Their second album, MOVING debuted the song for which they are best remembered, "Puff The Magic Dragon", which was a top-5 hit. The album also contained more traditional folk chestnuts like "A'Soalin'" and "Old Coat".
After the tremendous success of their debut, Peter, Paul and Mary issued their sophomore album, MOVING, in 1963. While not as consistent as their first effort, MOVING still contains plenty of what made the trio one of the most popular acts of the '60s. Spare, acoustic guitar-driven folk songs are carried by the pure, interlocking voices of the three members, while nods to the New Deal-era folk tradition and the tumultuous political climate of the '60s are blended with a keen sense of commercial accessibility.
The record's most well-known song is certainly Peter Yarrow's "Puff the Magic Dragon," a children's song that became an unexpected hit single and was later shrouded in controversy due to the song's supposed drug references. The rest of the album fits firmly in the neo-hippie coffeehouse tradition with songs like "A 'Soalin'," "Pretty Mary," and a version of Woody Guthrie's "This Land Is Your Land." Though newcomers to PP&M should turn to their BEST OF compilation first, MOVING is a solid effort that showcases the group's classic sound and spectacular harmonies.

Classic Folk Music This is great Folk Music that you need to hear at its best. I had this album in my vinyl collection since 1963 when I was in college. The 1960's gave birth to Folk and I was in love with it. There are real down to earth "messages" in Folk music that almost have a Biblical significance to them. I never heard a Folk song that didn't make me see the light a bit differently each time you hear it.
Peter Paul and Mary are absolute master artists in the Folk music field. The song "Old Coat" got me then and really got me now!!! Submitted by Norman W. (Pennsylvania) Was This Review Helpful? YesNo
