(3 Customer Reviews)
Disturbed's debut found the band crawling through the mire of contemporary metal staples for a cohesive direction. The staccato primal scream that became the band's trademark helped break the single, "Down With The Sickness," in tandem with ... Full Descriptionthe song's Tool-meets-Pantera rhythmic complexities. From the rap metal grooves of "Voices" and "Stupify" to the neo-reggae vibe of "Violence Fetish," THE SICKNESS was a musical forecast of things to come for Disturbed. "Numb" found the band making a foray into more melodic and progressive territory, an approach they would further develop with 2002's BELIEVE.
Recorded at Groovemaster Studios, Chicago, Illinois.
Disturbed: David Draiman (vocals); Dan Donegan (guitar); Fuzz (bass); Mike Wengren (drums, programming).
Additional personnel: Frank De Lamora, Enrique Santiago (programming).
Rolling Stone (9/28/00, pp.53-4) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...Follows the same trajectory of their 1st album [going from] tranquil emotional tenderness into fuzzed-out, white-knuckle anger....with banging beats..." Alternative Press (5/00, pp.84-5) - 4 out of 5 - "...A resuscitating jolt of unwholesome tweaked soundage....This satisfying slab is just anthem after anthem of maximum decibels that -miraculously - never gets samey..." CMJ (1/08/01, p.26) - Included in CMJ's "Best Loud Rock Albums" of 2000. CMJ (3/27/00, p.28) - "...catchy, addictive, and ultimately forward-thinking...leaving a permanent impression..." Melody Maker (7/4/00, p.65) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...Rather entertaining in a turn-off-brain cheap-thrills kinda way....Absolute unreasoning misanthropy of a frankly adolescent nature." Hide Description Sickness Music Review Average Rating: (3.3 out of 5 stars) GET DOWN WITH THE SICKNESS This album is totally killer from start to finish and probably the greatest nu-metal album ever made. 'Stupify' is a modern classic, though my buddy Geoff thinks 'Down With the Sickness' is the best. If your into other awesome bands like Drowning Pool and Staind totally buy this and GET DOWN WITH THE SICKNESS!!! Submitted by Ronnie James (Newcastle, NSW, Australia) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Purchase Sickness CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Joao Gilberto Amoroso/Brasil CD (1977)
Sickness album
$15.89 Joao Gilberto is perhaps forever destined to be lesser known to casual jazz fans than his occasional collaborator Stan Getz (whose GETZ/GILBERTO albums introduced the United States to bossa nova) and his ex-wife Astrud Gilberto (whose shy, delicate voice made her one of the most distinctive and beloved jazz vocalists of the '60s). However, true fans of Brazilian music recognize that Gilberto is second only to Antonio Carlos Jobim as a writer and interpreter of traditional Brazilian music and Brazilian-influenced jazz.
These two albums, collected in full on one CD, are among Gilberto's best solo albums. Alternating between standards like "'S Wonderful" or "Besame Mucho" and Brazilian tunes like Jobim's "Wave" and the original "Triste," AMOROSO is a fine, romantic jazz album. BRASIL, as the title suggests, consists ...
| | John Mclaughlin Live At The Royal Festival Hall CD (1989) (Import)
Sickness CD music

| | Shirley Horn You Won't Forget Me CD (1991)
Sickness music CDs
$9.69 Interestingly, Horn rarely takes a solo, but repeats the songs over and over, slightly changing the phrasing and continuously building on the piano to change the emphasis. Every cut is a masterpiece, but the stand out is the title cut. Drummer Steve Williams sets up a strange, repetitive quarter note pattern which sounds like a ticking clock over which Miles Davis' muted trumpet floats and soars as Horn sings and plays piano. The track is especially poignant, as it was one of Davis' last appearances on record. The effect ...
| | Stan Getz Getz/Gilberto CD (1963)
Sickness songs
$15.05 Opening track "The Girl From Ipanema," a breezy, infectious Jobim composition with vocals by both Joao and Astrud, became one of the biggest (and most recognizable) hits of the era, and the single most popular Brazilian tune in America. The exquisite shuffle "Desafinado," the Joao-Astrud duet "Corcovado," and the eminently grooving "So Danco Samba" have gone on to become standards of both bossa nova and jazz, and the versions here are definitive. Getz's sensitive playing blends seamlessly with the deceptively casual rhythmic sophistication of Jobim, Gilberto, and percussionist Milton Banana. The material, the musicianship, and the gentle, minimal arrangements and production ensure that GETZ/GILBERTO will never date, age, or tire. ...
| | Shirley Horn I Remember Miles CD (1998)
Sickness album
$12.35 I REMEMBER MILES won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Performance.
This stunning album is Shirley Horn's loving tribute to her friend and colleague, the legendary late Miles Davis. Davis was so taken by Horn's first album EMBERS AND ASHES that he forced The Village Vanguard to let her virtually-unknown trio open for him during his 1961 run there. Their friendship and admiration for each other's music lasted through the years, and Shirley Horn's 1991 recording YOU WON'T FORGET ME, was one of the last recordings Miles Davis made.
Horn selected mostly ballads from Davis' Columbia Records catalogue for her tribute because, as she explains in the liner notes, Davis liked her to sing ballads, and ballads are Horn's specialty. She can slow down time in a unique and spellbinding way. Her sultry and smoky vocals are intimate and conversational, relying on odd metered timing and silence, rather than volume, ...
| | Earth, Wind, And Fire Essential Earth, Wind & Fire CDs (2002) Limited Edition; Remastered
Sickness CD music
$15.79 Additional personnel includes: Ken Yerke, Harris Goldman (violin); Rollice Dale (viola); Dennis Karmazyn Harry Schultz (cello); Fred Jackson Jr., Herman Riley, Jerome Richardson (saxophone); Tommy Johnson (tuba); Harvey Mason, Paulinho Da Costa (percussion); Beloyd Taylor (background vocals).
Recorded between 1973 & 1983. Includes liner notes by Leo Sacks, Virginia Prescott, and William C, Rhoden.
"These songs are as close as we came to perfection," says group founder and leader Maurice White in the liner notes to THE ESSENTIAL EARTH, WIND & FIRE. Given the quality of the music in this double-disc package, it's hard to argue. Remarkable for both its commercial success and its inventive hybrid of funk, soul, jazz, and African folk music (White's kalimba is featured as a solo instrument on "Evil," for example), Earth, Wind & Fire are deservedly regarded as one of the finest ensembles of the 1970s.
A thorough retrospective of the band's evolution and multiple stylistic directions (often achieved within one song), ESSENTIAL spans from the early, earthy funk of "Mighty Mighty" to the disco-flavored "Boogie Wonderland" (with the Emotions). In between are all of the group's smash hits--the infectious "Shining Star," the feel-good "Sing a Song," ...
| | Neutral Milk Hotel On Avery Island CD (1996)
Sickness music CDs
$11.59 Though singer/songwriter/bandleader Jeff Magnum would refine his brilliant, quirky psych-folk to perfection on the majestic IN THE AEROPLANE OVER THE SEA, ON AVERY ISLAND--the first offering from Neutral Milk Hotel--is full of rich rewards. Magnum distinguishes himself from his fellow Elephant 6 cohorts Apples In Stereo and Olivia Tremor Control by trading sunshiny acid-dipped Beatles-esque pop for a somewhat edgier sound, centered (perhaps ironically) on acoustic guitar and introspective (albiet surreal and associative) lyrics.
Punky squalls of distorted guitar, brass arrangements, a thick, muted rhythm section, and an onslaught of swirling, otherworldly ...

| | Pat Metheny Road To You: Recorded Live In Europe CD (1993) Remastered
Sickness songs
$13.35 "The Road To You" won the 1994 Grammy Award for "Contemporary Jazz Performance."
One the thing the Pat Metheny Group has always been known for is being able to pull off everything it can do on record in front of a live audience. THE ROAD TO YOU captures Metheny and his men on a European tour playing for ecstatic fans that even sing along to the guitarist's enchanting melodies. For their enthusiasm they are treated to explosive performances of many of Metheny's best works. Longtime members Lyle Mays, Steve Rodby, and Paul Wertico and multi-instrumentalists Armando Marsal and Pedro Aznar round out the group.
All of the group's "hits" are here, including the blistering "Have You Heard," which opens the show with a first-of-many jaw-dropping solos by the leader. The dramatic "First Circle" makes for an exciting live piece as Aznar's vocal work and May's delicate piano styling offer many pleasing moments. The crowd erupts at the first notes of the favorite "Last Train Home, " long a Metheny chestnut. The grandest moments, however, come with the exhilarating "Beat 70" and the stunning closer "Third Wind." Also included are some new compositions like the eclectic "Half Life Of Absolution" and Metheny's tender acoustic piece "Solo From 'More Travels'."
