By the mid-1970s, Gordon Lightfoot had become a full-fledged pop star, a staple of AM radio, and a regular denizen of the Billboard charts. While his production sensibilities at the time had expanded a bit by the time of SUNDOWN, he was never a folk purist to begin with, and it's a superficial distinction at best. What's important is that Lightfoot's songwriting acumen actually grew with his fame. "Circle of Steel," for example, is a cutting sociopolitical commentary that he probably wouldn't have been able to turn out a few years earlier. On the other side of the fence, the casual sensuality of the title track would have stuck out like a sore thumb on Lightfoot's earliest, more mannered albums. The easy blend of folk and pop on the hit "Carefree Highway" represents the unique paradigm that was always at the heart of both Lightfoot's gift and his wide appeal.
Live RecordingQ (7/93, p.109) - 4 Stars - Excellent - "...By 1974, and SUNDOWN, Lightfoot was an international draw...all [songs] lyrically acute and tuneful to a fault, in places warmly embracing country..." Gordon Lightfoot Sundown Songs Sundown Music Review Average Rating: (4.8 out of 5 stars) Sundown Perhaps Lightfoot's Best This album is one of those that you can put on and not hear a bad song. Gord was in his writing and singing prime on Sundown. Another great thing about this album is that, even though it was recorded on analog tape back in the bad old days, all of the instruments sound great, especially the acoustic guitars. Sundown and CSN's debut album are two of the best acoustic guitar recordings in my opinon. This one is a keeper. Submitted by a reviewer (Raleigh, NC, USA) Was This Review Helpful? A Classic Troubador Nary a bad song on this album...GL was a rare artist who grew better as he got more exposure. Many fine songs on this record, but the one that stays in my head is "Too Late for Prayin'". What a great song...it still sends chills up my spine. Take a listen to one of the great troubadors of modern music...you'll be enthralled by his talent. Submitted by Frank (Corva, Italy) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Another masterpiece by the master musician Sundown is definitely one of his best works written and performed during his prime years. All the melodies and words are exceptional. You don't get tired of listening to them because they stand the test of time. I can't say enough of his talents and abilities. The songs soothe and bring contentment. If you haven't obtained this one, you are missing out. Submitted by rebid (Chubbuck, ID) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Purchase Sundown CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Van Morrison His Band & Street Choir CD (1970)
Sundown album
$8.79 The dark night of the soul that culminated in ASTRAL WEEKS found its counterpart in Morrison's next two albums, the seminal MOONDANCE and its subsequent sister, HIS BAND & THE STREET CHOIR. Both released in 1970, these latter two albums defined the folk/soul/blues amalgam that would prove to be the foundation of Morrison's music. The photos inside the sleeve reveal Van as country gentleman, looking at home and (dare we say it) happy. This image is furthered by his then-wife Janet Planet's liner notes, which paint a picture of Van as a man reborn.
The music more than bears this out. ...
| | Gordon Lightfoot Summertime Dream CD (1976)
Sundown CD music
$16.09 With Summertime Dream, Gordon Lightfoot produced one of his finest albums, and wrapped up a six-year period of popularity that he would not recapture. Propelled by his second biggest hit, "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald," Summertime Dream summed up the sound that had ...
| | Gordon Lightfoot United Artists Collection CDs (1993)
Sundown music CDs
$8.99 THE UNITED ARTISTS COLLECTION contains 49 tracks on 2 discs and captures all of the studio recordings Gordon Lightfoot made between 1964 and 1969. The booklet includes extensive liner notes and rare photographs.
THE UNITED ARTISTS COLLECTION, which includes every original track from Canadian singer/songwriter Gordon Lightfoot's first four albums, will prove illuminating to those who only know Lightfoot from his biggest hits, most of which came a bit later. The Canuck troubadour's folk roots are more obvious on his early recordings; that's not to say that there's anything traditionally folkie here by any means, since the material resembles a more pop-minded version of fellow Canadians Ian & Sylvia. ...
| | Faust/So Far CD (1972)
Sundown songs
$12.99 Though a commercial blip in its day, Krautrock has become one of the most enduring movements in music history, with countless indie acts namedropping the genre's most famous as influences. Now, as then, Hamburg's Faust gets the least love. Revisited Records hopes to change that with this long overdue reissue of the band's classic second long-player, SO FAR. One of the worst commercial failures in the history of Virgin Records, SO FAR was a slight capitulation to the marketplace after their mellow-harshing debut: there are some hints of accessible grooves (the mesmerizing opener, "It's A Rainy Day, Sunshine Girl") and melodicism (the Jimmy Page-ish guitar and flute of "On the Way to Adamae") to pull in the faint of heart.
Otherwise, SO FAR builds on the drastic pastiches of the first album: proto-industrial soundscapes evaporate into dreamier, layered ones and back again throughout the album's nine tracks. Faust didn't have the groove of Can, the thrust of Neu!, or the riffs of Amon Duul, but they had guts and an unsinkable sense of "anything goes." Given the success of ...
| | Gene Clark No Other CD (1974)
Sundown album
$11.79 Ex-Byrd Gene Clark's early-'70s solo efforts, which rank alongside the recordings of the Flying Burrito Brothers and Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young in terms of quality, vision, and appeal, have been unjustly overlooked. This is particularly true of NO OTHER, Clark's 1974 coup de grace. While the focus of NO OTHER's excellent predecessors WHITE LIGHT and ROADMASTER was on stripped down, passionate country-rock, NO OTHER pushes Clark's aesthetic to another level entirely. A cadre of female backing vocalists lend gospel-drenched color to the album, taking Clark's excellent compositions to church, and giving the whole a sanctified feel.
Amid the strummed acoustics and weeping pedal steel of songs like "Life's Greatest Fool" and "The True One," there is also the expansive, orchestral feel of "Strength of Strings" which sounds like the Moody ...
| | Lee Hazlewood Requiem For An Almost Lady CDs (1971)
Sundown CD music
$12.95 Requiem for an Almost Lady is the rarest of Lee Hazlewood's albums because it was released in 1971 exclusively in Sweden (where Hazlewood also completed his cult classic Cowboy in Sweden album) and the United Kingdom. The album is one of the most beautifully agonizing breakup records to ever hit wax, culled from a composite of Hazlewood's relationships gone wrong. Spoken word introductions precede each of the ten brief songs and reveal Hazlewood's poetic soul, while the songs themselves are full of longing and witty, clever cynicism coupled with a sad-eyed idealism that paints the music as even more visceral and grievous. Hazlewood spares none of his past loves. Requiem is often cutting, even harsh, as is evident with songs such as "I'd Rather Be Your Enemy" and "I'm Glad I Never..." (as in never owned a gun), but there is an underlying feeling of tenderness, as if Hazlewood is only talking tough to hide his own deep hurt. The album creates an impossibly cavernous warmth, with only acoustic guitar and electric bass backing ...
| | Buck Owens I've Got A Tiger By The Tail CD (1965)
Sundown music CDs
$11.79 Buck Owens had his share of country hits prior to the release of I've Got a Tiger by the Tail and the hit single that spawned it. But "I've Got a Tiger by the Tail" was Owens' national breakthrough, featuring everything right about his Bakersfield honky tonk sound sweated down to a 2:12 single that proved to be a irresistible piece of crossover magic to non-country fans without diluting his basic sound one iota. This 14-track CD reissue brings together the original Capitol tracks from that album (which also included the hit "Cryin' Time," later to be a crossover hit of its own when recorded by Ray Charles), along with two bonus tracks. These are live versions recorded in Bakersfield at the Civic Auditorium in October 1963 of "This Ol' Heart" and "Act Naturally," taken from the Capitol anthology album Country Music Hootenanny. The sound of Don Rich is all over this album, with his signature biting Telecaster guitar style, plus his vocalizing on "Wham Bam" (which features Owens on lead guitar) and a feature with Buck on a duet of Chuck Berry's "Memphis." Bass player Doyle Holly handles the vocal chores on "Streets of Laredo," while Don Rich's fiddle work is highlighted on the instrumental "A Maiden's Prayer." But ultimately it's Owens' show with tracks like "Trouble and Me," "We're Gonna Let the Good Times Roll," "If You Fall Out of Love With Me," "The Band Keeps Playin' On," and the ...
