(1 Customer Review)
In the earliest years of the hip-hop game, women were quite frequently overlooked until a new breed of female lyricist came along and gave the proverbial middle finger to a male-dominated game. MC Lyte's debut ushered in the era of the female MC -- confident, brazen, and not afraid to put male MCs in their misogynist place without flinching. The album starts off with a rather slow introduction before kicking things into high gear with the now classic title track, which put Lyte in the center of a media frenzy. With Lyte reasserting her femininity over and over again without compromising production quality or lyric delivery, Lyte as a Rock has aged better than most records that came out during hip-hop's formative years, although at certain moments it has become dated since its release. But what has aged is more than compensated by the classic tunes and the disc's potent historical impact on a generation of women MCs. A classic. ~ Rob Theakston

Lyte As A Rock album
$6.39 A year after debuting with the Doug E. Fresh/Slick Rick dis record "Showstopper," the Queens duo known as Salt-N-Pepa hit the scene with their first full-length release, HOT, COOL & VICIOUS. The XX chromosome version of Run-D.M.C., Salt and Pepa traded high-energy tag-team rhymes over funky mid-1980s hip-hop production that utilized break records from the Meters, Wilson Pickett, the Pointer ...
| | M C Lyte Eyes On This CD (1989)
Lyte As A Rock CD music
$7.69 A rapper with considerable technique and a fine sense of humor, Lyte was one of the most highly regarded female MCs of the late '80s and early '90s -- especially on the East Coast. Eyes on This, the Brooklyn native's second album, tends to be one-dimensional lyrically -- she spends too much time bragging about how superior her rapping skills are and how inept sucker MCs are. Though it's hard not to admire the technique ...
| | Black Moon Enta Da Stage CD (1993)
Lyte As A Rock music CDs
$12.99 This is the defining album of East Coast crime rap, which was largely established by the Brooklyn-based Boot Camp Clik of MCs. ENTA DA STAGE is a classic in its genre, featuring deep-in-the-crates beats by DJ Evil Dee (who continues to have a presence in New York's underground hip-hop scene), lurid street imagery delivered by MCs Buckshot and 5T and a flavor forever reminiscent of early-'90s New York.
As much a social phenomenon as a congregation of MCs and DJs, the Boot Camp Clik spawned Smif-N-Wesson (who later changed their name to Cocoa Brovaz after the arms manufacturer commenced litigation), Heltah Skeltah and the Originoo Gunn Clappaz. ENTA DA STAGE contains the classics "Who's Got Da Props?", "How Many MC'są," "Buck Em Down," (a perfect example of Black Moon's fondness for choosing jazzy loops as the foundations for epic tales of criminal adventurism, a style perfected on "Shit iz Real") and the contagious "I Got Cha Opin." Buckshot and 5T's delivery styles are somewhat monotonous ...
| | Big Daddy Kane Long Live The Kane CD (1988)
Lyte As A Rock songs
$6.29 An eternally revered figure in hip-hop, Brooklyn's Big Daddy Kane first broke into the biz writing rhymes for Biz Markie. Kane had just a handful of singles and appearances to his name at the time of his first full-length release. Arguably his best record, LONG LIVE THE KANE sees the King Asiatic Nobody's Equal flipping ...
| | Big Daddy Kane It's A Big Daddy Thing CD (1989)
Lyte As A Rock album
$9.39 Big Daddy Kane had already sealed his place in the hip-hop canon by the time his second classic full-length, IT'S A BIG DADDY THING, dropped in 1989. Featuring an expanded production staff including Prince Paul, Easy Mo Bee, Mister Cee, and Teddy Riley as well as a few beats from Marley Marl, IT'S A BIG DADDY THING finds the Bed-Stuy native as sharp as ever, slap-boxing listeners' ears with rapid-fire one-liners. At 17 tracks deep, IT'S A BIG DADDY THING combines positive Afro-centrism ("Young, ...
| | X-Clan To The East, Blackwards CD (1990)
Lyte As A Rock CD music
$9.79 The self-sufficient X Clan should've made a bigger splash with To the East, Blackwards, the group's debut album for 4th & Broadway. Name-dropping Nat Turner and Marcus Garvey and dressing in red, black, and green instead of black and silver didn't exactly lend itself to marketability in 1990, but there's no evidence to the contrary that this Afrocentric group released one of the best rap records that year -- which is saying ...

Lyte As A Rock album

One of the most important metal bands of the 1980s, Mercyful Fate took the gloom and doom of Black Sabbath, infused it with the faster tempos of Judas Priest, and added the complexity of prog rock. Meshing the sinister riffs and vibrant guitar harmonies of Michael Denner and Hank Shermann with the sterling rhythm section of bassist Timi Hansen and drummer Kim Ruzz, then topping it all off with the ghostly baritone and infamous falsetto of King Diamond, Denmark's renowned Satanic quintet took dark metal to a whole new level. Five-minute gems like ...
