Released in January 1983, LIVE EVIL was competing against Ozzy Osbourne's live SPEAK OF THE DEVIL for the dominant share of Black Sabbath fans' favor. Both albums did fairly well, and EVIL features Ozzy's successor Ronnie James Dio on vocals. Recorded in Seattle, San Antonio, and Dallas on the Mob Rules tour, excellent production only enhances these powerful live performances.

With two Dio-era albums under their belt, Sabbath opens with "E5150" and "Neon Knights" for a rousing start. Then Dio tackles "N.I.B.," the first of many Ozzy classics. Longtime Sabbath fans were curious as to how the former Rainbow belter would handle "Black Sabbath," "War Pigs" and "Iron Man." Quite well, as it turns out. Dio's vocal style is drastically different from Ozzy's, but his range and power sustain the songs formidably. While "Heaven And Hell" and "Children of the Sea" are two of the finer Dio-era Sabbath songs, "Paranoid" and "Children Of The Grave" drive the point home. Although Black Sabbath mark II did not last long, Dio did return to front the band 10 years later. LIVE EVIL is an excellent recording from a classic lineup.

Recorded live in Seattle, Washington, San Antonio, Texas and Dallas, Texas.

Black Sabbath: Ronnie James Dio (vocals); Tony Iommi (guitar); Geezer Butler (bass); Vinnie Appice (drums).

4 stars End Of An Era
This 2-CD set marked the end of the real Black Sabbath, 1970 - 1982. The band had not only survived Ozzy Osbourne's departure in 1979, but they even managed to expand their musical horizons with new singer Ronnie James Dio. Live Evil remains a good encapsulation of Sabbath's early 1980s era with Dio. It's somewhat slick, but most live shows were in those days! And while it's not as magical as the two studio albums recorded with Dio, it does exude the same mystical atmosphere. Dio left Sabbath shortly before Live Evil was released in January 1983, and the band later went through some ill-advised personnel changes that effectively killed the aura of mystery and mystique that was so integral to Sabbath's appeal. This album is a good reminder of what Black Sabbath really was - and probably never will be again.

3 stars GOOD, BUT NOT ESSENTIAL
i first got this on vinyl in early 1983,and looking back on it,this does not really sound like a live album. It does not have as much raw energy, and sounds too polished. It seems almost sacreligious that Dio would be singing '70's Black Sabbath songs!?

3 stars Not bad for being post-Ozzy.
I am a fan of the Ozzy era Black Sabbath, but I must admit that the Dio era is not bad at all. I actually prefer Dio when he was in Rainbow. I have listened to this album along with "Heaven And Hell" and "Mob Rules" and they are without a doubt the last three great Sabbath albums. I do agree with the "End of an era" review. Sabbath did in fact survive the departure of Ozzy Osbourne but it did not survive the departure of Ronnie James Dio. "Live Evil" marks the real end. Anything post Dio sucks, especially "Born Again".

Dethklok Metalocalypse: Dethalbum II CDs  (2009) Bonus DVD; Deluxe Edition

Live Evil
CD $15.55  5 stars Top 100 Audio Samples
Brendon Small and Gene Hoglan proved their animated death metal band Dethklok had the chops to rock out like a living, breathing group on THE DETHALBUM. On DETHALBUM II, Small and Hoglan make Dethklok sound more like a real band than ever before--for better and worse. Without a doubt, these songs rock hard. The production is tighter and the attack is even heavier than it was on the first album, but surprisingly, that ends up being a slight weakness rather than a strength. What made THE DETHALBUM special was that the songs were funny, but not jokey; tried and true metal fans could appreciate the humor that was mixed into the heaviness, while the wit drew in metal neophytes. But on DETHALBUM II, Small and Hoglan have gotten so good at lovingly embodying metal clichés that the songs aren't as overtly funny or catchy as they were on the first album. Some tracks are almost indistinguishable from music by a genuine death metal band (to casual listeners, anyway). With DETHALBUM II, it feels like Small and Hoglan are courting metal fans first--and with several successful tours under ...

Live Evil
CD $21.19  4.1 stars Top 100
Special Edition CD includes the full album, a CD of instrumental mixes of the album and a CD of six cover songs. Dream Theater's tenth long-player is about as dense and challenging as any album in the band's discography and emphasizes not only the virtuoso members' stupefying musicianship, but also their most aggressive and thoroughly metallic songwriting tendencies. The sixteen-minute opener "A Nightmare to Remember" quickly establishes this agenda via frequently thrash-paced staccato riffing, some of John Petrucci's most blistering guitar solos ever, and the return of drummer Mike Portnoy's syncopated growls, which provide contrast for singer James LaBrie's soaring melodic elegance. "The Count of Tuscany" is a heady prog-metal magnum opus brimming with more ideas, notes, and time changes over 19 minutes than most bands bother with over a ten album career. In ...

This Limited edition of DEGRADATION TRIP features bonus material from the The impact Jerry Cantrell made with his former band Alice In Chains set the blueprint for hard rock in the 1990s like few others. Widely imitated yet never successfully replicated, Cantrell remains a seemingly boundless fountain of crunchy, groove-heavy riffs and eerie vocal harmonies. After a compromise with his label (Roadrunner Records) to release a one-disc version, Cantrell's musical vision can finally be appreciated with the breadth and sequencing he originally intended with DEGRADATION TRIP VOLUMES 1 & 2. The eleven additional cuts are far from scraps recovered from the cutting room floor. "Pro False Idol" and "Dying Inside" are musical studies of an artist struggling with the sticky marriage ...

Atlanta's Mastodon climbed to the top of the metal heap the old-fashioned way. Taking the template for success etched by Metallica, the band captured the imagination with a series of albums that offered potent heaviness and relentless experimentation. After graduating from respected indie Relapse, they released 2006's acclaimed BLOOD MOUNTAIN, an album with a fire motif/fantasy adventure concept that opened numerous doors both commercially and critically. Their latest, CRACK THE SKYE, completes their elemental cycle by focusing on "ether," while also serving as a tale ...
