Recorded on the Japanese tour of 1972, Deep Purple created the most effortless of great live albums. Labouring under the Machine Head tour and with inter-band relationships that saw both Gillan and Glover feuding with the sometimes difficult Blackmore and quitting the band early the following year, the record, for its part, does not suffer from the personnel inconsistencies, the band playing what would become, in retrospect, a greatest hits set. The consistency of the material - 'Child In Time', 'Strange Kind Of Woman', 'Space Truckin" - was, and still is, astounding, matched only by the arch standards of Purple's live performance.
Recorded live Japan from August 15-17, 1972.
Digitally remastered by Steve Hoffman.

Made in Japan! Made of ROCK! Just purchased this cd from cduniverse, I haven't heard this album in a couple of decades... wow. This music smokes from beginning to end. Great way to start an album with Highway Star, great way to end it with Space Truckin'. Favorite tune: Hmmm. hard to choose, they are all good, but here ya' go... Child in Time. Aw, C'Mon To this fan, MIJ is a very good Purple live album. But the "greatest live album ever?" Machine Head was tighter, and a lot less self-indulgent. Hearing MIJ's versions every five minutes on FM radio back then made me appreciate smarter live performances by DP of the same songs - such as on the '74 BBC's King Biscuit Flower Hour. Get MIJ, enjoy the looong versions, overlong noodling solos, and Ian Gillian's screeching-not-singing, but they did do some better elsewhere. Submitted by Nate (Boston, MA) Was This Review Helpful? EL MEJOR DISCO DE LA HISTORIA DEL ROCK. Creatividad, talento, virtuosismo y arte para improvisar son los ingredientes que hacen de éste, el mejor disco de la historia del rock. Submitted by Jorge (Alcoy, Alicante, España) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
An excellent example of a live album! In my opinion this is the best live album I’ve ever heard. The songs sound much better live than the studio versions. It begins with one of their most dynamic songs, "Highway Star". It has two perfect solos, one from keyboard player John Lord and the other from electric guitar player Ritchie Blackmore. "Child in Time" is an emotive piece with a brilliant guitar solo and Gillan's voice is really outstanding. "The Mule" has one of my favourite drum solos created by Ian Paice. In "Strange Kind Of Woman" there's a duel to death between Ian Gillan's voice and Ritchie Blackmore's riffs. Deep Purple is a hard rock band but they can also show their bluesy side in "Lazy". "Space Truckin'" is real improvisation and "Smoke on the Water" you know... Submitted by christian_grierson (Madrid, SPAIN) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | Black Sabbath Master Of Reality CD (1971)
Made In Japan
$9.15 The album's opening track, "Sweet Leaf," a salute to one of the band's favorite smokeable substances, contains one of metal's heaviest guitar riffs, courtesy of Tony Iommi. Another eternal band favorite is the grim, post-nuclear war tale "Children of the Grave." Vocalist Ozzy Osbourne is in fine voice on "After Forever" and "Lord of this World," while the more tranquil "Solitude" and the instrumental Iommi compositions "Embryo" and "Orchid" offer a bit of variety. Though not quite as influential ...
| | Deep Purple Machine Head CD (1972)
Made In Japan
$6.15 A probable contender for one of hard rock's "all-time most influential albums," Deep Purple's MACHINE HEAD has all the markings of a heavy classic. It was here that the band's combination of amped-up blues, progressive instrumental prowess, screaming guitars, and thunderous rhythms was crystallized for the ages, helping to lay the foundation for hard rock and heavy metal throughout the '70s, '80s, and '90s. The lone presence of "Smoke on the Water" immediately elevates the album to essential status. The song became a long-running radio staple, and boasts one of the most instantly recognizable guitar riffs in rock history.
Yet the rest of the album holds up impressively, from the adrenaline-soaked opener ...
| | Black Sabbath Paranoid CD (1971)
Made In Japan
$9.09 PARANOID proved to be Black Sabbath's most focused, consistent, and successful record. Leaving behind the amorphous, extended jams of their debut for focused songs and a more structured sound, Black Sabbath virtually wrote the book on heavy metal with the ominous, unforgettable riffs, thunderous rhythms, and dark themes on this release. There are some up-tempo rockers, the famous title track for one, but for the most part PARANOID oozes along like a bad dream, as on the slinky, creepy opener, "War Pigs," or the lumbering thud of "Iron Man" (which boasts one of the most indelible electric guitar riffs in rock history).
The album's title ...
| | Deep Purple Who Do We Think We Are? CD (1973) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Made In Japan
$10.45 After establishing itself as a hard-rock giant, thanks to endless touring and the release of such milestone records as MACHINE HEAD and IN ROCK, Deep Purple was in a state of turmoil when it went into the studio to record 1972's WHO DO WE THINK WE ARE? Despite all the infighting, the band pulled together long enough to record seven tracks that only bolstered the band's reputation.
The best-known song, "Woman From Tokyo," boasted a riff as memorable as the one that defined "Smoke on the Water" and was later admitted by Ritchie Blackmore to have been cribbed from Eric Clapton's "Cat Squirrel." Although Blackmore's always-impressive riffing stands out on such songs as "Mary Long" and "Place in ...
