It's unusual for a decade-defining record to come out in that decade's first year, but that was clearly the case with MOONDANCE. While it would have been one of the finest albums of any decade, it clearly marked a turning point both for Van Morrison and for rock as a whole. Coming after 1968's expansive, acoustic, jazz-inflected ASTRAL WEEKS, MOONDANCE marks a complete about-face: instead of looking inward to the depths of his soul, Van turned his gaze towards sunnier climes, offering up a seamless disc of tightly composed and arranged tunes brimming with warmth and energy.
Here the R&B influence that had been part of Morrison's tool kit since his days fronting Them truly came to the fore at last. "Crazy Love," "Caravan," and "Brand New Day" could have been covered by any great soul singer, even as they redefined "soul" through the filter of Morrison's eclectic sensibilities. An openhearted record full of truly inspirational moments, MOONDANCE is Van at the absolute top of his game, setting the pace for everyone else to follow. Nearly every song here is a stone-cold classic, and MOONDANCE has become embedded in the collective pop consciousness as one of the most important touchstones of its time.

I first took a chance on the LP in 1982 - when I was fully 22 years old, and I finally got around to SIDE 2 when I was about 24. While the first side tracks are much stronger, many other artists would love to have this side 2 as their strong side on their best album. It is that good.
But what you need to know is that there are close to a dozen worthy Van LPs worth buying up to 1985. I'll admit that after that he started to sound a bit too much like a fading, too often off-key wannabe lounge singer, relying on the string section. (Wow, that sounds bad.)
But not from 1968-85.
Combined on this LP are some of the most earthy-feel-good lyrics, best 70's instrumental combo (dig the delicate- to-powerful-horn combos), and seemingly impossible skat/jazz/rock/funk/folk/pop singing...incredibly, you'll eventually think that Moondance (the track) is the oddball here (indeed I believe he lifted the music from a relatively obscure jazz piece)...and go buy these others after...

and while I don't get into his singing much more, nevertheless, he's remained a great song writer Submitted by crysalis (Oro, Ontario,Canada) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 2 of 2 found this helpful.
And It Stoned Me Into The Mystic Moondance kicked off a period of amazing creativity for the master of Dublin soul. There are only two types of songs on this record: good songs and great songs. Submitted by Riff (St. Louis, MO, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 2 of 2 found this helpful.
Incredible It's fascinating how an album that was recorded almost 15 years before I was born can affect me this way, Van Morrison's finest, no doubt about it. Submitted by Nir (Rishon Le-Zion, Israel) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 2 found this helpful.

Moondance
$9.09 Quoted, recommended, and worshipped by the critics for decades, this underground masterpiece has now become part of the establishment. It cries to be listened to without interruption, which may explain why it failed to reach either the UK or US charts. It wanders and weaves, repeating themes and lyrics as if one song, yet we never tire of "gardens wet with rain," "champagne eyes," or the wonder of how Morrison can make a place like Ladbroke Grove seem so hauntingly evocative. This all-acoustic ...

Moondance
$9.25 The dark night of the soul that culminated in ASTRAL WEEKS found its counterpart in Morrison's next two albums, the seminal MOONDANCE and its subsequent sister, HIS BAND & THE STREET CHOIR. Both released in 1970, these latter two albums defined the folk/soul/blues amalgam that would prove to be the foundation of Morrison's music. The photos inside the sleeve reveal Van as country gentleman, looking at home and (dare we say it) happy. This image is furthered by his then-wife Janet Planet's liner notes, which paint a picture of Van as a man reborn.
The music more than bears this out. The tunes here are among the most soulful in Morrison's repertoire. The classic opener "Domino" finds him wailing over a punchy horn section and insistent, percolating rhythms, setting the tone for the rest of the album. Van rocks his way through the R&B-inflected "Blue Money," gets down on the funk workout "I've Been Working," and waxes lyrical on "If I Ever Needed Someone," which seems to be both a gospel ...

Moondance
$6.65 After his '70s excursions into funk, soul and R&B, Morrison closed out the decade by getting back in touch with his Celtic roots, an idea he would eventually explore further on CELTIC HEARBEAT, with the Chieftains. On INTO THE MUSIC, Morrison keys in on the upbeat, celebratory aspects of traditional Irish music, incorporating them into his own tunes. Consequently, this is one of the most joyous-sounding Morrison records since HIS BAND & THE STREET CHOIR.
He had already begun his association with Mark Isham (a key player on Morrison's mellower '80s records) and former James Brown saxophonist Pee Wee Ellis, but Morrison is also assisted here by Ry Cooder (who contributes slide to the aptly named "Full Force Gale") and Robin Williamson of the Incredible String Band, who enhances the aura of Celtic mysticism with his pennywhistle work. This is not to say that INTO THE MUSIC is some Celtic trad workout, just that the folk element is mixed in along with Morrison's usual grab bag of rock, pop, blues and undeniable soul.
One of Morrison's best loved albums. It was universally praised by critics at the time of it's release, following on the renaissance trail blazed by "Wavelength". Lead off by the hit singles "Bright Side Of The Road" and "Full Force Gale", Morrison was reinvigorated and expanded his touring ensemble, with ...
| | Jimi Hendrix Are You Experienced? CD (1967)
Moondance
$9.69 This 1997 reissue of ARE YOU EXPERIENCED? is a remastered version that restores the original LP's track order and album artwork. ARE YOU EXPERIENCED? was previously reissued in 1993 (MCA 10893) with new cover art and a new 17-track running order that included all the songs on either the U.S. or U.K. versions of the original LP. That version is now out of print, and has been replaced by this one, on the Experience Hendrix label, which features remastered versions of the same 17 songs, this time in the order they appeared on the original American LP, with the extra tracks added to the end (a separate version was simultaneously released in the U.K., featuring the same songs but in the original British track order). The Experience Hendrix label is controlled by Hendrix's family.
The 1997 reissue also adds a 24-page booklet with previously-unpublished photos, the original LP liner notes and song lyrics.
Recorded in late 1966 and early 1967 at Olympic Studios, London, England.
Jimi Hendrix's debut recording was an instant classic, and is as startling today as when it first hit the streets in 1967. ARE YOU EXPERIENCED? is probably the most rock-oriented of Hendrix's official studio releases, but its influences are incredibly diverse. "Third Stone From The Sun" recalls the supple octaves of jazz guitarist Wes Montgomery; the churning Afro-Cuban polyrhythms of "Manic Depression" evoke John Coltrane and Elvin Jones; "I Don't Live Today" employs ritualistic Native American drumbeats; and the ...

$15.65 ABBEY ROAD, recorded in the summer of 1969, was the last album recorded by the Beatles (LET IT BE was released in 1970, but recorded in early '69).
After the laborious disorganization and infighting that characterized early 1969's LET IT BE sessions (as famously captured on film), the fractious four were willing to ...

Moondance
$19.59 "Superbeast" was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance.
From the dark and twistedly clever mind of Rob Zombie, HELLBILLY DELUXE is an interesting concoction of industrial metal and hard rock. Throw in B-movie obsessions, brilliant, comic book-type art and fantasy-derived lyrics and you'll just begin to scratch the surface of what makes Rob Zombie tick. A throw back to the days of classic album cover art, HELLBILLY DELUXE contains a 24-page CD booklet with drawings and artwork from Zombie. "I grew up in the heyday of cool record packaging. Now, you open the record and you get nothing. I always feel cheated," said Zombie. Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee makes an appearance on two songs ("Resurrection Joe" and "Meet the Creeper"). Other tracks that show Zombie's mastery of shock-rock are "Superbeast," "Demonoid Phenomenon" and "What ...
