By the mid-1970s, Gordon Lightfoot had become a full-fledged pop star, a staple of AM radio, and a regular denizen of the Billboard charts. While his production sensibilities at the time had expanded a bit by the time of SUNDOWN, he was never a folk purist to begin with, and it's a superficial distinction at best. What's important is that Lightfoot's songwriting acumen actually grew with his fame. "Circle of Steel," for example, is a cutting sociopolitical commentary that he probably wouldn't have been able to turn out a few years earlier. On the other side of the fence, the casual sensuality of the title track would have stuck out like a sore thumb on Lightfoot's earliest, more mannered albums. The easy blend of folk and pop on the hit "Carefree Highway" represents the unique paradigm that was always at the heart of both Lightfoot's gift and his wide appeal.
Live RecordingQ (7/93, p.109) - 4 Stars - Excellent - "...By 1974, and SUNDOWN, Lightfoot was an international draw...all [songs] lyrically acute and tuneful to a fault, in places warmly embracing country..." Gordon Lightfoot Sundown Songs Sundown Music Review Average Rating: (4.8 out of 5 stars) Sundown Perhaps Lightfoot's Best This album is one of those that you can put on and not hear a bad song. Gord was in his writing and singing prime on Sundown. Another great thing about this album is that, even though it was recorded on analog tape back in the bad old days, all of the instruments sound great, especially the acoustic guitars. Sundown and CSN's debut album are two of the best acoustic guitar recordings in my opinon. This one is a keeper. Submitted by a reviewer (Raleigh, NC, USA) Was This Review Helpful? A Classic Troubador Nary a bad song on this album...GL was a rare artist who grew better as he got more exposure. Many fine songs on this record, but the one that stays in my head is "Too Late for Prayin'". What a great song...it still sends chills up my spine. Take a listen to one of the great troubadors of modern music...you'll be enthralled by his talent. Submitted by Frank (Corva, Italy) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Another masterpiece by the master musician Sundown is definitely one of his best works written and performed during his prime years. All the melodies and words are exceptional. You don't get tired of listening to them because they stand the test of time. I can't say enough of his talents and abilities. The songs soothe and bring contentment. If you haven't obtained this one, you are missing out. Submitted by rebid (Chubbuck, ID) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Sundown album
$11.99 With most contemporary country artists, you could guarantee that a song called "American Ride" would be a slice of jingoism, but Toby Keith isn't like most country singers. His "American Ride" casts a cynical eye at desperate housewives and wannabe pop stars, not celebrating down-home values but wondering where we're all headed on this American Ride at the end of the 2000s, a sentiment not all that far removed from some of Keith's previous social commentary, which makes it a mild surprise that it is the only song here that doesn't come from his own pen. As superb and striking as it is, it's not necessarily a good keystone for the rest of the record, which does have a few tougher numbers that pick up on the lean, mean vibe of 2008's THAT DON'T MAKE ME A BAD GUY -- "Every Dog Has Its Day," the sly "If I Had One," and the heavy blues stomp "Loaded" -- but spends more time on the softer side, even when he kicks up a bit of dust on the dancefloor on "You Can't Read My Mind" or does a funny, respectful salute to military life on "Ballad of Balad." In other words, the real touchstone for the rest of the record is "Tender as I Wanna Be," where he lets his guard down and lets the romance flow. This doesn't turn AMERICAN RIDE into a schizophrenic jumble, as Keith has always balanced these two extremes, but after spending a little bit more time swaggering than wooing, he's back to crooning and it's ...
| | Lorrie Morgan Moment In Time CD (2009)
Sundown CD music
$10.89 Lorrie Morgan is no stranger to the limelight, demonstrating incredible talent as a vocalist -- she began her singing career in her teens at the Grand Ole Opry, was a session vocalist for years, and finally emerged as an artist and star in her own right. Since 1989 she's scored three number one singles, charted with 25 more, and has recorded nine studio albums, the latest being A MOMENT IN TIME, a 2009 gem of an album recorded for the Country Crossing imprint. There are literally dozens of records that have been recorded in the 21st century where artists cover classic country songs. Lorrie Morgan's take on the same thing is worth seeking out because it leaves the others in the dust. For starters, these 14 songs were cut in two absolutely live-to-tape studio sessions. There are no overdubs of any kind and all the participants, from the band to the vocal chorus to the string section, ...

| | Essential Willie Nelson CDs (2003) Limited Edition; Remastered
Sundown album
$15.95 This CD commemorates Willie Nelson's 70th Birthday (April 30, 2003).
The catalog of Willie Nelson is so vast and rich that assembling an "essential" collection of only one or two discs seems nearly impossible. RCA's single-disc 1995 attempt was admirable and worthy, but doomed by space limitations. With a bit more room to move, Legacy's roomier two-disc collection is about close as anyone could hope to come. We get the full view of the great singer/songwriter's artistic journey.
"Hello Walls" and the evergreen "Crazy" hail from the days when Nelson was tooling around Nashville as a songwriter for hire but mystifyingly unable to connect as a solo artist. His transformation into a counterculture icon via the '70s "outlaw country" movement is marked by the likes of "Me and Paul" and "Bloody Mary Morning." His tremendous skill as in interpreter can be heard in such standards as "Blue Skies" and "Georgia ...

| | Lee Hazlewood Requiem For An Almost Lady CDs (1971)
Sundown music CDs
$12.95 Requiem for an Almost Lady is the rarest of Lee Hazlewood's albums because it was released in 1971 exclusively in Sweden (where Hazlewood also completed his cult classic Cowboy in Sweden album) and the United Kingdom. The album is one of the most beautifully agonizing breakup records to ever hit wax, culled from a composite of Hazlewood's relationships gone wrong. Spoken word introductions precede each of the ten brief songs and reveal Hazlewood's poetic soul, while the songs themselves are full of longing and witty, clever cynicism coupled with a sad-eyed idealism that paints the music as even more visceral and grievous. Hazlewood spares none of his past loves. Requiem is often cutting, even harsh, as is evident with songs such as "I'd Rather Be Your Enemy" and "I'm Glad I Never..." (as in never owned a gun), but there is an underlying feeling of tenderness, as if Hazlewood is only talking tough to hide his own deep hurt. The album creates an impossibly cavernous warmth, with only acoustic guitar and electric bass backing provided by Jerry Cole, Donnie Owens, and Joe Cannon. Although there are hints of Hazlewood's cowboy sound on "L.A. Lady" and "Must Have Been Something I Loved," Requiem actually steers much closer to folky psychedelic pop territory, particularly the sound of California at the end of ...
| | Buck Owens I've Got A Tiger By The Tail CD (1965)
Sundown songs
$11.89 Buck Owens had his share of country hits prior to the release of I've Got a Tiger by the Tail and the hit single that spawned it. But "I've Got a Tiger by the Tail" was Owens' national breakthrough, featuring everything right about his Bakersfield honky tonk sound sweated down to a 2:12 single that proved to be a irresistible piece of crossover magic to non-country fans without diluting his basic sound one iota. This 14-track CD reissue brings together the original Capitol tracks from that album (which also included the hit "Cryin' Time," later to be a crossover hit of its own when recorded by Ray Charles), along with two bonus tracks. These are live versions recorded in Bakersfield at the Civic Auditorium in October 1963 of "This Ol' Heart" and "Act Naturally," taken from the Capitol anthology album Country Music Hootenanny. The sound of Don Rich is all over this album, with his signature biting Telecaster guitar style, plus his vocalizing on "Wham Bam" (which features Owens on lead guitar) and a feature with Buck on a duet of Chuck Berry's "Memphis." Bass player Doyle Holly handles the vocal chores on "Streets of Laredo," while Don Rich's fiddle work is highlighted on the instrumental "A Maiden's Prayer." But ultimately it's Owens' show with tracks like "Trouble and Me," "We're Gonna Let the Good Times Roll," "If You Fall Out of Love With Me," "The Band Keeps Playin' On," and the ballad "Let the Sad Times Roll On" being classic examples of Owens' Bakersfield honky tonk sound at the height of its freight-train rumbling powers. ~ Cub Koda
