While Black Sabbath remained one of heavy metal's top concert draws throughout the late '70s, the band's albums of the era proved to not be on par with its earlier work. This creative weakness was what caused vocalist Ozzy Osbourne to split from the band in 1979 to launch a highly successful solo career. Sabbath used the opportunity to refocus its direction, eventually replacing the group's batty frontman with ex-Rainbow member Ronnie James Dio. The new line-up's first album, 1980's HEAVEN AND HELL, proved to be Black Sabbath's most successful (both commercially and artistically) in a long time. The opening number, "Neon Knights," remains one of Sabbath's most ferocious, while "Children of the Sea" alternates between dark, brooding metal and a gentle melodicism that's stressed even further on "Lady Evil" and "Die Young."
Recorded at Criteria Recording Studios, Miami, Florida and Studio Ferber, Paris, France.
Black Sabbath: Ronnie James Dio (vocals); Tony Iommi (guitar); Geezer Butler (bass); Bill Ward (drums).
Additional personnel: Geoff Nicholls (keyboards).

| Heaven And Hell Music Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews The best version of Black Sabbath! The music is so clean and crisp. Ronnie James Dio is by far a more talented vocalist the Ozzie. The best thing that ever happened to Black Sabbath was the joining of Dio in my opinion. A very good Black Sabbath Release Overall, a very strong release from Black Sabbath with Dio. Obviously, very different from the earlier years. Unfortunately, the recording is below average. A quality digital remaster would probably help. Submitted by a reviewer (Dallas, Texas, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 2 found this helpful.
The best album they ever recorded! In this album Black Sabbath has got the mix perfect. Heaven and hell has got everything a good album needs. The guitars are set up just right, the sound is amazing, i can't get over how good it is! It's a real 'make you wanna get up and dance' album. Well done boys! The ultimate heavy metal album! This is it,all the elements of a great metal album.Great tunes, the powerful and melodic vocals of Dio,Iommi's crushing guitar tones, with Butler and Ward serving up a solid foundation. The last track 'lonely is the word',in my opinion,is the best slow metal tune of all time. One of the best sounding metal albums in my collection."Hand your hand, and take my hand,it's the only road i know.Yeah, lonely is the word.." Heaven And Hell
$11.99 With most contemporary country artists, you could guarantee that a song called "American Ride" would be a slice of jingoism, but Toby Keith isn't like most country singers. His "American Ride" casts a cynical eye at desperate housewives and wannabe pop stars, not celebrating down-home values but wondering where we're all headed on this American Ride at the end of the 2000s, a sentiment not all that far removed from some of Keith's previous social commentary, which makes it a mild surprise that it is the only song here that doesn't come from his own pen. As superb and striking as it is, it's not necessarily a good keystone for the rest of the record, which does have a few tougher numbers that pick up on the lean, mean vibe of 2008's ...

Heaven And Hell
$14.05 In the 21st century, metal is full of bands that favor brutality for the sake of brutality -- bands that live for sensory assault and believe that bombast is its own reward. Such bands (which can be found in anything from death metal/black metal to metalcore to alternative metal) have their limitations, but they can be exhilarating if one has a taste for the extreme. Nonetheless, there's still something to be said for more melodic metal bands, and melody is a high priority on ...

| | Shocker Up Your Ass Tray: The Full Length CD (2003)
Heaven And Hell
$12.05 Up Your Ass Tray is the debut of The Shocker. That's the new combo from ex- L7-er Jennifer Finch, and its music is as dirty as the moniker suggests. What's 'the shocker,' you say? Well, if you have to ask, you probably don't need to hear this record. After a title track of sorts, the album really kicks into gear with "My Life as a Plumber." It is about fixing leaky pipes, but not that kind. "If this pressure is more than I can bear/ I'm gonna flush that man right out of my hair," lead shouter Finch snarls, dragging her nails right into the crunchy chord changes and slithering organ of the chorus. And choruses are where it's at for The Shocker. Full of screeching lead guitar lines and built around lurid catch phrases like "Bad Brain Good Head," the band's originals ring with a sleazy, slutty grace that's as satisfying as the crunch of noses under a boot. It's conventional punk revivalism with a smarmy L.A. twinge (at times recalling X and Social Distortion). But in this day and age, isn't it better to see a band hustling the same old riffs with attitude instead of hype? Ass Tray is essentially an EP, since the band's punk'd cover of "Angel of the Morning" probably should have been left as a live nugget, and "Good Head Again" is nothing more than a faux Nick Cave reading of the ...
