With a rougher image and a more focused, aggressive sound than in their hairspray and spandex days on an independent label, Texas natives Pantera made a serious dent in the heavy music scene with the major label release of COWBOYS FROM HELL, ... Full Descriptionwhich inspired radio play and MTV support. While Metallica and Megadeth were watering down their approach for a more mainstream sound, Pantera got harder with VULGAR DISPLAY OF POWER.
From the moment vocalist Phil Anselmo screams his first "Revenge!" in "Mouth for War," the stage is set. Drummer Vinnie Paul showcases relentless technical prowess thrashing out complex double-bass drum patterns in "A New Level" and "By Demons be Driven," while guitarist Diamond Darrell's seemingly endless supply of hard-grooving, blues-inspired hooks are the heart of "No Good" and "Live in a Hole." In the emotional power-ballad "Hollow," the song's protagonist faces the heartache of having a friend trapped in a coma; and just as in the epic "Cemetery Gates" from COWBOYS FROM HELL, Anselmo continues to struggle with the consequences of fate and the will of the world.
Recorded at Pantego Sound Studio, Pantego, Texas.
Pantera: Philip Anselmo (vocals); Diamond Darrell (guitar); Rex (bass); Vinnie Paul (drums).
Entertainment Weekly (3/6/92, p.59) - "..one of the most satisfying heavy metal records since Metallica's early-80s cult days...11 caustic songs of unabashed brute force...a fully realized album that goes way beyond metal's usual crunch-and-burn.." - Rating: A Q (7/01, p.90) - Included in Q's "50 Heaviest Albums of All Time" - "...Pantera's new, heavier direction...was succinctly summed up by 'A New Level's sludge-thick chorus and the neck-snapping riffage of bile-flecked hate anthem 'F***ing Hostile'..." R.I.P. DIMEBAG DARRELL PANTERA is definitly metal. i dont care about their earlier stuff, this is a solid album. that being said, this album is EXCELLENT and rocks in so many ways. DIMEBAG is one of the best guitarists ever, as well as my personal hero, along with RANDY RHOADS. and phil anselmo sounds absolutley LIVID throughout this release. if you like this i reccomend COWBOYS FROM HELL, MASTER OF PUPPETS and REIGN IN BLOOD.

One of the Top 10 Hard Rock/Metal Albums EVER Yeah, I said it. If you don't own this, and play it frequently to remind yourself how good metal used to be, go pick up In Sync and ride the rainbow for the rest of your life. What I like best about Pantera is their open embrace of pure metal music, with intelligence, sophistication, and melody, as well as agression and pure brutality. They did it better than anyone. And they carried the torch alone during the 90's when grunge came around and Metallica turned into baby wussies.
The collection of songs on this album has to be, front to back, one of the most complete musical masterpieces in the genre. I can't even begin to pick favorites. Submitted by Div (Somewhere In Time) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Vulgar Display Of Power music CDs
$26.85 Ajattara is the sound of primordial nightmare. Attempting to describe their music in less abstract terms, one could always mention it is predominantly mid-tempo, riff-heavy black metal with distant, astral synths. Yet that is just a lame scratch on the surface when dealing with such a true enigma as Ajattara undoubtedly are. As those fortunate enough to have heard the obscure demos the main man Ruoja (guitar, vocals) created in his lone cabin in the woods during late nineties know, the Ajattara sound has been decidedly constant. The line-up was finally completed with Malakias I (drums) and Atoni (bass) in preparation for the recording of the first album "Itse" ("self"). The album made a remarkable impact on the public with its brutal, yet crystal-clear sound and the sheer strength of the material itself. Special heed must be ...
