(1 Customer Review)
Due to its release six months before Violator appeared, not to mention the fact that Depeche's American fan base was reaching critical mass, the EP release of "Personal Jesus" became the biggest selling 12" single in Warner Bros.' history up to that point. It's not too hard to see why -- outrageously but perfectly fusing the aesthetics of clinical synth sheen, funky breakbeats courtesy of stomping on travel cases and looping the results, and bluesy, twangy guitar, it's an instant classic from the band. Gore's lyric was one of his simplest ever -- apparently inspired by Priscilla Presley's depiction of her life with Elvis -- but was delivered by Gahan with strutting, sly panache and power. Besides the killer single mix that also surfaced on the near-unavoidable video, four others ended up on the full-CD version of the EP. Legendary disco figure Francois Kevorkian handled three of these total -- the single mix, the "Holier Than Thou Approach," and the preacher-sampling, often quite dramatic "Pump" mix. Said "Holier Than Thou Approach" extended the overall feeling of the song but had a lot of extra fun with the massive, stomping drums; most of it later surfaced as the final Violator album take. Flood's "Telephone Stomp" mix goes right ahead and includes a phone while a surprising, fun bonus was the original acoustic demo of the song, as performed by Gore on his own -- low key, bluesy, and quite successful. One other song turned up, "Dangerous," appearing in three separate versions and featuring a great Gahan vocal. The original take is a nicely threatening, snaky number, Daniel Miller's "Hazchemix" cranks up the straight-ahead techno approach well, while Flood's "Sensual" mix lives up to its name with its tense, extended groove. ~ Ned Raggett

Personal Jesus album
$6.95 There was a year's delay before this film, which concerns the mysterious death of a fictional '60s rock star, took off via video and cable TV; but when it did, the soundtrack album, featuring such songs as "On the Dark Side" and "Tender Years," by John Cafferty And The Beaver Brown Band, took off with it. To most, the music sounded like Bruce Springsteen clones, but it was appealing nonetheless. ~ William Ruhlmann

| | Hard To Find 45S, Vol. 12: 60S And 70S Pop Classics CD (2010)
Personal Jesus CD music
$13.59 The 19 singles collected on this set of 1960s and 1970s pop hits are hardly heavy or experimental, but are designed instead for comfortable appeal, and each, in its own way, freezes its era perhaps more clearly than the more artistic and exploratory work that went on in the recording studios of the day -- no doubt because these songs were heard constantly on the radio. Like them or not, there are some serious ear worms here, like Wayne Fontana & the Mindbenders' "Game of Love," Jay & the Techniques' Motown-like "Apple, Peaches, Pumpkin Pie," the Sandpipers' wistful "Come Saturday Morning," the group Smith's toughened-up version of the Shirelles' "Baby It's You," King Harvest's "Dancing in the Moonlight," and Andy Gibb's "I Just Want to Be Your Everything," and each of these is likely to get one singing along, like it or not. Some songs we love. Some songs love us. These are examples of the latter. They worm their way in there. They don't let go easily. ~ Steve Leggett

| | Butch Walker I Liked It Better When You Had No Heart CD (2010)
Personal Jesus music CDs
$11.80 The day that Butch Walker runs out of melodies will be a dark day indeed, but he shows little sign of decline on his fifth solo effort. Like Sycamore Meadows, this album finds the 40-year-old Walker in a contemplative, autobiographical mood, referencing everything from his hair metal past to his Los Angeles home. It's ostensibly a breakup record, too, with a rather despondent title and another sad, Southern-styled ballad, "Don't You Think Someone Should Take You Home," that sounds like the companion piece to 2008's "Here Comes The." If Walker is heartbroken, though, he doesn't show it during some of the album's best songs, from the roots rocker "Trash Day" to the shuffling "Temporary Title." Bad feelings also don't prevent him from ornamenting the album with some of his best production to date. A sweeping, Phil Spector-styled string section opens "Pretty Melody," swells of vocal harmony pop up throughout "Stripped Down Version," and violins dart around the melody in "House of Cards." Michael Trent receives co-writing credits for roughly half of these tracks, but I Liked It Better When You Had No Heart is a Butch Walker album through ...

Personal Jesus album
$14.79 A lot happened to Field Music between the release of 2007's Tones of Town and 2010's Field Music (Measure). Most importantly, the brothers Brewis (David and Peter) decided to put the band on hiatus and start working on their own projects, the School of Language for David, The Week That Was for Peter. Both groups released excellent albums that had all the hallmarks of the Field Music sound (brainy arrangements, crisp playing, excellent songs) but were also slightly different from each other. The School of Language took an artier, more experimental approach, while the Week That Was made big, shiny pop music. In 2009, the brothers decided to regroup and start releasing music as Field Music again. The resulting double-album-length Measure is a seamless blend of the two brother's styles that will thrill fans of the group's previous work. Basically, the album sounds like it picks up exactly where Tones of Town left off, only the group sounds more confident and assured. The arrangements are more precise (which didn't seem possible), the vocal harmonies are richer, and the quality of the songs is so high that it's almost a problem. On most good albums, the handful of memorable songs jump out at you right away, here there are so many songs at the same high level that they start to wash over you after awhile. The band could have broken Measure into two excellent records instead of one super-long, super-good album. That being said, there is enough variation from song to song to keep listeners engaged; plenty of thoughtful, almost heavy ballads to balance the jumpy, uptempo tracks, lots of different instrumentation in the arrangements, and an assortment of moods from quiet melancholy to slightly ...
| | Stevie Ray Vaughan Texas Flood CD (1983)
Personal Jesus CD music
$6.75 This 1999 reissue contains five bonus tracks not on the original release.
Principally recorded at Down Town Studio, Los Angeles, California and Riverside Sound, Austin, Texas. Live tracks recorded at The Palace, Hollywood, California on September 23, 1983. Originally released on Epic (38734). Includes liner notes by Michael Ventura.
This is a Super Audio CD playable only on Super Audio CD players.
Quite possibly the only electric blues/rock guitarist to come near rivalling Jimi Hendrix, Vaughan, who, like Hendrix, died tragically, was so good he was ridiculous. He was lacking in really good material, and his own compositions were mainly guitar workouts, such as "Rude Mood," although he shows great feeling on the instrumental "Lenny." He is much more comfortable singing non-originals, and on this album he covers Buddy Guy's "Mary Had A Little Lamb" and Howlin Wolf's "Tell Me," but the listener is still waiting for the bit where the guitar solo comes in. Poor Double Trouble barely get a look in.
