Covering the years between 1966-1976, DECADE is a solid overview that shows off the many sides of the always iconoclastic Neil Young. Starting with Young's work in Buffalo Springfield, some of the nuggets include the psychedelic calliope that ... Full Descriptionis "Down To The Wire" and the fuzz guitar/Motown-inspired "Mr. Soul." Throughout these ten years of recordings, Young constantly dug deep, touching on controversial topics be it his CSN&Y masterpiece about the student massacre at Kent State ("Ohio"), compositions dealing with the ups and downs of the drug culture ("Needle And The Damage Done," "Tonight's The Night") or history's dark chapters of racial injustice ("Cortez The Killer," "Southern Man").
Neil Young's choice of accompanists also allowed him to explore many different avenues. Crazy Horse provided the sonic wallop that bore such fruit as "Like A Hurricane," whereas The Stray Gators provided the springboard for more countrycentric numbers like "Heart Of Gold" and "Harvest." Other welcome inclusions are "Star Of Bethlehem" and "Deep Forbidden Lake," from HOMEGROWN, the unreleased sequel to HARVEST. The solid material on this compilation and accompanying liner notes by Neil Young make this an essential part of any record collection.

Decade album
$9.69 Let's get a popular misconception out of the way. The rap about this being one of Young's darkest, most harrowing albums is utter nonsense, perpetuated by critics who spend more time reading each other than listening to the music. TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT is dedicated to Young's guitarist Danny Whitten and roadie Bruce Berry, who died shortly before this recording was made, and the title cut details that very subject, but the darker moments here are leavened by a generous share of self-parodic humor and general Neil Young loopiness.
Sad, tender ballads like "Borrowed Tune," (itself not without humor) rub shoulders with hearty rockers like "Come On Baby Let's Go Downtown." Several tunes find Young and Crazy Horse exploring hard-edged country-rock with their collective tongue stuck firmly in the cheek, as on "Roll Another Number." Young's voice reels sadistically and purposefully out of tune, cutting ...
| | Neil Young Comes A Time CD (1978)
Decade CD music
$9.69 With steel guitars, fiddles and lots of acoustic guitars, this low-key folk-rock album harks back to Young's great AFTER THE GOLD RUSH-HARVEST period, and if it doesn't measure up that's only because of the ridiculously high standards the earlier albums set. Taken by itself, COMES A TIME is a fine collection, anchored by the timeless wonderment of the title song; a cover of Ian & Sylvia's "Four Strong Winds," and the nearly indescribable "Look Out For My Love," which is either a love song, a threat or both.
COMES A TIME also features "Lotta Love," which was released simultaneously by Nicolette Larson and was a major hit for her. Larson doesn't sing on Young's version, but her background vocals distinguish much of the rest of COMES A TIME. Crazy Horse puts in an unusually low-key--but typically warm and ragged--appearance on two songs, "Look Out For My Love" and "Lotta Love."
Live Recording
Recorded at Triiad, Fort Lauderdale, Florida; Columbia, London, England; Wally Heider, Hollywood, California; Woodland & Sound Shop, Nashville, Tennessee; Broken Arrow, Redwood City, California.

| | Neil Young After The Goldrush CD (1970)
Decade music CDs
$9.19 The album continues its collage of styles, from the wistfulness of "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" to song fragments like "Til the Morning Comes" to the transformation of Don Gibson's "Oh Lonesome Me" from canter to ballad. But the crowning achievements are the album's magnificent title track, a vividly drawn portrait of post-'60s melancholy, and the gorgeous, aching "Birds," a swan song heralding emotional departure. Both songs are graced by Nils Lofgren's delicate piano, and stand as two of Young's finest compositions. In a catalogue filled with rock classics, AFTER THE GOLDRUSH still ranks among the best.
AFTER THE GOLDRUSH mixes up the hard rock of EVERYONE KNOWS THIS IS NOWHERE and the folk and country leanings Young pursued with Crosby, Stills ...
| | Neil Young Rust Never Sleeps CD (1979)
Decade songs
$10.59 As far as pure songcraft goes, it's hard to beat this 1979 offering from Young and Crazy Horse. By the end of the '90s, Young, Talbot, Molina and Sampredo had refined their crushing sonic assault to the extent that they could bludgeon the listener with Wagnerian riffs and rhythms (the entropy hymn "Hey Hey, My My") or provide just enough grit to keep Young's ...
| | Neil Young On The Beach CD (1974) Remastered
Decade album
$9.69 After working his way through loss and chaos on the brilliant TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT (recorded in 1973, but not released until 1975), Neil Young deftly exorcised any lingering demons with 1974's ON THE BEACH. The album opens with the saunter of the aptly titled "Walk On," followed by the utterly gorgeous, Wurlitzer-tinged "See the Sky about to Rain."
The set also features a trio of scathing songs--"Revolution Blues," "Vampire Blues," and "Ambulance Blues"--that address issues important to Young, both social and personal. It is good to hear Young back with such bite and vitriol, especially after the broken desperation of TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT. But while ON THE BEACH is edgy and deeply felt, it also manages ...

Decade album
$16.09 Recorded live at the Atlanta Internation Pop Festival, Atlanta, Georgia, July 3 & 4, 1970. Includes liner notes by Kirk West.
The 1970 Atlanta International Pop Festival was one of the first big rock festivals of the decade, beating out the Isle of Wight by over a month. It was also home turf for the Allman Brothers, who were invited to play the opening and closing sets of the three-day event. In retrospect, it's interesting to note how--despite their ...

Neil Young the artist Neil Young has chosen the songs on this album not for their commercial appeal, but to show the breadth and depth of his talents as a writer and singer. Simply a thoroughly enjoyable album for someone listening to Neil for the first time or a lover of great music. What will amaze a listener is the diversity of his talent and his willingness to explore new musical territory. Submitted by paul.arthur (Brisbane, Qld, Australia) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
