Recorded on the Japanese tour of 1972, Deep Purple created the most effortless of great live albums. Labouring under the Machine Head tour and with inter-band relationships that saw both Gillan and Glover feuding with the sometimes difficult Blackmore and quitting the band early the following year, the record, for its part, does not suffer from the personnel inconsistencies, the band playing what would become, in retrospect, a greatest hits set. The consistency of the material - 'Child In Time', 'Strange Kind Of Woman', 'Space Truckin" - was, and still is, astounding, matched only by the arch standards of Purple's live performance.
Recorded live Japan from August 15-17, 1972.
Digitally remastered by Steve Hoffman.

Made in Japan! Made of ROCK! Just purchased this cd from cduniverse, I haven't heard this album in a couple of decades... wow. This music smokes from beginning to end. Great way to start an album with Highway Star, great way to end it with Space Truckin'. Favorite tune: Hmmm. hard to choose, they are all good, but here ya' go... Child in Time. Aw, C'Mon To this fan, MIJ is a very good Purple live album. But the "greatest live album ever?" Machine Head was tighter, and a lot less self-indulgent. Hearing MIJ's versions every five minutes on FM radio back then made me appreciate smarter live performances by DP of the same songs - such as on the '74 BBC's King Biscuit Flower Hour. Get MIJ, enjoy the looong versions, overlong noodling solos, and Ian Gillian's screeching-not-singing, but they did do some better elsewhere. Submitted by Nate (Boston, MA) Was This Review Helpful? EL MEJOR DISCO DE LA HISTORIA DEL ROCK. Creatividad, talento, virtuosismo y arte para improvisar son los ingredientes que hacen de éste, el mejor disco de la historia del rock. Submitted by Jorge (Alcoy, Alicante, España) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
An excellent example of a live album! In my opinion this is the best live album I’ve ever heard. The songs sound much better live than the studio versions. It begins with one of their most dynamic songs, "Highway Star". It has two perfect solos, one from keyboard player John Lord and the other from electric guitar player Ritchie Blackmore. "Child in Time" is an emotive piece with a brilliant guitar solo and Gillan's voice is really outstanding. "The Mule" has one of my favourite drum solos created by Ian Paice. In "Strange Kind Of Woman" there's a duel to death between Ian Gillan's voice and Ritchie Blackmore's riffs. Deep Purple is a hard rock band but they can also show their bluesy side in "Lazy". "Space Truckin'" is real improvisation and "Smoke on the Water" you know... Submitted by christian_grierson (Madrid, SPAIN) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Made In Japan music CDs
$12.15 Goin' Public's music falls into the contemporary jazz/smooth jazz area, being mildly funky and R&B-ish jazz. The musicianship is excellent and the originals are likable, but none of the musicians display an original personality. Guitarist John Valentino has the best spots and shows versatility, sounding like Wes Montgomery one moment and closer to Larry Carlton the next. Overall, this is a relaxing set of superior background music. No chances are taken, but it does create a pleasant atmosphere. ~ Scott Yanow

| | Bunk Johnson Bunk & The New Orleans Revival: 1942-47 CDs (2003) (Import) United Kingdom
Made In Japan songs
$27.85 A valuable core sample of Bunk Johnson's remarkable career as living relic and patriarch of the traditional jazz revitalization movement of the 1940s, Bunk and the New Orleans Revival 1942-1947 contains some two and a quarter hours of austere New Orleans polyphony. This two-for-the-price-of-one package includes authentic street parade jazz, a swell taste of how Johnson sounded filling in for Lu Watters with the Yerba Buena Jazz Band, and two powerful examples of Johnson's brief collaboration with Sidney Bechet. A trio session from 1946 offers a rare opportunity to appreciate Johnson without any other horns in the room, backed only by pianist Don Ewell and drummer Alphonse Steele. This trio's treatment of "In the Gloaming" is very likely among the best recordings old Johnson ever made. Four selections from Johnson's last recording session, made (with no audience in attendance) at Carnegie Hall in 1947, round out a satisfying tribute to this controversial man and his scruffy brand of traditional jazz. While Johnson may be an easy target for critics and disgruntled historians, the music he left behind stands its own ground, unencumbered by numerical rating systems or anybody's specialized opinions. It moves at will according to its own itinerary. The best way to listen is to suspend all preconceptions, opening one's heart to the simple unity of each ensemble. Then you get the feeling there is no need for highfalutin ...

| | Ana da Silva Lighthouse CD (2005)
Made In Japan CD music
$27.95 Debut album from Ana Da Silva, lead-singer of the massively influential early Rough Trade signings The Raincoats who were worshipped by Kurt Cobain & Sonic Youth amongst others.
Most artists with reputations as esteemed as that of Ana da Silva don't wait two and a half decades to put out a solo album. But then, da Silva has never been particularly predictable or traditional. After the Raincoats' first hiatus in 1984, she was perfectly content to largely turn her back on music and concentrate on painting and working in an antique shop, until the band reunited for 1996's Looking in the Shadows (after which the Raincoats disbanded again). This mix of indifference to outside expectations and artistic independence means that da Silva fans don't get to hear new music from her as often as they'd like, but when she does reappear, it's cause for celebration. On the surface, da Silva's eclectic, mostly electronic debut solo album, The Lighthouse, is a far cry from her former band's bristling ...
