Neil Young's second album yielded several of his most enduring hits (including the title tune, "Cowgirl In The Sand," "Cinnamon Girl," and "Down By The River") and firmly established him as a solo artist of the first rank. Though it's impossible to narrow the catalog of Young and Crazy Horse down to one representative document, this is about as close as you're likely to get. This was Young's first collaboration with the Horse, and it's still one of that group's defining recorded moments. As in much of Young's subsequent work, the feeling of despair moves unabated through the album, which runs the emotional gamut from laconically desperate to psychotically desperate. Despite the gloom, the heavy electric riffing on "Cinnamon Girl" and "Cowgirl In the Sand"--two surrealistic odes to an idealized muse--is cathartic and invigorating, easily as riveting as the guitar onslaught of anyone from the Stooges to the Velvet Underground.
Young's rootsy, acoustic side comes to the fore on "Round & Round" and "Running Dry." The homespun quality of these songs doesn't leaven the consuming sense of dread that permeates this album, though. Strangely, this expression of angst and emotional disorder became one of Young's most lastingly popular albums, and "Down By The River," "Cinnamon Girl," and "Cowgirl in the Sand" quickly turned into FM staples.

Neil Young's first collaboration with Crazy Horse is perhaps his best effort overall. It is a fine mixture of mellow acoustic fluff and hard-out rock and roll, perhaps a precursor to the grunge movement of the early 90s. The fact that the album's three most well-known and potent songs..."Cinnamon Girl", "Down By The River" and "Copwgirl In The Sand"... were composed while Young was bed-ridden with the flu makes the end results more impressive and profound. An excellent example of Neil's early sound.

Everyone over the age of 40 should have this album in their collection. The long 9+ minute version of "Down by the River" is worth it. I think this is Young's best to date--really!

Neil and Crazy Horse's first collabration. It features the Horse's original line-up. Talbot on bass, Molina on drums, and the late Danny Whitten on guitar. He died from a heroin overdose in '72. Neil changed their name from The Rockets to Crazy Horse, and the rest is history! The song "Running Dry", is about that. Hard to beleive it was made in '69. A must buy for your ears!

This is probably one of the best albums Young made with his backing band Crazy horse. This is not as mellow as his first album, but it is not quite as heavy and dark as some of the stuff he did during his doom period. The really classic songs here are " Cinnamon girl", "Down by the river" and " Cowgirl in the sand", but the other songs are almost just as good. The title track is one of my favorites and " Running dry" is probably the best song here, it is strange you dont hear it more often. Nothing really sounded like this in 69, this is probably the first grunge lp that was released.

ultimate Neil Young & Crazy Horse album of all time!
If you buy only one Neil Young/Crazy Horse album in your lifetime, this is the one to buy! This one has all the goods: the ultimate grunge sound served up Crazy Horse style, killer opening cut (Cinnamon Girl), excellent title track (Everybody Knows this is Nowhere), two rock guitar anthems (Down by the River, Cowgirl in the Sand), a tune with a more mellow folk sound (Round and Round), a garage country tune (The Losing End), and an eclectic hypnotic mood setting piece (Running Dry). This was my first Neil Young album and I've long since worn out the original copy, but it never grows old. It is a classic that rates in my personal Top 5 favorite albums of all time. It is rocking, spiritual, moving, haunting, and full of depth lyrically and musically al at once. Thats hard to find in one single album with as little as 7 tracks in all! Get this one, you'll treasure it always!
