On songs like, "Conversation" and the title cut, Mitchell's lyrics begin to turn toward to the quirky, personal poetry of interior landscapes, focusing with a writer's eye on scene, detail, and the dynamics of human relationships. Her instrumental palette is broadened too, with colorful, textured arrangements that make greater use of piano, as well as strings, reeds, electric keyboards, and percussion. Some songs, like the sweet, chiming "The Circle Game," seem a bit naïve, but these are counterbalanced with darker songs like "The Arrangement," a stark ballad. In all, LADIES OF THE CANYON was Mitchell's first classic album, one that helped pave the way for its watershed successor, BLUE.
Joni Mitchell's third release found her moving away from the wistful folk of her debut and CLOUDS, branching out into the progressive pop and jazz elements that would define her best work. The bright, poppy "Big Yellow Taxi," the album's single, is here, as is her epoch-defining "Woodstock," a soulful, stirring song about the 1969 rock festival that was later covered by Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young. But the material on LADIES OF THE CANYON is uniformly strong, demonstrating the mature style and vision that made her one of the leading voices of the '70s.

It was a long time before I gave up trying to replace my old 'Ladies of the Canyon' LP, which had long since become an oven-heated ashtray. Feeling it was a bit girly for a Brit Rock musician, I had always muttered something about 'soppy girlfriend'.
I couldn't believe how easy it was to find a copy with cduni, when I finally twigged I could maybe find a copy online. Shows you how often I'd done this before; it never OCCURRED to me I could get it on CD. But there it was in my mailbox here in sunny Aussie. And there it is playing in the background now. One of the few late 60's early 70's albums to not sound quaint. Bloody good reproduction of a fascinating artiste peaking early like Mr Dylan.
Get a copy and find out why Ms Mitchell was every bit as seminal for female singer/songwriters as was Bobbie D for us blokes. Cheers, Kerrin Edwards (yes,'THE' Kerrin Edwards)

Altough I´m 18 years old, I love this album. Joni is not just for oldies. Her lyrics are great, just like her voice and her music. Anyway, this is not my favourite Mitchell´s album.

Joni Mitchell set a hi-bar standard with this album that has never been equalled, nor will it ever. These songs are a script for the mind's eye. Close your eyes and you can grasp little movies from every song. A total emotion filled package of beauty through and through. Modern day artists with names like Sarah, Jewel, Sheryl, Melissa, Tori, & Alannis need not apply. You will never be this good.

This recording has saved my life on many occasions. Never before have I heard such a beautifully soothing peace of art in all my life! Her voice on this record is beautiful and the arrangements are graceful, just sit back close your eyes and relax to the best peace of music ever made.
Let me put it this way, I'm a young man who doesn't always find his way down easy street but when things get to hard, I can always rely on "The Lady of the Canyon" to pick this "Blue Boy" up in a "Big Yellow Taxi" and take me straight to "Morning Morgantown" "For Free". I can't say enough about this album! I love it and will listen to it until die of natural causes.

The Phoenix Album should come with tokens for a black light, lava lamp, and free pass to a Warhol exhibit, but it doesn't, and really there's no need for these accouterments, as the Warlocks magically conjure up the entire '60s experience from the power of their music alone. Their talisman is the Velvet Underground, and yes, listeners have been here before, with the likes of the Jesus & Mary Chain and Sonic Youth, but the Warlocks are truer to the soul of the Velvets than either of those bands. Like them, the Warlocks rummage through music's past and present for inspiration, then shape them in entirely new ways so listeners can experience the sounds in an entirely new light. This is evident from the opening track, "Shake the Dope Out," ripped straight from "Sister Ray" but remodeled into an almost poppy number via the vocal harmonies and Ray Manzarek-ish keyboards. They're equally adept at connecting the dots down the years and across genres -- the raincoated angst of "Moving and Shaking" and the Velvets/Magazine/Sisters of Mercy fusion of "Cosmic Letdown," weaving together the many musical threads of the '60s into a tapestry that encompasses the entire decade. The octet delights in this kind of subterfuge, and even the band's two drummers get into the act. On "Stockman Blues," they lay down a punchy pattern reminiscent of the kind that brassy beehived blondes stripped to in the '60s. But overhead, the rest of the group slams down an aggressive roar of noise that builds in tension until the beauties are down to their bikinis, reach behind the curtains to pull out their bushwhackers, and slaughter the audience. One can read all sorts of stories into the music; like billowing clouds, the Warlocks' sound encourages free association and flights of fancy, from battle cries of rebellion to carefree moments, psychedelic splattered trips to junkie-esque desperation. Singer/multi-instrumentalist Bobby Hecksher has the amazing ability to sound like a whining crack addict on one song, a tripped-out doper on the next, and the sweetest of pop singers a few tracks later.
