Live Recording
ZZ Top: Billy Gibbons (vocals, guitar); Dusty Hill (vocals, bass); Frank Beard (drums). Also available with DEGUELLO on 1 cassette, and as part of the ZZ Top 6 pack. All tracks have been digitally remastered. El Loco follows through on the streamlined, jet-engine boogie rock of Degüello, but kicking all the ingredients up a notch. That means that the grooves are getting a little slicker, while the jokes are getting a little sillier, a little raunchier. The double entendres on "Tube Snake Boogie" and "Pearl Necklace" are barely disguised, while much of the record plays as flat-out goofy party rock. Not necessarily a bad thing, but much of it is a little too obvious to be totally winning. Still, the most telling thing about El Loco may be the rhythm of "Pearl Necklace," its biggest single and best song, which clearly points the way to the new wave blues-rock of Eliminator. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine For 1981's EL LOCO ZZ Top's first album of the '80s, the trio decided to streamline its gritty blues rock sound somewhat and focus on hooks. While it would take this approach a step further on its next release, the monster crossover hit ELIMINATOR, EL LOCO was ZZ Top's last album before entering its synth-heavy phase. Its Texas blues trademark sound can still be detected beneath the studio enhanced sheen. The best known track remains the X-rated uptempo ditty "Pearl Necklace," as well as the rolling "Tube Snake Boogie," and the surprisingly new wave sounds of "Groovy Little Hippie Pad."
El Loco Music Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) Down& dirty!! The last great ZZ TOP album is excellent before their change-over to pop music & MTV videos. El Loco does display what would be explored further on Eliminator but also contains the Texas sound the early fans had come to know and love.
El Loco makes a satisfying book-end to ZZ TOP's FIRST ALBUM and is quite fun to listen to. Highly recommended!!

Hard to classify "El loco" is an album I've always had mixed feelings about, and this I think is a reflection of how the band actually were at the time. After the great blues/rock masterpiece of "Deguello" in 1979, ZZ Top produce "El loco" in 1981, and you can hear that they're trying to take their sound into a new direction, but they still want to hold on to their blues/rock/boogie roots. "El loco" is a strange album - at times it boogies well ("Tube Snake Boogie" and "Party on the patio" are good examples of this) and at times it rocks (check out "I wanna drive you home" and "Don't Tease me" - they're excellent rockers). But then it has tracks like "Leila" and "It's hard" which really are AM radio friendly pop songs; and this is a sign of things to come...fast forward to 1985 and ZZ Top's "Afterburner", the album where ZZ Top abandon their blues/rock/boogie completely and move to pop and dance. "El loco" uncomfortably sits on the verge between these 2 points, unable to make up its mind as to whether it continues the 1970s raw ZZ Top style or becomes commercial 1980s pop. Superb Album This is a superb album if you're a ZZ Top fan like me. Tube Snake Boogie and Pearl Necklace are the well known and great songs but I love the song Party on the Patio. Leila is a nice, rhythmic ballad and Heaven, Hell or Houston is groovy. Submitted by Esther (Vancouver, B. C., Canada) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Nice I find this album is an underrated album that has songs like "I wanna drive you home" my fave ZZ TOP song "Leila" "Tube snake boogie" "It's so hard" etc. that sound like songs from teh 50's. It's sought of a 50''s/60's tribute. Pearl Neckalce and Groooovy soudn like late 60's music tho. Submitted by Tnahpellee (Australia) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
The Last Great ZZ Top Album EL LOCO is the last great ZZ Top album before the band dove full-throttle into synthesizers and lost their soul. This album is a must-own. Submitted by Adam (Suffern NY USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No This review is for a different format.

El Loco
$6.09 ZZ Top: Billy Gibbons (vocals, guitar); Dusty Hill (vocals, bass); Frank "Rube" Beard (drums). ZZ Top's First Album may not be perfectly polished, but it does establish their sound, attitude, and quirks. Simply put, it's a dirty little blues-rock record, filled with fuzzy guitars, barrelhouse rhythms, dirty jokes, and Texan slang. They have a good, ballsy sound that hits at gut level, and if the record's not entirely satisfying, it's because they're still learning how to craft records -- which means that they're still learning pacing as much as they're learning how to assemble a set of indelible material. Too much of this record glides by on its sound, without offering any true substance, but the tracks that really work -- "(Somebody Else Been) Shaking Your Tree," "Backdoor Love Affair," "Brown Sugar," and ...
| | ZZ Top Rio Grande Mud CD
El Loco
$7.29 ZZ Top: Billy Gibbons (vocals, guitar, harmonica); Dusty Hill (vocals, bass); Frank Beard (drums). Also available as part of the ZZ Top 6 Pack. All tracks have been digitally remastered. With their second album, Rio Grande Mud, ZZ Top uses the sound they sketched out on their debut as a blueprint, yet they tweak it in slight but important ways. The first difference is the heavier, more powerful sound, turning the boogie guitars into a locomotive force. There are slight production flares that date this as a 1972 record, but for the most part, this is a straight-ahead, dirty blues-rock difference. Essentially like the first album, then. That's where the second difference comes in -- they have a much better set of songs this time around, highlighted by ...
| | ZZ Top Tejas CD (1976)
El Loco
$5.99 ZZ Top: Billy Gibbons (vocals, guitar, fiddle, harmonica); Dusty Hill (vocals, bass); Frank Beard (drums). TEJAS was accompanied by the year-long "World Texas Tour," a huge multi-media show that included live cattle on stage with the band. The widely reported tour broke ticket sale and attendance records. Drained by the tour, and unhappy with the support of their record label (London), they took a three-year break. They negotiated a switch to Warner Brothers, who put out their next album (DEGUELLO), and also bought their back catalog for re-issue. Also available as part of the ZZ Top 6 pack. ZZ Top was riding high in the mid-'70s on the strength of Tres Hombres and Fandango, but they were starting to run out of steam by 1977's Tejas. Its predecessor was padded with a live side, but even if it was close to padding, it was still enjoyable. Tejas, despite sounding pretty good, is just forgettable. ...

$5.95 1979 Classic With 'Cheap Sunglasses' & 'I Thank You'. Currently Out Of Print In The USA.
ZZ Top: Billy Gibbons (vocals, guitar, baritone saxophone); Dusty Hill (vocals, tenor saxophone, bass); Frank Beard (alto saxophone, drums, percussion). ZZ Top returned after an extended layoff in late 1979 with Degüello, their best album since 1973's Tres Hombres. During their time off, ZZ Top didn't change much -- hell, their sound never really changed ...

El Loco
$8.99 ZZ Top: Bill F. Gibbons (vocals, guitar); Dusty Hill (vocals, bass); Frank Beard (drums). Recorded at Foam Box Recordings, H-Town, Texas. Personnel: Billy Gibbons (vocals, guitar); Dusty Hill (vocals); Frank Beard (drums). Audio Mixer: Joe Hardy. Recording information: Foam Box Recordings, H-Town, TX. Photographer: Mike Waring. Ever since ZZ Top signed with RCA, they fitfully tried to break free of the synthesized blues that once was their savior but quickly became a straitjacket. Like any addict, it was hard for them to quit that processed, sequenced sound cold turkey, so they weaned themselves off the robo-boogie, sometimes relapsing and adding too many synths to mix, other times breaking loose with some credible ...

$16.45 TroikaOver a year ago, Ryan Hunt, Jennifer Jenkins and I started working on this massive project. In the recording studio (Frequency Studio) that Jen and I built together, we started collecting ideas for a recording that would express all of our eclectic styles and individual talents. We spent months experimenting with new sounds and new ways of presenting the material that we chose. Although there were many times when we wanted to tear our hair out when ideas that we wanted desperately to work crashed and burned, the majority of the experience was amazingly creative and productive. I can't imagine undertaking this project without the two of them. Our hours and hours of time together formed a musical and personal bond that cannot be broken. We often commented about how our best ideas seemed to pour out in our studio, and how astonishing it was that things seemed to work out for the good of this project. It seemed as though it was really supposed to happen, and now, it has. All of the tracks on this album were arranged by all three of us. Some were created by one more than the other, but the final product always included all three. And, five of the tracks are written by Ryan. His amazing sense of lyrics and musical personality drew me immediately to his talent the first time I met him. With his original music and arranging skills, and Jen's incomparable ear, musical genius and original ideas, we came up with a diverse sound that we hope you will enjoy. The album is beautifully packaged in three panel "digipack" with gorgeous original artwork by Veijo Vilva specifically designed for ...
