Opening with "Legal Tender," a paean to counterfeiting, WHAMMY is the B-52s' return to form after the previous year's David Byrne-led detour into more experimental territory (MESOPOTAMIA). Comprising a richer and fuller sound without compromising on the band's economy of sound, WHAMMY is an enjoyable work.

Highlights include the aural personal ad "Song for a Future Generation," the rockin' legume tune "Butterbean," and the sci-fi "Moon 83" (replacing Yoko Ono's "Don't Worry" on this reissue). The album veers into the ridiculous-even by B-52s standards-on "Big Bird," a track about (what else?) a big bird flying over the B-52s' house. This one actually features some cool horn sounds by guests Ralph Carney and David Buck. The closing "Work that Skirt" is a workmanlike instrumental that showcases some great percussion programming. An '80s album through and through, WHAMMY is one worth investigating.

Live Recording

Recorded at Compass Point Studios, Nassau, Bahamas in December 1982.

The B-52s: Fred Schneider, Cindy Wilson, Kate Pierson (vocals); Keith Strickland (guitar, keyboards, drums); Ricky Wilson (guitar, bass).

Additional personnel: Ralph Carney (saxophone); David Buck (trumpet).

4 stars Hot Stuff!!!!!!!!!!
Another great B-52's cd, finally found this on line and wow, the memories are just as fresh as when I first heard the songs over 20 years ago. This group just knows how to make a party happen whether you get the chance to see them live or just puttin on these great tracks from WHAMMY. This group is not through yet! They took on the new electronics wave and this was one of the best examples during the 80's. Legal Tender, Queen of Las Vegas, Song for a future generation, Butterbean, Trism, Whammy Kiss, and Big bird, but its the "Work that Skirt" instrumental where you get to meet the genius in Keith Strickland and all he and Ricky Wilson have added to the brillance of this over the top talented band. This is just another example of some of the best that came out of the 80's music.

1 star NOT THE REAL ALBUM I BOUGHT IN THE 80'S~
My gripe... They replaced "Don't Worry" with a b-side rariety called Moon 83! With all the space on the cd, why didn't they just add it as a bouns track?
