Q (12/93, p.133) - 3 Stars - Good - "...[LONG PLAYER] is possibly [The Faces'] best. It represents how they're remembered: unrestrained arrangements, lots of yelping and hoarsy vocals..." Hide Description Long Player Music Review Average Rating: (4.7 out of 5 stars) Rod should have stayed with them The Faces play great rock n' roll for sitting around relaxing with friends, good beat and good feeling music. Best Rock'n'Roll Album I'm 13 and i have the LP and i love it Submitted by Nick (Deer Park, Wisconsin, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Bad 'N' Ruin This album was my first exposure to Rod Stewart, and, The Faces. (San Fransico, 1971) I felt like I had rediscovered Rock 'n' Roll. From the first guitar notes, and, the howling vocal intro to Bad 'N' Ruin I knew something very special was coming my way. There is a raw, rude, sexy quality to this album that I think defines what Rock 'n' Roll is all about. Ron Wood's guitar work is a tour de force, and, Rod, and, the band swing, and, sway like wild horses drunk on scotch whiskey. The slow songs are sweet, and, drip with emotion, but, don't lose their touch with traditional folk values. A must for any fan of any member of this band, or, of what Rock 'n' Roll is suppossed to sound like, and, emote. Tell Everyone! Submitted by Gene (Kansas City, Missouri) Was This Review Helpful? Long Player album
$6.05 In between their departure from the Jeff Beck Group and their joining the Small Faces, Rod Stewart and buddy Ron Wood went into the studio to record THE ROD STEWART ALBUM (aka AN OLD RAINCOAT WON'T EVER LET YOU DOWN). Within the span of eight songs, Stewart used his soulful rasp to dismiss any ideas that he was merely Beck's singer. With Wood riding shotgun and playing potent bottleneck guitar, Stewart's talents were demonstrated on mostly self-penned material.
The only exceptions were a rollicking "Street Fighting Man," a baroque reading of Mike D'Abo's "Handbags And Gladrags" (featuring D'Abo on piano) and folkie Ewan MacColl's "Dirty Old Town." Stewart's own material showed off a love of sweeping storytelling ("Blind Prayer"), and even a bit of proggy experimentation ("I Wouldn't Ever Change A Thing" with Keith Emerson on organ).
The golden throated rocker's ...
| | Small Faces First Step CD (1970)
Long Player CD music
$6.39 Where the original Small Faces had been a quintessential British mod band, the reconfigured group instantly emerged as a boozy party band. FIRST STEP perfectly captures this new direction. All five members contribute to the songwriting in various capacities. The only outside material on the album is Bob Dylan's "Wicked Messenger," which slithers out of the gates with dirty slide guitar, sexy organ, and thundering drums. The Faces went onto enjoy the stateside success that had eluded their earlier incarnation. But Stewart's burgeoning solo career relegated the band to the shadows, and The Faces eventually dissolved.
The Small Faces offer a rare example of a band that underwent significant changes ...
| | Faces Nod Is As Good As A Wink... To A Blind Horse CD (1971)
Long Player music CDs
$6.39 When this was released in 1971, the Faces also released LONG PLAYER (following the dropping of "Small" from the band's name) and frontman Rod Stewart released the seminal EVERY PICTURE TELLS A STORY. The three-album output was especially remarkable for the Faces, as the band was more known for skirt-chasing and carousing than recording music. NOD found the Faces fusing together a grittier blues and soul sound than on past efforts, which were marked by a rather modish sound and Stewart's then-folkier leanings.
The group includes enough heartfelt ruminations to add a sentimental edge to the otherwise rip-roaring mix of material. Among the latter class of songs are a shambling cover of Chuck Berry's "Memphis, Tennessee" and "Stay With Me," the Faces' only hit and the quintessential groupie kiss-off. Stewart's talents as a balladeer are no less effective, with songs like the poignant "Love Lives Here" and the Ronnie ...
| | Faces Ooh La La CD (1973)
Long Player songs
$6.39 Lane takes lead vocals on his own "Flags and Banners" and wrote the majority of the album's latter half. The remaining parts of OOH LA LA include Stewart and Wood's boogie-fried "Silicone Grown" and two songs spotlighting the inimitable keyboardist Ian McLagan--the atypically poppy, almost Elton John-like "Cindy Incidentally" and the stomping rocker "Borstal Boys," one of the Faces' finest tunes. Although hints of the band's dissolution are everywhere throughout the record, this is paradoxically also the most "group"-like album the Faces ever did, with all five members making significant contributions.
By the time the Faces' fourth album came out in 1973, Rod Stewart had already become a solo superstar, causing stresses within the band. Stewart and founding member/bassist ...
| | Rainbow Rising CD (1976) Remastered
Long Player album
$6.39 As the drums kick into the fierce opener "Tarot Woman," it's obvious that RISING delivers directly to your door. It is the band's second release, and a vast improvement over RICHIE BLACKMORE'S RAINBOW. With a revamped lineup that sounds like it had been touring together for years, the album takes no prisoners. "Starstruck" is a classic groove reminiscent of guitarist Blackmore's ex-band Deep Purple. Blackmore replaced everyone from the first album's lineup except vocalist Ronnie Dio with Jimmy Bain (bass), Tony Carey (keyboards), and Cozy Powell (drums). Dio shows what he's got with a stellar performance on "Do You Close Your Eyes." "Stargazer" is the band's "Kashmir," ...
| | VH1 Presents The Corrs Live In Dublin CD (2002)
Long Player CD music
$6.39 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine."
Somewhat more mysteriously, Rolling Stone Ron Wood also turns up on what sounds dangerously close to a lounge version of Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing," but this minor faux pas is redeemed by the Irish folk medley "Joy of Life/Trout ...
