black Funeral," Mercyful Fate make the most of the material. Even if one cannot get past Diamond's Satanic lyrical musings, the band's music makes for a potent listening experience, one that can certainly grow addicting for those ...
