The real star of BARE TREES is guitarist/vocalist Danny Kirwan, who contributes the gorgeous guitar instrumental "Sunny Side of Heaven" and "Bare Trees," a funky rocker that was a massive FM radio staple throughout the seventies. It was new guitarist Bob Welch, however, who wrote and sang the modest hit "Sentimental Lady," a haunting, romantic ballad that remains one of Fleetwood Mac's finest moments. Christime McVie's "Spare Me A Little Of Your Love" hints at Fleetwood Mac's future direction. BARE TREES is a rewarding, well-crafted album that stands on its own merits rather than the Fleetwood Mac legend.
Fleetwood Mac's massive pop success often overshadows the group's origins as one of the premier English blues bands of the sixties. Mac's 1972 album, BARE TREES, found the group searching for a new direction, having lost both of their stellar lead guitarists--Peter Green and Jeremy Spencer--to the excesses of the '60s rock lifestyle. Joined by new guitarist/vocalist Bob Welch and bassist John McVie's wife Christine on keyboards and vocals, Fleetwood Mac reinvented itself as a more pop-oriented rock band.

great cd This is a very fine cd except for the last song. A lot of heart went into this recording. If a greatest hit cd of Fleetwood Mac's 1970 to 1974 years was made the first nine cuts would have to be on it.Along with station man,did you ever love me, emerald eyes, hypnotized, miles away, why, heroes are hard to find, angel, bermuda triangle, come a little bit closer. Masterful Work by Danny Kirwan I would have to agree that Danny Kirwan is the real star of this album. It's clearly his work and his overall influence that shaped it. It was the first of the earlier Mac albums I got to know well, and it led me to all their other work between 1967 and 1972. His title track is full of energy and spirit, and is a very "up" song. His guitar work on that one is superb. "Child of Mine" is another favorite, again a very energetic and well-produced song with great guitar work. "Danny's Chant" is fun and funky, and almost primitive sounding. Great Fleetwood drumming there behind Danny. "Sunny Side of Heaven"-- fantastic, beautiful, soulful guitar work here, very pure and clean. And finally, my favorite-- "Dust." This is a song that begins with lyrics from a gorgeous and poignant poem by Rupert Brooke and then takes off from there. It made me cry the first time I heard it and many times since, it is quite simply that beautiful and moving. The vocals are gorgeous, the instrumentation just as exquisitely rendered, the words stunning. All together, a superlative album and well worth any price just for Danny Kirwan's masterful contributions alone! Submitted by Renee (New York, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Early Mac is a good listen I recently got into the Mac's earlier stuff (even though I am old enough to have heard it when it was originally released). I must say that their sound on Bare Trees achieves a perfect mix of elements, from hard and soft rock to blues. Christine McVie adds a little diversity to the mix without being overwhelming, as the McVie/Nicks combo later became in the 80's and beyond. They could've left off the title track though, which is a croaked spoken-word poem or something. Also, the Bob Welch hit Sentimental Lady seems out of place on an album like this, although that is a good song.
All in all, this album is a winner. Submitted by kevtrish (Long Island,NY) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Mid-Fleetwood Mac Good Too Starting with John McVie's photo, right through the "thickly accented" poem at the end, this album is an oft' overlooked treat.
After the "blues" phase and before the popular success of the band--Bare Trees fills the gap with excellence--buy it today! Submitted by doncarona (Pittsburg, KS USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Bare Trees
$10.45 1973 was a busy year for Fleetwood Mac, who continued to ply a mix of California country rock and blues at a time when glam ruled the roost in England. PENGUIN was one of two albums recorded that year and the band's first since parting ways with Danny Kirwan. Replacing him were English guitarist Bob Weston and singer Dave Walker, who the Mac stole from Savoy Brown after an American tour with that band. Due to a fair amount of drunk and disorderly behavior in the studio, Walker's contributions were minimal. He penned a country-flavored number called "The Derelict" and sings lead and plays harmonica on Jr. Walker's "(I'm A) Road Runner."
Despite this slight turmoil, the rest of PENGUIN is a wonderful mixed bag of material. Highlights include the upbeat, steel drum-tinged "Did You Ever Love Me," the ethereal "Night Watch" (featuring an uncredited Peter Green on guitar) and the slide guitar-drenched ...
| | Fleetwood Mac Then Play On CD (1969)
Bare Trees
$9.55 There were 2 different versions of this LP, each with slightly different tracks. The CD contains all tracks from both versions.
Led by singer-guitarist Peter Green, the first version of Fleetwood Mac was one of England's premier bands and possibly the greatest white blues band ever to emerge from the '60s blues revival. 1969's THEN PLAY ON is their best album and Green's pinnacle achievement. Heavily influenced by Otis Rush, Green had an unusually lyrical style for a blues musician, able to draw on flamenco, folk, even classical ...
| | Fleetwood Mac Kiln House CD (1970)
Bare Trees
$10.89 KILN HOUSE was released at a critical juncture for Fleetwood Mac; leader Peter Green had left the band, and guitarist/vocalists Jeremy Spencer and Danny Kirwan were left to pick up the slack. Fortunately, they took the ball and ran with it, taking the opportunity to move beyond the blues-based sound of the group's Green-era work.
American ...
| | Fleetwood Mac Future Games CD (1971)
Bare Trees
$10.39 By this album, Fleetwood Mac had only 2 members from the original line-up of 1967: Mick Fleetwood and John McVie. Danny Kirwan joined in 1968, in time for the group's second album. Christine McVie (nee Perfect) joined in 1970, and Bob Welch joined in Spring 1971 to replace departed guitarist Jeremy Spencer.
Not a Mac album that springs readily to mind, when you consider the multi-billion sellers in the catalogue. This was during their "lost period," when they were neither a boy or a girl. Greeny had long departed and ...

| | No Use For A Name Keep Them Confused CD (2005)
Bare Trees
$6.15 As one of the important early practitioners of California skate punk, No Use for a Name would have every right to simply rest on its laurels, churning out one album of speedy, harmony-infused pop-punk rock after another. Luckily, the band refuses to stop refining its sound. Long-time fans need not worry, of course; KEEP THEM CONFUSED doesn't attempt to reinvent the wheel. There are plenty of high-energy guitars and mosh-worthy beats on display, ...
| | Wackers Hot Wacks CD (1972)
Bare Trees
$10.69 Though the Los Angeles-based Wackers had founded their career on an appealing Beatles-based prototype power pop, their second album finds them reaching farther afield, adding CSNY-style harmonies to their sonic palette in "Do You Know the Reason" and "Time Will Carry On." In addition, there are post-psychedelic outings ...
