A probable contender for one of hard rock's "all-time most influential albums," Deep Purple's MACHINE HEAD has all the markings of a heavy classic. It was here that the band's combination of amped-up blues, progressive instrumental prowess, screaming guitars, and thunderous rhythms was crystallized for the ages, helping to lay the foundation for hard rock and heavy metal throughout the '70s, '80s, and '90s. The lone presence of "Smoke on the Water" immediately elevates the album to essential status. The song became a long-running radio staple, and boasts one of the most instantly recognizable guitar riffs in rock history.
Yet the rest of the album holds up impressively, from the adrenaline-soaked opener "Highway Star," in which organist Jon Lord and guitarist Richie Blackmore trade off dazzling solos, to the churning "Space Truckin'," another riff-driven rocker. Vocalist Ian Gillian, whose dramatic, soaring tenor set the mold for many heavy metal singers to follow, is in fine form here, as are the pyrotechnics of Blackmore and Lord. Everything from the title to the warped group photo on the album cover indicates that MACHINE HEAD will be an exercise in unabashed, brain-melting rock, and that is exactly what it delivers. It still stands in the pantheon of seminal hard rock records.
Recorded in Montreux, Switzerland in December 1971.
Deep Purple: Ian Gillan (vocals); Richie Blackmore (guitar); Jon Lord (keyboards); Roger Glover (bass); Ian Paice (drums).

One of the first (vinal) albums I wore out and had to replace! There is no greater energy than Highway Star! Submitted by aaarcher (White Plains, NY) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Deep Purple’s best studio album. “Highway Star” has the best beginning of all songs I’ve ever heard and it has a magnificent guitar and keyboard solos.
“Lazy” is a perfect instrumental mix of classical, jazz and blues music.
Personally, “Pictures Of Home” is one of my favourites and “Smoke On The Water”…no comment!
In my opinion “Machine Head” is one of the best hard rock albums from the 70’s.

Deep Purple "Just as I remembered them" I'm rebuilding my teen years music collection these days. Deep Purple was one of the major influences on me growing up in Hawaii. I surfed with their music in my head and skateboarded in a half pipe with them blaring out of an over head speaker.
Listening to their music brings it all back!

the great purple Every song is a masterpiece. Blackmore at his best performing. Submitted by paturitzu2006 (Bucharest, Romania) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Veritable classic of rock. I love almost all Deep Purple, but this one is even better than usual. Contains the blistering 'Highway Star', a ground-breaking pre-cursor to speed metal, the enchanting rock of 'Pictures Of Home', the mega-jam 'Lazy', and the humourous abd lovable 'Space Truckin'.
Then, of course, there's 'Smoke On The Water', one of the most utterly overrated tracks in history. I know, I know, it's UNBEARABLY catchy and is a good song, but Deep Purple had so many superior songs. 'Pictures Of Home' for example blows it away completely. But anyways, that little rant is only because 'Smoke' is so dis-proportionately popular to the rest of Purple's (brilliant and so often much better) output and that is somewhat annoying.
Needless to say Machine Head is a stunning achievement of rock, which I felt Purple still topped not much later with the SCORCHING and incredible Burn. Submitted by Tim (Wellington) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | Black Sabbath Paranoid CD (1971)
Machine Head
$9.09 PARANOID proved to be Black Sabbath's most focused, consistent, and successful record. Leaving behind the amorphous, extended jams of their debut for focused songs and a more structured sound, Black Sabbath virtually wrote the book on heavy metal with the ominous, unforgettable riffs, thunderous rhythms, and dark themes on this release. There are some up-tempo rockers, the famous title track for one, but for the most part PARANOID oozes along like a bad dream, as on the slinky, creepy opener, "War Pigs," or the lumbering thud of "Iron Man" (which boasts one of the most indelible electric guitar riffs ...
| | Jimi Hendrix Electric Ladyland CD (1968)
Machine Head
$9.89 Principally recorded at the Record Plant, New York, New York in April and May 1968.
On ELECTRIC LADYLAND Jimi Hendrix stretched and experimented in the studio, going beyond the power-trio format on what would be his last studio album with the Experience. ELECTRIC LADYLAND was revolutionary in its scope and execution. Using New York City's Record Plant as a gateway to free expression, Hendrix traversed an abstract landscape containing compositions as weird and wonderful as "...And The Gods Made Love" and "1983...(A Merman I Should Turn To Be)."
Simultaneously looking forwards and backwards, Hendrix mixed in a song reminiscent of his ...
| | Jimi Hendrix Are You Experienced? CD (1967)
Machine Head
$9.69 This 1997 reissue of ARE YOU EXPERIENCED? is a remastered version that restores the original LP's track order and album artwork. ARE YOU EXPERIENCED? was previously reissued in 1993 (MCA 10893) with new cover art and a new 17-track running order that included all the songs on either the U.S. or U.K. versions of the original LP. That version is now out of print, and has been replaced by this one, on the Experience Hendrix label, which features remastered versions of the same 17 songs, this time in the order they appeared on the original American LP, with the extra tracks added to the end (a separate version was simultaneously released in the U.K., featuring the same songs but in the original British track order). The Experience Hendrix label is controlled by Hendrix's family.
The 1997 reissue also adds a 24-page booklet with previously-unpublished photos, the original LP liner notes and song lyrics.
Recorded in late 1966 and early 1967 at Olympic Studios, London, England.
Jimi Hendrix's debut recording was an instant classic, and is as startling today as when it first hit the streets in 1967. ARE YOU EXPERIENCED? is probably the most rock-oriented of Hendrix's official studio releases, but its influences are incredibly ...
| | Deep Purple Perfect Strangers CD (1984) Remastered
Machine Head
$7.09 Digitally remastered by Suha Ger (Universal Music Group Studios).
In the early '80s, many of the top metal acts of the past had either disbanded or soldiered on despite the loss of founding members. Deep Purple had officially disbanded in 1976, with only two original members present in the final lineup, but by 1984, the classic lineup of vocalist Ian Gillan, guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, bassist Roger Glover, drummer Ian Paice, and keyboardist Jon Lord had reunited. Responsible for such classics as MACHINE HEAD and MADE IN JAPAN, the group was considered amongst metal's elite, and judging from its first comeback album, 1984's PERFECT STRANGERS, DEEP PURPLE hadn't lost ...
| | Deep Purple Who Do We Think We Are? CD (1973) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Machine Head
$10.45 After establishing itself as a hard-rock giant, thanks to endless touring and the release of such milestone records as MACHINE HEAD and IN ROCK, Deep Purple was in a state of turmoil when it went into the studio to record 1972's WHO DO WE THINK WE ARE? Despite all the infighting, the band pulled together long enough to record seven tracks that only bolstered the band's reputation.
The best-known song, "Woman From Tokyo," boasted a riff as memorable as the one that defined "Smoke on the Water" and was later admitted by Ritchie Blackmore to have been cribbed from Eric Clapton's "Cat Squirrel." Although Blackmore's always-impressive riffing stands out on such songs as "Mary Long" and "Place in Line," this album also spotlights how far Jon Lord's contributions on organ went toward defining the band's ...

$14.49 Bursting at the seams with famous guest artists, Jimmy Cliff's Artemis Records debut, BLACK MAGIC, made quite a splash, garnering a Grammy nomination in 2005. Without notable chemistry with the guests such an album could go awry, but given Cliff's creative acumen and Dave Stewart's savvy production, the record is a well-executed affair.
The reggae elder statesman gives an Eddy Grant-like tweak to Kool & the Gang's "(Ooh La, La, La) Let's Go Dancin'," featuring the band itself and a rap by contemporary reggae star Bounty Killer. Cliff turns up the socially conscious vibe via his ethereal collaboration with Sting and Tony Rebel, "People," while "War in Jerusalem" proves to be a crisp, 1970s-era reggae ...
