Released in January 1983, LIVE EVIL was competing against Ozzy Osbourne's live SPEAK OF THE DEVIL for the dominant share of Black Sabbath fans' favor. Both albums did fairly well, and EVIL features Ozzy's successor Ronnie James Dio on vocals. ...    Full Description

4 stars End Of An Era
This 2-CD set marked the end of the real Black Sabbath, 1970 - 1982. The band had not only survived Ozzy Osbourne's departure in 1979, but they even managed to expand their musical horizons with new singer Ronnie James Dio. Live Evil remains a good encapsulation of Sabbath's early 1980s era with Dio. It's somewhat slick, but most live shows were in those days! And while it's not as magical as the two studio albums recorded with Dio, it does exude the same mystical atmosphere. Dio left Sabbath shortly before Live Evil was released in January 1983, and the band later went through some ill-advised personnel changes that effectively killed the aura of mystery and mystique that was so integral to Sabbath's appeal. This album is a good reminder of what Black Sabbath really was - and probably never will be again.

3 stars GOOD, BUT NOT ESSENTIAL
i first got this on vinyl in early 1983,and looking back on it,this does not really sound like a live album. It does not have as much raw energy, and sounds too polished. It seems almost sacreligious that Dio would be singing '70's Black Sabbath songs!?

3 stars NO GREAT.
I am a real fan of Black Sabbath and Ronnie James Dio but this albumn no is great, however there are powerful live performances,a great voice, great songs but a worst production by Tony Iommi. For me,the albumn is a good reminder of what Black Sabbath really was.

3 stars Not bad for being post-Ozzy.
I am a fan of the Ozzy era Black Sabbath, but I must admit that the Dio era is not bad at all. I actually prefer Dio when he was in Rainbow. I have listened to this album along with "Heaven And Hell" and "Mob Rules" and they are without a doubt the last three great Sabbath albums. I do agree with the "End of an era" review. Sabbath did in fact survive the departure of Ozzy Osbourne but it did not survive the departure of Ronnie James Dio. "Live Evil" marks the real end. Anything post Dio sucks, especially "Born Again".

Live Evil album
CD $19.34  SALE 4.4 stars Top 10
Special Edition CD includes the full album, a CD of instrumental mixes of the album and a CD of six cover songs. Dream Theater's tenth long-player is about as dense and challenging as any album in the band's discography and emphasizes not only the virtuoso members' stupefying musicianship, but also their most aggressive and thoroughly metallic songwriting tendencies. The sixteen-minute opener "A Nightmare to Remember" quickly establishes this agenda via frequently thrash-paced staccato riffing, some of John Petrucci's most blistering guitar solos ever, and the return of drummer Mike Portnoy's syncopated growls, which provide contrast for singer James LaBrie's soaring melodic elegance. "The Count of Tuscany" is a heady prog-metal magnum opus brimming with more ideas, notes, and time changes over 19 minutes than most bands bother with over a ten album career. In fact, "Whither," a tender ballad and mere babe at five minutes in length, is the ...

Finnish power-metal stalwarts Stratovarius have been kicking around since the 1980s, undergoing many personnel changes along the way, but their twelfth album, POLARIS, is the first without guitarist Timo Tolkki, who left the band before they embarked on this project. Other than that, things seem to be status quo in Stratovariusland, as the album delivers the kind of bold, anthemic ...

As the drums kick into the fierce opener "Tarot Woman," it's obvious that RISING delivers directly to your door. It is the band's second release, and a vast improvement over RICHIE BLACKMORE'S RAINBOW. With a revamped lineup that sounds like it had been touring together for years, the album takes no prisoners. "Starstruck" is a classic groove reminiscent of guitarist Blackmore's ex-band Deep Purple. Blackmore replaced everyone from the first album's lineup except vocalist Ronnie Dio with Jimmy Bain (bass), Tony Carey (keyboards), and Cozy Powell (drums). Dio shows what he's got with a stellar performance on "Do You Close Your Eyes." "Stargazer" is the ...

"Metropolis Part I," a track featured on Dream Theater's breakthrough, IMAGES AND WORDS, left many progressive rock enthusiasts with what seemed like another unfinished chapter in a story never to be completed. Seven years and five albums later, Dream Theater returned to its majestic beginnings with METROPOLIS PART II--SCENES FROM A MEMORY. Keyboard virtuoso Jordan Rudess, who was a logical replacement for Derek Sherinian, revitalized the band's sound. Rudess's collaboration with guitarist John Petrucci and drummer Mike Portnoy stole the attention of Dream Theater fans in the instrumental project, LIQUID TENSION EXPERIMENT. METROPOLIS PART II is an epic concept album that makes a powerful artistic statement. The band is impressive in its ability to weave a suite of pieces together that share a common thread of recurring musical and lyrical themes similar to those first presented in "Metropolis I." The heart of the tale is revealed in "Fatal Tragedy," which centers on a murder mystery. The main character, Victoria Page, sees the man she once loved turning evil and in refusing his affections, she pays with her life. The lyrical ...

A kind of hair-metal supergroup comprised of Motley Crue bassist/songwriter Nikki Sixx, L.A. Guns/Guns 'N' Roses founder Tracii Guns, and a pair of longtime Los Angeles scenesters, Brides Of Destruction combines rough-and-ready retro hard rock with a more modern, grunge/punk-leaning approach. After just a few songs, it's clear that HERE COMES THE BRIDES is an unique hybrid. Full of trashy guitar and trashier drums, the album summons the ghosts of Black Flag, the Sex Pistols, and the Dead Kennedys, but sends them scurrying back to their ...
